Notes: [Auszug] Adult male cats received a lethal injection of pentobarbitone; their brains were removed and immersed in ice-cold saline for 10 min. Blocks containing the corpus striatum were frozen and sectioned in the transverse plane at 20 µ?? using a cryostat. Adjacent sections were incubated with either ...

Notes: [Auszug] Pituitary samples were dissected and extracted as previously described10, and NTLI was measured with two radioim-munoassays using rabbit antisera directed against the amino-and carboxy-terminals of synthetic neurotensin10. The detection limit of each assay was 10 fmol per assay tube. NTLI was ...

Notes: [Auszug] The distribution of specific 3H-substance P-binding sites throughout the rat brain was initially determined. Adult male Sprague-Dawley rats were killed, their brains removed, frozen on dry-ice and 20-??? sections cut using a cryostat in either the horizontal or the coronal plane. They were apposed ...

Notes: Summary It is not possible in practice to carry out measurements in quantitative or qualitative analysis at a precision level better than 0.5% if conventional equipment such as recorders and electronic integrators are used to obtain the data. Only numerical techniques of on-line or off-line measurements associated with data handling by computer can be used. From their very nature numerical techniques are discontinuous and the number of experimental points is limited. According to information theory this discontinuous character does not imply a loss of accuracy provided that some simple relationship derived from the theory of sampled systems is fulfilled. These conditions deal with the choice of the sampling frequency, the frequency band-width of the amplifier and measurement system, and the upper limit of the signal frequency. We have made a theoretical and an experimental study of these phenomena and the results allow us to derive some simple rules which make the choice of parameters of the system of data acquisition easy. We have also determined the main sources of error in data acquisition systems and calculated their contribution.

Notes: Summary Using a computer simulation of the chromatographic signal acquisition process, errors made in the calculation of the various moments are determined. The effects of the width of the time window used for the integration, of the density of data points and of the shift between the peak maximu mand the nearest data point on the these errors are studied. The more unsymmetrical a peak, the larger the time window and the higher the density of data which are necessary to reach a given level of accuracy. The density of data points decreases while the width of the time window increase with increasing moment order. These results allow the ready determination of the optimum values of the parameters of the data acquisition system.

Notes: Summary Minicomputers are often underemployed and could be replaced by less powerful systems. The need for a product with characteristics intermediate between the minicomputer and hardwired systems resulted recently in the commercialization of inexpensive microprocessor units. A general purpose microcomputer has been designed around such a microprocessor unit, and the capabilities and limitations of this new device, when used to solve problems encountered in an analytical laboratory, are reported. Examples include: (1) on-line filtering of an analog signal at the output of a liquid chromatograph, (2) use as a buffer memory to rapidly store data from a GC/MS and then output it slowly on an inexpensive recorder, and (3) the analysis of noise from a new liquid chromatography detector using a conventional recorder as a storage oscilloscope. Applications for these inexpensive units are limitless, and we foresee their use in almost every field of instrumentation in future years.

Notes: Summary Usually computers are coupled to chromatographs or similar apparatus for data acquisition and handling. This by no means limits the potential uses of computers in experimental analytical chemistry. The advantage of introducing the computer in closed loop controls results from the shorter equilibrium time, the lack of long-term drift, the reduction in fluctuations. Control programs can be adjusted to new equipments or equipments of different design, by changing some lines or numbers. The performances of programs operating after different principles are compared. A completely automatic chromatograph incorporating a closed-loop computer control of temperature and an analog pressure control system in which the computer can adjust the setting point is described.
