Notes: Abstract The reaction of Pt2Ru4(CO)18, 1 with 1,8-bis(phenylethynyl)naphthalene, 2 has yielded two metal carbonyl cluster complexes: Ru2(CO)6[μ-η 2-C10H6C4Ph2], 3 (60% yield) and Ru2Pt(CO)6[μ-η 2-C10H6C4Ph2]2, 4 (8% yield). Both compounds were characterized by a single crystal X-ray diffraction analysis. Both products were formed as a result of fragmentation of the Pt2Ru4 cluster of 1. Compound 3 contains two ruthenium atoms. They are bridged by a tricyclic C10H6C4Ph2 ligand formed by the coupling of the two α-carbon atoms of the alkyne groups. The β-carbon atoms of the alkynes are σ-bonded to one of the ruthenium atoms to form a metallacycle and this entire group is π-bonded to the second ruthenium atom. Compound 4 contains two ruthenium atoms with a platinum atom between them. This molecule contains two tricyclic C10H6C4Ph2 ligands similar to that in 3, and two metallacycles formed by coordination of the β-carbon atoms of both ligands to the platinum atom. One ligand is π-bonded to each of the ruthenium atoms.

Notes: Abstract We present a simple analytical method to study birefringence and polarization mode dispersion (PMD) of graded-core stress-applied polarization-maintaining fibers. It is based on the equivalent step-index-fiber method. It is shown that the agreement between present results and the results obtained using the finite-element method is very good. Polarization characteristics of stress-applied polarization-maintaining fibers having a dip in the refractive index at the center of the core are also investigated.

Notes: Summary Due to their high information content and their particular mode of variation, large rRNA molecules potentially represent powerful indicators of phylogenetic relationships. Even partial sequences may suffice to generate reliable estimations, provided they correspond to well-chosen portions of the molecule. We have systematically analyzed a specific portion of the large rRNA (the region extending over nearly 400 nucleotides from the 5′ end) as a general index of eucaryotic phylogeny. By means of fast and direct rRNA sequencing, we have determined the sequence of this region for 20 additional eucaryotes, including several representatives of each vertebrate class, an invertebrate metazoan (mussel), a fungus (Schizosaccharomyces pombe), and three higher plants. Comparative treatment of these new data and previously reported rRNA sequences shows that this region can serve as an indicator of eucaryotic phylogeny for evaluating both long-range and short-range relationships. Its conservative domains appear to possess a rather uniform rate of nucleotide changes in all the eucaryotic lineages analyzed and the phylogenetic tree we derived agrees with classical views.

Notes: Abstract In these studies the optimum temperature indices for spikelet differentiation were found. The critical period determining the number of spikelets on a spike lies between the single ridge stage and the stage of glume differentiation. During this period a daily temperature below 7.5°C is favourable for differentiation of further spikelets. The processes of differentiation of wheat spikes need certain accumulated temperatures for a mean daily temperature above 0°C. The relationship between the rate of spikelet differentiation and temperature during the differentiation period, and the of these periods are discussed. According to the effect of climate in early spring on the number of differentiated spikelets of winter wheat, three climatic types in early spring are suggested.

Notes: Abstract The determination of percent stenosis of coronary arteries is an important task in medicine. In this paper we discuss three different algorithms which can be used in conjunction with videodensitometry to measure this quantity. These algorithms may be used in subtracting the background under a vessel segment thus eliminating the need for a preinjection mask. Mathematical details of the algorithms and experimental results are presented.

Notes: Summary Eight new compounds of theα- andβ- MaHb[SiW9Fe3 (H2O)3O37]·xH2O type, where M = K, Me4N, Et4N or Na n-Bu4N, and a + b = 7, have been synthesized from trivacant heteropoly tungstateα- andβ- [SiW9O34]10− precursors, and characterized by i.r., u.v., x-ray photoelectron (x.p.e.) and Mössbauer spectroscopy, and polarography, and by their magnetic moments and thermal behavior. The i.r. and u.v. spectra confirm that theα-andβ- [SiW9Fe3(H2O)3O37]7− isomers possess the Keggin structure. The main i.r. bands shift regularly with the changes of cation-size. The charge transfer energies of the easily reducedβ-isomers are lower than those of theα-isomers. The x.p.e. results indicateπ-bond back-donation between iron and oxygen. The Mössbauer parameters obtained for theβ-isomer show that the three iron atoms in the polyanion are of two types; the lower magnetic moments suggest the presence of anti-parallel coupling via iron d-orbitals overlap with the p-orbitals of the bridging oxygens. All compounds decompose atca. 600°C.

Notes: Abstract The over-current protector is one of the main applications of the positive temperature coefficient (PTC) thermistor. Low room-temperature resistance and a PTC effect are required for the use of the over-current protection. As a result, lowering the room-temperature resistivity of PTC materials becomes very important. From a Japanese patent, the method of adding metal to BaTiO3-based PTC ceramics to form composites has shown good results. But in recent publications, few papers were related to this area. Furthermore, in the limited literature, the resistance–temperature curve of the material expressed a negative temperature coefficient (NTC) effect when metal was present. In the present work, chromium (Cr), was added to (Ba,Pb)TiO3 ceramics to form PTC composite with higher Curie temperature (T C = 180°C). Under a given composition and method, the prepared composite had low room-temperature resistivity (p = 1.33Ωcm) and PTC effect (Pmax/Pmax = 10). From the experimental results obtained, a structural model of the composite is proposed. The co-function of metal and ceramics, and sintering atmosphere factor on the PTC effect are discussed in this model. By employing this model, the resistance–temperature properties of the composites can be explained satisfactorily.

Notes: Abstract The Ca2+ antagonist binding sites associated with the voltage dependent calcium channel in rabbit myocardium were found to distribute with the sarcolemmal Na− + K+ ATPase and adenylate cyclase activities during subcellular fractionation on sucrose-density gradients. The equilibrium dissociation constants (KD) for the binding of [3H]nitrendipine and [3H]verapamil were 0.31 ± 0.04 nM and 4.1 ± 0.5 nM respectively, and displayed an average density of 0.55 ± 0.05 pmol/mg and 0.4 ± 0.03 pmol/mg protein respectively for the most enriched membrane fraction. The Ca2+2 antagonist binding sites were solubilized from the membranes with the detergent 3-[(3-cholamidopropyl)dimethylammonio]propanesulfonate, and specific binding sites for [3H]PN200-110, [3H]verapamil and [3H]diltiazem were isolated on a wheat-germ lectin column. The binding sites for [3H]PN200-110 were enriched about 2500 fold as compared with the original homogenate and displayed a density of 28.5 ± 8 pmole/mg protein in the isolated fraction. Sodium dodecyl sulfate gel electrophoresis of the isolated drug binding proteins indicated enrichment of proteins of Mr 170000, 140000, 130000, 100 000 and 53000. The isolated receptor contained an intrinsic kinase activity that phosphorylated glycoproteins of Mr 170 000 and 53000. Exogenously added cAMP-kinase stimulated phosphorylation of the 170000, 100000, 53 000 and 28000 Mr glycoproteins in the receptor fraction. The results of this study indicate that the binding sites for [3H]nitrendipine, [3H]PN200-110, [3H]verapamil and [3H]diltiazem residue on glycoprotein(s) which are of sarcolemmal origin, and co-purify together on wheat germ lectin columns. The polypeptide composition of the Ca2+ antagonist binding sites from cardiac muscle appears to be very similar to that of the dihydropyridine receptor in skeletal muscle.
