Notes: In the E-157 experiment now being conducted at the Stanford Linear Accelerator Center, a 30 GeV electron beam of 2×1010 electrons in a 0.65-mm-long bunch is propagated through a 1.4-m-long lithium plasma of density up to 2×1014 e−/cm3. The initial beam density is greater than the plasma density, and the head of the bunch expels the plasma electrons leaving behind a uniform ion channel with transverse focusing fields of up to several thousand tesla per meter. The initial transverse beam size with σ=50–100 μm is larger than the matched size of 5 μm resulting in up to three beam envelope oscillations within the plasma. Time integrated optical transition radiation is used to study the transverse beam profile immediately before and after the plasma and to characterize the transverse beam dynamics as a function of plasma density. The head of the bunch deposits energy into plasma wakes, resulting in longitudinal accelerating fields which are witnessed by the tail of the same bunch. A time-resolved Cherenkov imaging system is located in an energy dispersive plane downstream of the plasma. It images the beam onto a streak camera allowing time-resolved measurements of the beam energy spectrum as a function of plasma density. Preliminary experimental data from the first three runs are compared to theory and computer simulations. © 2000 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: Magnetic aftereffects (MAEs) of the initial reluctivity have been measured over times of 1–106 s in the as-quenched state of amorphous alloy Fe40Ni40P14B6 at 500 K. A considerable decrease in the relaxation amplitude observed for times t〉103–10 s has been interpreted in terms of a superposition of two different mechanisms resulting from (i) quasi-reversible, local rearrangements of two-level systems, and (ii) irreversible, wide-range order relaxation due to the migration of free volumes.2 Here we report on the results obtained from fractal analysis of the short-time MAE region (t(approximately-less-than)200 s). Fitting of the stretched exponential,3 exp[−(t/τ)ρ], (0〈β〈1), to the experimental data yielded values of ρ in the range 0.15–0.30. This implies a spectral (fracton) dimension d˜ of 0.3–0.6 for this alloy. In terms of a postulated ultrametric distribution of random energy barriers, this means a hierarchy with a low degree of ramification (Z∼1.2).

Notes: Double layers of (100)-oriented Fe with an individual thickness of ≈100 A(ring), separated by interlayers of Cr or Au with variable thickness were grown epitaxially on Au (100) surfaces. The spin-wave mode spectra of these double layers as detected by means of light scattering were used to measure the effective exchange coupling of the Fe films across the interlayer. For Au interlayers it decreases monotonically with increasing Au thickness dAu and disappears at dAu(approximately-greater-than)20 A(ring). For Cr interlayers of proper thickness dCr, i.e., 4 A(ring)(approximately-less-than)dCr(approximately-less-than)9 A(ring) we obtain antiferromagnetic coupling of the Fe layers. In small external fields such double layers order antiparallel with their magnetization perpendicular to the external field in analogy to the spin-flop phase of antiferromagnets. This is revealed by the behavior of the static magnetization of such samples as a function of external field and the spectrum of spin-wave modes with the wave vector parallel to a small external field.

Notes: Thin films of Fe when separated by approximately 8 A(ring) of Cr couple antiferromagnetically. Evidence for this comes from spin-wave-mode spectra as measured by means of light scattering and hysteresis curves, here obtained by means of the magneto-optic Kerr effect. Based on new and more-detailed data we would like to discuss the behavior of a particular spin-wave mode due to the spin canting induced by the antiferromagnetic coupling. It is related to a Goldstone mode. The experiments also show that antiferromagnetic coupling occurs not only for films grown along [100] but also for films grown along [110]. We discuss the implications of this observation.

Notes: The singlet–triplet splitting (2J=EST) is calculated in bis-[bromo-(N,N-diethylaminoethanolato)copper(II)], belonging to the group of alkoxo-bridged copper(II) dimers, by a recently proposed ab initio method. The singlet–triplet splitting energy is obtained by a perturbation expansion closely related to Anderson's formalism. The role of all valence electrons is taken into account and it is shown to be very important in order to obtain a satisfying agreement with the experimental result. Two important facts, from a computational point of view, are tested: influence of the atomic basis set size, and influence of modifying of the ligands. Changes in the basis set of the bridging atoms can induce variations in the results from 10% to 20%. As a final result, the theoretical value of the real complex is calculated to 2J(calc)=−1095 cm−1 and agrees with the experimental one 2J(exp)=−817 cm−1.

Description / Table of Contents: Preparation and Chemical Properties of S-(Trifluoromethyl)-S,N-dihalosulfimides, (Trifluoromethylthio)(thiosulfinyl)amine, and Bis(trifluoromethyldithio)sulfur DiimideOxidative halogenation of CF3SN(SiMe3)2 with F2 or Cl2 leads to CF3S(X)=NX (X=F, Cl) (2a,b). During the chlorination process CF3S(Cl)=NSiMe3 (3a) was isolated and characterized as an intermediate. It reacts with CF3SCl to give CF3S(Cl)=NSCF3 (3b) which was also obtained from (CF3S)2NH and Cl2 at -60°C. Similarly, CF3S(F)=NSCF3 (3c) was synthesized from (CF3S)2NH and F2 or from CF3SF3 and CF3SNH2. 3a - c decompose already at temperatures 〈20°C to form (CF3SN)4 and Me3SiCl or CF3SX (X=F, Cl), respectively. In the presence of quinoline or acridine CF3SNH2 condenses with S2Cl2 to CF3SN=S=S (4a). Its constitution was ascertained by chemical reactions and an 1,3-dipolar cycloaddition to cyclopentadiene (→5a,b). Analogously, CF3SN=S=NSCF3 (4b) reacts with cyclopentadiene to give 5c. Ringopening takes place during the reaction of [S3N2Cl]+ Cl- (6) with Hg(SCF3)2 with formation of CF3SSN=S=NSSCF3 (7) which was also obtained from (CF3SS)2NH and (ClSN)3 in the presence of pyridine. Physical and spectroscopic data of the compounds are reported.

Notes: The giant anterior salivary gland cells from the large mammalian blood-sucking, glossiphoniid leech, Haementeria ghilianii, can be subdivided into three morphologically and functionally distinct regions: (1) a soma, responsible for the synthesis and storage of secretory products; (2) a long cell process, responsible for the storage and intracellular transport of the secretory vesicles; and (3) the site of exocytosis at the process terminal. The giant somata are densely packed with secretory vesicles. Deep plasmalemmal invaginations invade the soma and form an extensive system of extracellular lacunae. The rough endoplasmic reticulum (ER) and the Golgi apparatus are organized in the cell periphery, near the highly branched nucleus, and along the lacunae. The somata taper into long processes extending over several centimeters to the proboscis tip. These contain secretory vesicles through their whole length. In the process periphery, the vesicles are completely ensheathed by a concentric subplasmalemmal smooth ER cisterna. This originates deeply within the soma and extends through the whole cell process to its terminal. The ER provides support for up to several hundred longitudinally oriented microtubules. Secretion occurs at the very tip of the cell processes, each of which terminates at the proboscis tip at the base of a cuticular pore.We found synapses close to the sites of exocytosis, providing morphological evidence for neuronal control of secretion.

Notes: In the present paper we consider spline functions which are piecewise exponential sums of the form Σμ=1m αμeμx. Using the notation of Schumaker [10], we construct recursively computable B-splines of this space, where we make use of a complex contour integral.Furthermore, it is shown that this definition of a B-spline coincides in a certain sense with the ‘usual’ ones. which are based on the concept of generalized divided differences (e.g. [3, 12]).Finally, some additional properties of exponential B-splines are presented, including a differential relation.
