Notes: Abstract We start from the classical Hamiltonian constraint of general relativity to obtain the Einstein–Hamiltonian–Jacobi equation. We obtain a time parameter prescription demanding that geometry itself determines the time, not the matter field, such that the time so defined being equivalent to the time that enters into the Schrödinger equation. Using a semiclassical approximation we obtain an equation for quantum gravity in Schrödinger form containing time. We restrict ourselves to a minisuperspace description. Unlike matter field equation our equation is equivalent to the Wheeler–DeWitt equation in the sense that our solutions reproduce also the wavefunction of the Wheeler–DeWitt equation provided one evaluates the normalization constant according to the wormhole dominance proposal recently proposed by us.

Notes: Abstract The mechanical properties of semicrystalline polymers are very much dependent on the molecular orientation. The orientation function to deal with the elastic moduli data of Hadley et al. (1969) are treated under new aspects. To determine the nature of orientation function from empirical data a relation of the form Sinθ=f (n) Sinθ′ is assumed to describe the change in the orientation angle of a unit from θ′ to θ for the draw ration. Birefringence experimental data are used to find the orientation functionf (n) which is then used to calculate elastic properties. The agreement of the experimental values ofE 0 andE 90 over the entire draw ratio range is found to be satisfactory for Nylon, low density polyethylene and polyethylene terephthalate. This furnishes strong empirical evidence for the validity of the orientational model for the above substances.

Notes: Abstract Magnetic properties of a system of noninteracting relativistic quark gas in presence of an external intense magnetic field has been calculated assuming that quarks obey parastatistics of order three. It is found, although the magnetization is greater for quark gas than that for normal hadronic system, it is unlikely that the spontaneous magnetization will take place in a quark star.

Notes: Abstract The freezing of aqueous solutions of carbohydrates has been studied using differential scanning calorimetry. The reduction in the molar heat of fusion of water is attributed to the nonfreezing of a proportion of the water in the presence of the dissolved carbohydrate. The effects of concentration and molecular weight have been investigated.

Notes: Abstract Given a compact connected oriented three manifold, equipped with a codimension one foliation, such that the Bott connection on the normal bundle is flat, a 2-form on the space parametrizing flat partial connections on it has been constructed. This form is closed. In the special case where the foliated three manifold is a surface bundle over the circle, this 2-form is identified with a certain 2-form on the parameter space for a class of paths in the representation space for the surface group. The 2-form, in question, on the parameter space for paths is constructed from the natural symplectic form on the representation space for a surface group.

Notes: Abstract In this paper, we study the gravitational field of domain wall in fivedimensional space-time. Exact solutions of Einstein's equations for a scalarfield with a potential V(Ø) are presented, describing thegravitational field of plane symmetric domain walls. The solution showsthat the energy density as well as pressure in the perpendicular directionon both sides of the walls to be reflection symmetric with respect to thewalls.PACS numbers: 98.80 cq, 0450

Notes: Abstract The intensity and energy spectra of multiply charged cosmic ray nuclei, in the energy interval 250–1500 MeV/n, were studied at three different levels of solar activity, viz. in 1963, 1964 and 1967. The same detectors, nuclear emulsion stacks flown from Fort Churchill, Canada, were used to determine simultaneouslty the energy spectra of helium, C, N, O as well as H (Z=10–28) nuclei. An analysis of the measured spectra indicates that these can be interpreted in terms of: (a) the source spectrum as a Fermi spectrum with a spectral index of 2.65; (b) the interstellar propagation as in a Gaussian distribution of path lengths with a mean path length of 4 g cm−2 and (c) the interplanetary propagation as given by the numerical solution of the Fokker-Planck equation incorporating diffusion, convection and adiabatic deceleration. On comparing the measured ratios of He to H-nuclei (mean Z≃14) with the theoretically calculated values for the three levels of solar activity, it is found that within experimental uncertainties, the solar modulation is essentially the same for nuclei of same mass to charge ratio and is not dependent on the charge of the nuclei.

Notes: Abstract High fluences (i.e. the integrated fluxes) of C, N, O group of nuclei and some of the heavier ones, in the energy interval 10–25 MeV/amu, have been identified in a Lexan polycarbonate detector assembly exposed on the exterior of the Skylab for 73 days. The existence of large flux of low energy nuclei in the Skylab orbit is surprising since the minimum geomagnetic cut-off energy for fully stripped nuclei (A/Z=2) is ≃50 MeV/amu at the orbit of the satellite, and the period of exposure was a ‘quiet’ one, free from significant solar particle events. We have considered two sources for these particles: (i) partly ionized interplanetary ions accelerated within the magnetosphere and (ii) heavy nuclei trapped in the Earth's radiation belt. The flux and composition of the nuclei observed by us seem to be significantly different from those in the trapped radiation as known at present; hence it seems likely that the major part of the observed flux may be interpreted, in terms of partly ionized interplanetary ions that are further accelerated in the magnetosphere.
