Notes: The ability for biomass colonization of four porous mineral microcarriers (sepiolite, clay, pozzolana and foam glass-Poraver), was studied and related to their surface properties. The surface hydrophobicity of the mineral carriers was a more important factor influencing colonization by the anaerobic consortium than was surface charge. It was possible to correlate linearly the degree of hydrophobicity with the biomass retention capacity. Although the thermodynamic theory did not explain adhesion, an increase in cell attachment was directly related to the decrease of the positive values of the free energy of adhesion. Surface roughness, porosity and the amount of surface Mg2+, were also determinant factors in bacterial immobilization. However a great biomass accumulation can originate a decrease in biological activity due to mass transfer limitations. Journal of Industrial Microbiology & Biotechnology (2000) 24, 181–186.

Notes: Abstract. A method is presented for calculating the frequencies of non-retarded surface plasmons propagating on a semi-infinite medium with a surface profile described by a one-dimension quasiperiodic function. The profiles are generated, in analogy with previous work on quasiperiodic superlattices, by repeating unitary cells constructed according to an inflation rule. Dispersion relations are obtained for a semi-infinite free-electron metal as the active medium, with surface profiles obeying the Fibonacci and Thue-Morse sequences.

Notes: Abstract In view of the possible application in non-aqueous líthium cells operating at relatively high temperatures, molten dimethylsulphone (DMSO2) has been used as the electrolyte solvent in lithium cells at 150°C. The stability of lithium in molten DMSO2 has been found to be good as compared with that observed in organic solvents such as propylene carbonate, thus indicating that the Li+/Li system can be used as a suitable reference electrode in this medium. The electrochemical behaviour of some transition metal oxides has been investigated in LIClO4 solutions in molten DMSO2. The results obtained from voltammetric and chronopotentiometric measurements have shown a satisfactory behaviour for all the cathodic materials tested. Moreover, electrochemical insertion of Li+ ions into the crystal lattice of these oxides is a very fast process. Thus molten DMSO2 appears to be a very interesting organic solvent usable in high energy density non-aqueous lithium cells.

Notes: Abstract We report the preparation, characterisation, and solvatochromic behaviour of bis-(4-methyl-4′-pentyl-2,2′-bipyridyl)(dicyano)iron(II). This is the first compound whose solubility characteristics permit its use as a solvatochromic indicator over the complete range of solvents from water to paraffins.

Notes: Abstract All archaeal histones studied to date have similar lengths, 66 to 69 amino acid residues that form three α-helices separated by two β-strand loop regions which together constitute a histone fold. In contrast, the eukaryal nucleosome core histones are larger, 102 to 135 residues in length, with N-terminal and C-terminal extensions flanking the histone fold that participate in gene regulation and higher-order chromatin assembly. In the Methanococcus jannaschii genome, MJ1647 was annotated as an open reading frame predicted to encode an archaeal histone with an approximately 27-amino-acid C-terminal extension, and we here document the DNA binding and assembly properties and thermodynamic stability parameters of the recombinant product of MJ1647 synthesized in Escherichia coli with (rMJ1647) and without (rMJ1647Δ) the C-terminal extension. The presence of the C-terminal extension did not prevent homodimer formation or inhibit DNA binding, but the complexes formed by rMJ1647, presumably archaeal nucleosomes containing a (rMJ1647)4 tetramer, were apparently less stable than those formed by (rMJ1647Δ)4. The presence of the C-terminal extension increased the thermostability of rMJ1647 when compared with rMJ1647Δ in 0.2 M KCl at pH 4 but not in the absence of KCl at pH 1. Based on thermal unfolding transitions, rMJ1647 and rHAfB generated by expression of AF0337 cloned from the genome of the related hyperthermophile Archaeoglobus fulgidus in E. coli were found to have higher thermodynamic stabilities than all previously studied archaeal histones.

Notes: Abstract: The effect of hydrostatic pressure ( p ? 1.8 GPa) on the non-Fermi liquid state of U2Pt2In is investigated by electrical resistivity measurements in the temperature interval 0.3-300 K. The experiments were carried out on single-crystals with the current along ( I || c ) and perpendicular ( I || a ) to the tetragonal axis. The pressure effect is strongly current-direction dependent. For I || a we observe a rapid recovery of the Fermi-liquid T2-term with pressure. A comparison of the data with the magnetotransport theory of Rosch provides evidence for the location of U2Pt2In at an antiferromagnetic quantum critical point. For I || c the resistivity increases under pressure, indicating the enhancement of an additional scattering mechanism.

Notes: Abstract: The effect of a surface electric field produced by ionic adsorption on the molecular orientation of a nematic liquid crystal sample is analyzed. The eigenvalue problem for a semi-infinite medium is analytically solved both for strong and weak anchoring situations. The threshold instabilities are numerically determined and it is shown that the homeotropic pattern can be destabilized also in the situation of strong anchoring. The dependence of the threshold field on the anchoring strength and on the surface polarization is determined by taking into account also the coupling of the quadrupolar component of the flexoelectric coefficient with the field gradient.

Notes: The contribution of Chrysonilia sitophila in cork stopper manufacture was studied and a simulation of the industrial processing of cork stoppers was performed. Stoppers cut from slabs where mold development was inhibited were compared with others cut from slabs colonized by C. sitophila alone or with several molds, in terms of physical properties and chemical taints. C. sitophila does not produce 2,4,6-trichloroanisole, guaiacol, or 1-octene-3-ol on cork slabs incubated for 66 days. Since some chlorophenol-related compounds contaminate cork slabs during the production processes, metabolic tests were performed to investigate the capability of molds to produce 2,4,6-trichloroanisole by methylation of 2,4,6-trichlorophenol. Degradation of 2,4,6-trichlorophenol by C. sitophila resulted in a very high level of degradation without production of 2,4,6-trichloroanisole. C. sitophila restricted growth of other molds on maturing slabs for at least 30 days. These results show that C. sitophila can be exploited by industrial producers of cork stoppers since it is able to inhibit the development of other molds and it does not produce the compounds responsible for ‘cork-taint’, even in the presence of chlorophenols. Notes: Abstract The CD3OH molecule has been investigated for new far-infrared laser lines by optically pumping with a cw waveguide CO2 laser. The increased tunability (300 MHz) with respect to a conventional CO2 laser permits to pump many new CD3OH lines. As a consequence 108 new laser lines have been discovered, ranging from 42.9 to 1155 μm in wavelength. On some lines the effect of an electric Stark field has been investigated demonstrating a laser frequency tuning. The total number of known FIR laser lines from CD3OH is increased to about 340 making this molecule the most prolific together with CH3OH.
