    Description: A mascon model is proposed in which the mass excess of the mare basalts in the circular maria is supported isostatically by mass deficits at depth. The model predicts the observed positive gravity anomalies surrounded by negative ring anomalies and explains the absence of gravity anomalies over the irregular maria. The model implies that mare basalts were derived by partial melting of a source region at depth due to pressure relief resulting from the excavation of the circular mare basins, and that the crystalline residuum in the source region is of lower density than the original source rock. The trace element enrichment and near cotectic character of Apollo 11 and 12 lavas reported by some investigators may be caused by extensive magma fractionation enroute from an origin in the circular maria to the final, distant emplacement sites.

    Description: The optical complex index of refraction of four candidate Martian surface materials has been determined between 0.185 and 0.4 microns using a modified Kubelka-Munk scattering theory. The cadidate materials were limonite, andesite, montmorillonite, and basalt. The effect of scattering has been removed from the results. Also presented are diffuse reflection and transmission data on these samples.

    Description: Narrow-angle photographs, which have severe drawbacks for stereophotogrammetry, have advantages for simple plane triangulations. Rectified narrow-angle pictures corrected for map projection effects can be combined in the map plane in relatively accurate planimetric triangulations. Provided the strict precepts of least squares are not followed, these triangulations can incorporate considerable overdetermination without increase in the labor of solving the equations. These plane triangulations have been used successfully in the cartography of Mars and are illustrated here by a triangulation of the environs of the prime Martian landing site.

    Description: Mariner 9 ultraviolet spectrometer observations of the 1971 dust clouds obscuring the surface of Mars have been analyzed by matching the observed dust phase function with Mie scattering calculations for size distributions of homogeneous and isotropic material. Preliminary results indicate an effective particle radius of not less than 0.2. The real component of the index of refraction is not less than 1.8 at both 268 and 305 nm; corresponding values for the imagery component are 0.02 and 0.01. These values are consistent with those found by Mead (1970) for the visible and near-visible wavelengths. The refractive index and the absorption coefficient increase rapidly with decreasing wavelength in going from the visible to the ultraviolet, indicating the presence of an ultraviolet absorption band which may shield organisms from ultraviolet irradiation.

    Description: The comminution-agglutination model and the solar-wind implantation-retention model are used to postulate the origins of the particulate components of lunar sample (72161,11), a submillimeter fraction of a surface sample for the dark mantle regolith at LRV-3. Grain-size analysis was performed by wet sieving with liquid argon, and analyses for CO2, CO, CH4, and H2 were carried out by stepwise pyrolysis in a helium atmosphere. The results indicate that the present sample is from a mature regolith, but the agglutinate content is only 30% in the particle-size range between 90 and 177 microns, indicating an apparent departure from steady state. Analyses of the carbon, methane, and hydrogen concentrations in size fractions larger than 149 microns show that the volume-correlated component of these species increases with increased grain size. It is suggested that the observed increase can be explained in terms of mixing of a dominant local population of coarser agglutinates having high carbon and hydrogen concentrations with an imported population of finer agglutinates relatively poor in carbon and hydrogen.

    Description: Determination of the depths of more than 1900 small lunar craters from measures of shadows on the long-focus pictures obtained by Lunar Orbiter IV. The method for converting the measured shadow length into the true length in nature of the shadow hypotenuse is new and is applicable to other planetary bodies, provided that comparable spacecraft ephemerides are available. The measures were made with a simple surveyor's plotting scale on the standard Orbiter IV photographic enlargements. The results indicate that the smaller lunar (D less than 30 km) crater are appreciably deeper than is indicated by earlier work using imagery obtained at terrestrial observatories.

    Description: The measurement of local variations in the far-ultraviolet albedo is explored as a means of detecting changes in the refractive index of rocks and dust on the surface of atmosphereless planets and satellites. Far-ultraviolet spectrophotometric measurements of the lunar surface, which were obtained on the Apollo 17 orbital mission, are presented to demonstrate that significant albedo variations occur in the spectral range 120 to 170 nm. These data also confirm the hypothesis that the albedo variations represent refractive-index differences in the surface materials. A three-band photometer is described which, when put in orbit around a solar system object, is capable of providing refractive-index maps with a sensitivity of one part in the second decimal place and with kilometer resolution. Comparative surface-composition and surface-history analyses based on such maps are discussed.
