Notizen: SUMMARY. The composition of bulk (wet and dry) precipitation in 1975 and 1976 was similar to that found 22 years previously. In 1975, mean values for nine precipitation samplers at one site (Wraymires) ranged from pH 4.3 to 4.5; similar values were obtained in 1976. Samplers covered with fine-mesh plastic gauze caught substantially more Ca2+ and K+ than open samplers, but pH and SO2-4+ NO3- concentrations were similar in open and covered samplers. In precipitation, c. 50% of H+ was balanced by NO3- and c. 50% by SOi; 80% of the SO2-4 was balanced by Ca2+ and Mg2+.Conccntrations of major cations (H+, Na+, K+,Ca2+, Mg2+) and anions (CI-, NO3- SO2-4 and alkalinity [Alk—largely HCO3-]) in upland water- bodies were similar to those found in precipitation, but pH levels were generally higher and above 6.0 m some tarns. At lower altitudes, on base-rich roeks and soils, Ca2+ and Alk become dominant. Results of a survey of lakes and tarns in 1974–78 are compared with a survey in 1953–56 and published data (chiefly for pH and Alk) for 1947–50, 1932 and 1928. Comparisons are also made with other measurements of Alk in three productive lakes (Blelham Tarn, Esthwaite Water and Windermere) for 1936–39 and 1945–80. Winter levels of NO3-N, PO4-P and Si are given for these lakes; although the first two have increased during the late 1960s and the 1970s there has been no significant change in the last. NO3- and probably some SO2-4. In productive lakes a substantial (c. 50%) rise in mean Alk occurred during the late 1960s and the 1970s, possibly related to increased winter levels of NO3-N and PO4-P derived from sewage and fertilizers. In this period the maximum pH levels reached in summer were notably high, sometimes exceeding pH 10. The rise in Alk, conductivity and pH of surface waters is influenced by climatic factors (a decade of drier years), sewage input and biological productivity within the lakes.Considerable seasonal fluctuations in the concentrations of major ions, a characteristic feature of surface waters in the English Lake District, are illustrated and some implications for cation-anion balance briefly discussed. Mid-winter concentrations are usually high forNa+, K+, Cl-. NO3-and low for Ca2+, Mg2+, Alk. SO2-4.Alkalinity. pH and conductivity of Lake District tarns and lakes show no signs of acidification during the period 1928–80. On the contrary, productive lakes have become more alkaline and some unproductive low-alkalinity (〈 100 μ-equiv. 1-1) lakes also show signs of alkalization, with increased mean concentrations of Na+. Ca2+ and Mg2+, balanced by Alk.

Notizen: Abstract – The piscivorous behaviour in a brown trout (Salmo trutta L.) population was studied in four discrete periods over seven decades (1917–94) in the hydroelectric reservoir Tunhovdfjord in Norway established in 1919. Piscivorous brown trout were extremely scarce prior to the introduction of two fish species Arctic charr (Salvelinus alpinus L.) and European minnow (Phoxinus phoxinus L.) in the 1920s. Brown trout started eating minnow at 17 cm and Arctic charr at 22 cm of length. In the 1950s, the brown trout predated extensively (60% of analysed trout) on Arctic charr and minnow. During the next four decades, the incidence of piscivorous brown trout declined to 15%, whereas the frequency of brown trout eating Arctic charr remained constant at 10%. The growth pattern, expressed as back-calculated length, demonstrated similarity in three periods (1920s, 1960s and 1990s) and improved growth in the 1950s. The improvement was addressed the impoundment of a reservoir upstream. We did not find any marked change in growth rate due to piscivority, but coefficient of variance of back-calculated lengths indicated significant variation in individual growth in age group ≥6 years from 1950 onwards. We accredit this variation to the rise of piscivorous brown trout.

Notizen: The movement of 34 large (39–73 cm standard length) brown trout Salmo trutta was monitored using radio telemetry for up to 74 days in Brumunda, a small Norwegian river (mean annual discharge 3·3 m3 s−1) flowing into the large Lake Mjøsa. The maximum range of movement in the river was 20 km. No clear relationships existed between individual movement and water discharge, temperature and barometric pressure. Brown trout migrated at all levels of water discharge. At low discharge (〈2 m3 s−1) movements were nocturnal. A weir 5·3 km from the outlet restricted ascending brown trout at low (c. 6° C), but not at high (c. 8° C) water temperatures. Spawning occurred in September to October and tagged individuals spent 2–51 days at the spawning sites. Mean migration speed from tagging to when the fish reached the spawning area, and from when they left the spawning areas and reached the lake was 1·0 and 2·3 km day−1, respectively. All tagged brown trout that survived spawning returned to the lake after spawning.

Notizen: Abstract – The smolt run of anadromous brown trout (Sulmo trutta) in a Norwegian river was studied for three consecutive years. The main run occurred in a period of 7–10 days in the middle or second half of May. Support was found for the hypothesis that high water discharge and temperature triggered the run. Few smolts descended when the discharge was low (〈50 m3· s−1) and the water temperature was below 4°C. The maximum number were caught when the discharge was moderate (70–150 m3· s−1) and the water temperature high (68°C). The relative importance of these factors varied from year to year. The first-year discharge explained 38% of the variation in the number of smolts migrating. Discharge and temperature together explained 61% in 1992 and 28% in the second and third year, respectively.

Notizen: [Auszug] In Great Britain, at least, there are few men of science with a deep knowledge of Latin. Commonly, assistance has to be obtained in making Latin diagnoses or, what is worse, someone other than the author translates them. The translator may well neither be an algologist nor even a botanist. Even ...

Notizen: Summary Desmids in Windermere, a lake in the English Lake District, are often parasitized by chytridiaceous or biflagellate phycomyceteus fungi. Descriptions are given of the fungal parasites concerned, several of which cannot yet be named. The relationship between the severity of parasitism, decrease in the number of live cells of desmids and increases in those of dead cells are described and illustrated. There is evidence, from over twenty years of observations on desmids and their parasites, that the examples given here are not peculiar to the years concerned and that parasitism occurs similarly in other lakes. Parasitism does not alter the overall seasonal pattern of periodicity of the desmids; it can have a marked effect on interspecific competition. There is no evidence that desmids must be already adversely affected by other environmental conditions before severe parasitism can arise. Indeed the evidence available suggest that parasites commonly infect healthy and rapidly growing cells.
