Notes: The temperature and thickness dependence of permittivity of (Ba,Sr)TiO3 has been investigated. The films were deposited by liquid-source metalorganic chemical vapor deposition onto Pt/SiO2/Si, with thicknesses ranging from 15 to 580 nm. The dielectric response was measured from 100 to 520 K. As film thickness decreased, the maximum dielectric constant decreased, the temperature at which the maximum dielectric constant occurred decreased, and the peak in the dielectric constant became more diffuse. A model incorporating a thickness independent interior and a nonferroelectric surface cannot account for these thickness dependencies. To appropriately model these observations a physical model containing thickness and temperature dependent interior and surface components is necessary. © 2002 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: Comparisons were made between 12 Barbados Blackbelly and 12 St. Croix ram lambs (hair types) and 10 Florida Native and 12 crossbred ram lambs (wooled types) for growth, carcass characteristics and sensory panel evaluation scores. In addition, 14 predominantly hair and 14 predominantly wooled crossbred ram lambs were compared for carcass characteristics and sensory panel evaluation scores. The hair sheep had a lower rate of gain than the wooled types. The wooled breeds and predominantly wooled crossbreds were heavier and graded higher than the hair breeds and predominantly hair types. The sensory panel found the meat acceptable (tenderness, juiciness, flavor and acceptability) from all breeds.

Notes: Teff (Eragrostis tef (Zucc.) Trotter) cv.DZ-01- 354 was sprayed at one-, three-, four-, five- and six-leaf stages with 2.4-D (amine salt) and MCPA (potassium salt) each at 0.75 and 1.5 kg a.e. ha−1. Teff was also grown in different temperature regimes to see the relation between apical and vegetative development. Photomicrographs were made to determine the stage of development of the growing point and dry matter measurements were made to assess the effects of the herbieide. Teff sprayed at the one leaf stage was killed by both herbieides. At the three- and four-leaf stages 2, 4-D at both rates and MCPA at 1.5 kg a.i. ha−1 caused severe leaf deformities and reduced dry weights. Less severe effects were noted at the five-leaf stage indicating that teff was then more tolerant to these herbicides. This coincided with a fully elongated shoot apex. However, when sprayed at the six-leaf stage there was evidence of herbicide-induced panicle deformities. Teff was more susceptible to 2, 4-D than to MCPA and both affected the roots more than the shoots. A close correlation was found between leaf number and the development of shoot apex under all the different temperature and day length conditions.

Notes: The nutrient composition of Spring and Fall lambs were investigated. Seven retail cuts from carcasses of lambs raised under commercial conditions, and representing two age groups (4–4½ mo and 8–9 mo) were analyzed in both raw and cooked form. Separable lean meat was analyzed for proximate composition, 8 vitamins, 8 inorganic nutrients, cholesterol and 12 fatty acids. Except for moisture, total lipid, riboflavin, niacin, Zn and Fe, there were no practical differences in nutrients between cuts or age groups. Thiamin had the lowest cooking retention with a range of 29.0-63.5%.

Notes: Abstract Direct evidence has been obtained for the presence of adenosine-3′:5′-cyclic monophosphate (cAMP) in tobacco (Nicotiana tabacum L.) callus tissue cultures, bean (Phaseolus vulgaris L.) seedlings and immature kernels of sweet corn (Zea mays L.) through the use of a highly specific and sensitive gas chromatography-mass spectrometric assay. Levels of endogenous cAMP ranged from 70 to 126 pmol/g fresh weight. Corresponding levels of cAMP determined for the same samples using radioimmunoassay were consistently three to four times higher. Contrary to previous reports for citrus plants, measurable levels of cAMP could not be detected in young lemon leaves within the limits of detection of the mass-spectrometric assay method. In the case of tobacco callus tissue, the coumarin glucoside, scopolin, which was present in large amounts and showed similar chromatographic behaviour to cAMP, interferred strongly with the mass-spectrometric measurements of cAMP in inadequately purified extracts. The use of high-performance liquid chromatography, in addition to standard chromatographic purification methods, produced highly purified plant extracts for quantitation of cAMP and also provided a method for the separation of cAMP from its 2′:3′-isomer.

Notes: Abstract We report here the first results obtained by cooling a submillimeter quasioptical mixer, utilizing a Schottky diode in a corner reflector mixer structure. Measurements have been carried out at a wavelength of 434 microns. The diode inverse slope parameter Vo at low current decreases by a factor of 3 upon cooling to 50 K while the minimum system noise temperature of 5600 K (SSB), including the IF contribution, demonstrates a reduction of approximately 40% from the ambient temperature value. We also report improved system noise temperatures at 184 μm and 119 μm wavelengths of 38000 K and 64000 K (SSB), respectively.
