Notes: The present research focused on the functional role of the phytoplankton of an economically important endorheic tropical lake from the perspective of algal growth bioassays. The algal growth potential of the lake water was compared for littoral and pelagic sites during the wet and dry seasons. Algal growth potentials at open waters reached minimum and maximum values following the seasonal alternation of dilution (by rain) and concentration (by evaporation) respectively. Conversely, at southern littoral stations high algal growth responses related to the availability of nutrients from point contamination sites. There was no such effect at nearby offshore sites or elsewhere in the lake which suggests filtration and competitive interactions for these nutrients between phytoplankton and littoral macrophytes. Nitrogen and phosphorus both acted consistently as limiting nutrients at open waters by colimitation. Nitrogen to phosphorus ratios seemed to approach equilibrium where limitation easily shifted to one element or the other temporally and spatially.

Notes: [Auszug] The herbivorous insects of tropical forests constitute some of the most diverse communities of living organisms. For this reason it has been difficult to discover the degree to which these communities are structured, and by what processes. Interspecific competition for resources does occur, but ...

Notes: [Auszug] The human genome is by far the largest genome to be sequenced, and its size and complexity present many challenges for sequence assembly. The International Human Genome Sequencing Consortium constructed a map of the whole genome to enable the selection of clones for sequencing and for the accurate ...

Notes: Abstract This paper is the entire report of the IAU Working Group on Cartographic Coordinates and Rotational Elements of the Planets and Satellites, including three annexes. Tables give the recemmended values for the directions of the north poles of rotation and the prime meridians of the planets and satellites. Reference surfaces for mapping these bodies are described. The annexes discuss the guiding principles, given in the body of the report, present explanatory notes, and provide a bibliography of the rotational elements and reference surfaces of the planets and satellites, definitions, and algebraic expressions of relevant parameters.

Notes: Abstract A new and inexpensive pop-up ocean-bottom hydrophone recorder has been developed for use in seismic refraction experiments. It is capable of operating in water depths of up to 4000 m and in very rugged topography, and uses an acoustic command system built by the U.K. Institute of Oceanographic Sciences for recovery. The instrument is mounted in an inexpensive cylindrical pressure case based on commercially available extruded aluminium alloy tubing, and uses glass spheres and syntactic foam for buoyancy. Hydrophone and clock signals are frequency modulated and recorded on tape cassettes, with a recording duration of three hours allowing up to 18 programmed shot windows. The prototype has made seven free descents on the Mid-Atlantic ridge and in the Gulf of Oman, and successfully recorded shots under operational conditions for the first time in September 1979. The total component cost of the prototype was £2740 (1979 prices).

Notes: [Auszug] Although spectra of the Galilean satellites Europa, Ganymede and Callisto clearly indicate water ice absorption features representing free water in the form of surface frost1, no water ice features have been identified in reflection spectra of lo. Notes: [Auszug] Io was observed by the long-wavelength spectrograph of the IUE on 21 April 1979. The best Io spectrum is shown in Fig. 1, together with the solar spectrum of Broadfoot4. The sub-Earth longitude on Io increased from 80 to 90 during the period in which our best spectrum was obtained. The spectral ...

Notes: Abstract We describe a learning-based method for low-level vision problems—estimating scenes from images. We generate a synthetic world of scenes and their corresponding rendered images, modeling their relationships with a Markov network. Bayesian belief propagation allows us to efficiently find a local maximum of the posterior probability for the scene, given an image. We call this approach VISTA—Vision by Image/Scene TrAining. We apply VISTA to the “super-resolution” problem (estimating high frequency details from a low-resolution image), showing good results. To illustrate the potential breadth of the technique, we also apply it in two other problem domains, both simplified. We learn to distinguish shading from reflectance variations in a single image under particular lighting conditions. For the motion estimation problem in a “blobs world”, we show figure/ground discrimination, solution of the aperture problem, and filling-in arising from application of the same probabilistic machinery.

Notes: The problem of developed turbulent heat or mass transfer in a duct is considered for the limit of large σ (Prandtl or Schmidt number). The limiting results depend on the behavior of the eddy diffusivity near the solid surface. Since there is a question about whether this variation begins with ∊ ∝ y+3 + … or ∊ ∝ y+4 + … for y+ near zero, both possibilities are considered. In each case the first three terms of the asymptotic expansion for σ → ∞ are obtained. The first term of the asymptotic expansion agrees with limiting results derived earlier, while the correction terms indicate the errors associated with earlier simplifying assumptions.By proper scalling, it is demonstrated that in the limit of σ → ∞ the results are independent of geometry and boundary conditions for situations involving parallel plates, circular tubes and concentric annuli with either constant surface heat flux or temperature. The correction terms to the σ → ∞ asymptote can be significant, although the effect of Reynolds number on the correction terms is very small.A comparison between a typical numerical integration and the asymptotic formula shows excellent agreement. The asymptotic formulae are used to correlate large Schmidt number mass transfer data.
