    Notes: This paper reports upon the first official application of the estate multiplier method of estimating the wealth distribution to French data. It is based upon a sample of estate duty returns filed during the period September-December 1977. The sampling rate was 5 percent for estates under one million francs, and 100 percent for estates over this level, giving a total of 5031 records. The data available did not permit a breakdown by type of asset. It did, however, permit classification of estates by age, sex, and occupation of decedent. Experiments were conducted using five different sets of mortality multipliers. The set of mortality multipliers judged most appropriate leads to an estimate of aggregate net wealth that is 77 percent of that given in the national balance sheet of the national accounts. Comparison of the distributions of wealth derived in these estimates suggest that the figures are consistent with those found in other countries.

    Notes: A review of plasmids in Clostridium perfringens is presented. The characterization of the caseinase mediating plasmid pHB101 based upon limited DNase treatment, restriction endonuclease treatment, and agarose gel electrophoresis is described. Antibiotic profiles for the wild type strain and the cured strain were determined. The plasmid pHB101 was non self-transferable. The curing procedure resulted in a stable morphological change from rod to coccoid or bacillary-coccoid shape. A screening of C. perfringens strains showed the general presence of a 9.4 Mdal plasmid which may have been overlooked in the past due to chromosomal DNA masking effects.

    Notes: An impedance method was developed for the estimation of coliforms in raw and pasteurized milk, heavy cream, and ice cream mix. Impedance detection times (IDTs) in CM, a medium developed for the impedimetric detection of coliforms, were compared to confirmed Violet Red Bile Agar (CVRBA) plate counts. Correlations of 0.91–0.95 between the two methods were obtained for the four dairy products. The line equations of these relationships were similar for all products. An IDT shorter than 9 hr was indicative of coli- form levels 〉10/mL, while an IDT longer than 12 hr was indicative of levels 〈10/mL. The impedhnetric estimation of coliforms provided the same information as CVRBA counts from dairy products, offering a savings in time and labor.

    Notes: Snack crackers containing 25, 40, 55, and 70% whole-grain triticale flour were prepared. The crackers did not differ in breaking strength or crispness as measured with the Instron Universal Testing Machine. Sensory panelists used the technique of magnitude estimation coupled with word concepts to evaluate the crispness, taste, and overall acceptability of the crackers. Crackers containing 25 and 40% triticale flour tasted better and were more acceptable than were those containing 55 and 70% triticale flour. Panelists did not find differences in crispness. Protein contents of the crackers ranged from 11.78 to 12.97%. It was demonstrated that triticale flour can be used to produce acceptable, increased-protein snack crackers.

    Notes: Using whole genome arrays, we systematically investigated nitrogen regulation in the plant symbiotic bacterium Sinorhizobium meliloti. The use of glutamate instead of ammonium as a nitrogen source induced nitrogen catabolic genes independently of the carbon source, including two glutamine synthetase genes, various aminoacid transporters and the glnKamtB operon. These responses depended on both the ntrC and glnB nitrogen regulators. Glutamate repressible genes included glutamate synthase and a H+-translocating pyrophosphate synthase. The smc01041-ntrBC operon was negatively autoregulated in a glnB-dependent fashion, indicating an involvement of phosphorylated NtrC. In addition to the nitrogen response, glutamate remodelled expression of carbon metabolism by inhibiting expression of the Entner–Doudoroff and pentose phosphate pathways, and by stimulating gluconeogenetic genes independently of ntrC.

    Notes: Soil bacteria collectively known as rhizobia are able to convert atmospheric dinitrogen to ammonia while participating in a symbiotic association with legume plants. This capability has made the bacteria an attractive research subject at many levels of investigation, especially since physiological and metabolic specialization are central to this ecological niche. Dicarboxylate transport plays an important role in the operation of an effective, nitrogen-fixing symbiosis and considerable evidence suggests that dicarboxylates are a major energy and carbon source for the nitrogen-fixing rhizobia. The dicarboxylate transport (Dct) system responsible for importing these compounds generally consists of a dicarboxylate carrier protein, DctA, and a two component kinase regulatory system, DctB/DctD. DctA and DctB/D differ in the substrates that they recognize and a model for substrate recognition by DctA and DctB is discussed. In some rhizobia, DctA expression can be induced during symbiosis in the absence of DctB/DctD by an alternative, uncharacterized, mechanism. The DctA protein belongs to a subgroup of the glutamate transporter family now thought to have an unusual structure that combines aspects of permeases and ion channels. While the structure of C4-dicarboxylate transporters has not been analyzed in detail, mutagenesis of S. meliloti DctA has produced results consistent with the alignment of the rhizobial protein with the more characterized bacterial and eukaryotic glutamate transporters in this family.

    Notes: To allay doubt about how to calculate molar extinction eoeffieients from the specific absorption coefficients of protoehlorophyll(ide), dark-grown leaf segments and saponin protochlorophyll(ide) holochrome subunits frotn barley (Hordeum vulgare L.) and cotyledons of cucumber (Cucumis sativus L.) were extracted with acetone without or following prior, brief illumination. Absorbance data and eoeffieients of chlorophyll a were used to derive extinetion eoeffieients of protoehlorophyll(ide); 626 nm (range: 30 to 35 1 mmol-1 cm-1) without recourse to published coefficients c protochlorophyll(ide). These results combined with evaluation of how the origin; coefficients were obtained, argue for using the molecular weight of protochlorophy rather than protochlorophyllide to calculate molar extinction eoeffieients from th specific absorption coefficients.

    Notes: Enzymatic activites (polyphenoloxidase, catalase and peroxidase) and carotenoid content were estimated in the yellow portion of the mesocarp of six avocado cultivars differing in their browning potential. The results do not support our assumption of the existence of an inverse relationship between browning potential and carotenoid content in the tissue.
