Notes: Abstract This paper reviews the various physico-chemical processes responsible for actual linewidths encountered in high-resolution coherent anti-Stokes Raman spectroscopy (CARS). Most of the experimental data are based on linewidth measurements using a pulseamplified CARS spectrometer with an emission bandwidth (FWHM) of 2×10−3 cm−1. Detailed rotational and vibrational relaxation constants have been obtained from the analysis of theQ-branch profiles of C2H2, N2, CH4, and SiH4.

Notes: Abstract Observation of light scattering on the laser-produced temperature inhomogeneities, the centres of which are connected with some absorbing molecules, is reported. The experimentally observed scattering intensity agrees well theory.

Notes: Abstract There have been almost a hundred years of continuous scientific activities at The Hydrobiological Station ‘Glubokoe Ozero’. The present volume of ‘Hydrobiologia’ contains summary papers reviewing previous and recent results of the studies on the hydrochemistry, zooplankton, zoobenthos, littoral fauna, food composition of fish, and historical biocenology (based on animal remains in bottom sediments), as well as on particular animal groups, such as Cladocera with special consideration of Daphnia, rotifers, fish, and parasitofauna. The present introductory paper provides data on the general characteristics of Lake Glubokoe, the history of its investigations and the station's modern programme which is aimed at biocenology with special consideration for morphological and physiological adaptations. Research both on general and on peculiar features of Lake Glubokoe is envisaged.

Notes: Abstract The zoocenosis of Lake Glubokoe has been characterized on the basis of long-term and paleobiocenotic studies. The present zoocenosis has existed for about 400 years. It was preceded by a tanatozoocenosis with a domination by Testacida. At present, the phytoplankton is dominated by Euchlorophyceae, Cyanophyta, Pyrrophyta, Bacillariophyta, and Chrysophyta, and the zooplankton by Daphnia spp. and Bosmina spp. In the zoobenthos, the community of Sergentia has now been replaced by that of Chironomus. The most numerous among the fish are Rutilus rutilus and Perca fluviatilis. The flora and fauna exist under conditions of a low total content of dissolved substances. There is a considerable number of acidophilic Desmidiales and Alonella nana. Periodic shifts of water pH towards acidity apparently affect the floral and faunal composition of the lake. The list of 440 animals and 232 plants is composed mainly of recent data; many groups of animals and plants have not yet been studied. The articles of this volume describe some dynamic characteristics of the main communities and inter-annual fluctuations.

Notes: Abstract The remains of all the groups of invertebrates in a 131 cm long sediment core taken from the main basin of the lake and corresponding to about 600 years have been examined and counted. The middle horizons (90–40 cm) are dominated by Testacida. Deeper layers and those closer to the surface are dominated by Cladocera. Among the Cladocera, planktonic forms dominate at all depths of the sediment. The present zoocenosis has existed for about 400 years. A 50 cm core from the lake bay has also been studied. Cladocera dominate at 50–40 cm and near the surface. Porifera spicules are abundant at 20–10 cm while Protozoa are numerous at 30 cm. Among the Cladocera, planktonic forms are less important than in the main lake basin.

Notes: Abstract Investigations on the background levels of anthropogenic organic substances and their analogs in the environment are relatively new. Such a case study is being carried out at Lake Glubokoe (its water mass, bottom sediments, interstitial waters) and other water bodies. The study includes pesticides, carcinogenic substances, organic halides, petroleum products, phenols and surfactants.
