    Notes: The development of red pigments is of great interest to the ceramic industry. Pr(IV) stabilization in a CeO2 matrix yields materials with a red color. In this study, the traditional ceramic method involving solid-state reaction was used to prepare pigments in the system Ce1−xPrxO2−δ (0.005 ≤x≤ 0.1) from mixtures of rare-earth oxides. The chemical stability of these pigments was then determined in some industrial glazes. The glazing tests indicate that the powder samples calcined at 1200° and1300°C are unstable, whereas those calcined at 1400° and 1500°C are stable. These findings are related to the nonformation of a solid solution, to which the pigmenting power is attributed, in calcinations at temperatures below 1400°C.

    Notes: Electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) room-temperature observation of trivalent titanium in sol–gel titania has been reported. This unprecedented detection of stable paramagnetic signals in this titania, which was treated at 200°–800°C, occurred regardless of whether the atmosphere was reducing, inert, or oxidating. The possibility that the paramagnetic signals may originate from an metal impurity other than titanium was completely excluded by analyzing the samples using three different ion-beam-analysis techniques: Rutherford backscattering spectroscopy, particle-induced X-ray emission resonance, and energy-recoil detection analysis. The paramagnetic signals appeared at precisely the temperature range of the sample dehydroxylation, which suggests a mechanism for explaining these Ti3+ EPR spectra.

    Opportunism in Capital Budget Recommendations: The Effects of Past Performance and Its Attributions (2001)

    Notes: This study uses an experiment to examine the separate and combined effects of managers' loss aversion and their causal attributions about their divisions' performance on tendencies to make goal-incongruent capital budget recommendations. We find that managers' recommendations are biased by their loss aversion. In particular, managers of high-performing divisions are more likely than managers of low-performing divisions to propose investments that maximize their division's short-term profits at the expense of the firm's long-term value. We also find that managers' recommendations are biased by their causal attributions. In particular, managers are more likely to propose investments that maximize their division's short-term profits at the expense of the firm's long-term value when they attribute their division's performance to external causes (e.g., task difficulty or luck) rather than to internal causes (e.g., managerial ability or effort). Further, the effects of causal attributions are greater for managers of high-performing divisions than for managers of low-performing divisions. The study's findings are important because loss aversion and causal attributions are often manifested in firms. Thus, they may bias managers' decisions, which in turn may be detrimental to the firms' long-term value.

    Notes: Three of the fundamental aspects under which current development programs operate are self-interest-based plans, compartmentalized regulatory environments, and unbalanced competition. These forces are important components of traditional sustainable development frameworks as they allow for processes based on maximization, partial regulation, and system dominance. It is pointed out in this paper, using qualitative comparative means, that these forces are drivers of sustained development, but not of true sustainability. And the reason is that under true sustainability, there is no maximization; there is no partial regulation; and there are no dominated systems.

    Notes: The recent economic/environmental discourse on development issues has led to a new paradigm of development, called here the "eco-economic development model", but usually known as sustainable development (including both ecological and economic concerns), which has successfully substituted the traditional model of economic development in general acceptance. However, new models usually imply new rules and perhaps a new type of market, yet policy issues within the eco-economic development paradigm are being addressed with theoretical constructs and a state of mind as if we were still in the old paradigm - perhaps because the nature and the internal structure of the new paradigm are not yet well known and understood, as nobody has apparently looked into this. It should be expected that the two paradigms are not equivalent to each other, and therefore, they should be addressed differently. This paper presents a qualitative approach, from a systematic point of view, which can be used to highlight how different the two paradigms are in terms of structure and policy implications. Then, this information is used to provide an answer to three questions: is the economic development market the same as the eco-economic development market; if not, how many invisible hands are there in the eco-economic development market; and what are the environmental, social, and economic policy implications of this situation?. Shows that new paradigms require a new line of thinking to market policy and planning.

    Notes: This paper studies the juridical rationale for mandatory training provision on Temporary Help Agencies as established in the Spanish Temporary Help Agencies Act, 1994 (Law 14/94). No positive relationship is found between the improvement in Temporary Help Agencies' added value levels and their investments in temps' training. In analyzing this specific provision of Spanish Labor Law we adopt a positive focus to explain its impact on the functioning of the temporary help industry. The application of institutional theory leads us to conclude that efficient use of this legal prescription is limited. The issue is relevant to understanding the economic outcomes of regulation from a law and economics perspective.
