    Notes: A new low-field resonance technique for determining the initial hard-axis permeability (μ') of materials used in thin film and magnetoresistive heads has been developed. The initial μ' is found to be less than 4πM/Hk due to the internal effective magnetostatic field caused by magnetization ripple, in agreement with the theory and transverse biased initial susceptibility measurements of Hoffmann and others.1 A proper consideration of the in-plane susceptibility for real films includes the Stoner–Wohlfarth anisotropy field (Hk)−1 dependence, modified by the factors due to ripple (B) and skew (E) as defined by Hoffmann. The latter produce internal fields that shift the Kittel resonance versus field plots (fr2 vs H) leftward from their ideal symmetric positions for angles of 0° and 90° between bias field and preferred axis. When resonance data from both orientations are computer-fit simultaneously, we determine the parameters B and E as well as Hk and Ms. The coefficients are believed to have more consistency than those obtained using Hk found from hard-axis magnetization curves. The reduction of the hard-axis μ' is by the factor (1+B+E)−1. The high frequency properties (300 kHz–3 GHz) were measured using a test jig consisting of a shorted-shield strip-line section with a one-turn inductively coupled loop containing the sample and located at the shorted end. Bias fields from zero to 100 Oe were employed. We measure fR reproducibly with an uncertainty of less than 1%. This analysis determines the parameters of interest from measurements under dynamic conditions. Results include Permalloy and amorphous TM-metalloid films. When annealed to reduce Hk, their B parameters increase in accord with theory, assuming invariant structure constants, S. Beyond head applications, the method relates to thin film microwave devices operating near fr in zero field.2

    Notes: King's Lynn is a typical English port and market town, located at the edge of the very flat fenland area in East Anglia. The town doubled in size to its present population of 40000 from the end of the Second World War. Although the sewerage system expanded with the growth of the town, the prevailing flat gradients gave rise to much sedimentation and loss of capacity, while tide-locked outfalls restricted freedom of flow from the storm-overflow facilities. The result was widespread flooding in many areas of the town during relatively minor storms. This paper describes the studies which were carried out using computer simulation methods to identify the weaknesses and deficiencies of the complex sewerage system, and the innovative tunnelling solution which was adopted to overcome the problems. An indication is also given of the benefits of good public relations when working across the urban environment.

    Notes: Abstract A principal components analysis (PCA) of basicranial measurements (Thompson 1991) isolated KNM-ER 1805 as having the highest Principal Component (PC) score on PCI of all the fossil hominids. Two measurements with high loadings on PCI were B12 and B13 and these two measurements indicate the relative positions of the foramina ovale (FO) and infratemporal crests (IT) to the tympanic bone (TP). The object of this study was to compare the two measurements of KNM-ER 1805 with those of other early fossil hominids as well as a sample of extant hominoids. The comparison involved the raw measurements, the index of the two measurements, the coefficient of variation, and a t-test. The results of this comparison showed that KNM-ER 1805 had more forwardly placed foramina ovale than any of the comparative specimens. KNM-ER 1805 possesses a number of other unique features which differentiate it from other hominids including a persistent metopic suture, the form of the premolar roots, and the form of the asterionic region. These apparent unique features mean that KNM-ER 1805 is unlikely to represent an “average” maleHomo habilis and so is an inappropriate model for the male morph of that species.

    Description: The cellular distribution of AMP deaminase (AMPda) isozymes was documented for rat soleus and plantaris muscles, utilizing immunofluorescence microscopy and immunoprecipitation methods. AMPda is a ubiquitous enzyme existing as three distinct isozymes, A, B and C, which were initially purified from skeletal muscle, liver (and kidney), and heart, respectively. AMPda-A is primarily concentrated subsarcolemmally and intermyofibrillarly within muscle cells, while isozymes B and C are concentrated within non-myofiber elements of muscle tissue. AMPda-B is principally associated with connective tissues surrounding neural elements and the muscle spindle capsule, and AMPda-C is predominantly associated with circulatory elements, such as arterial and venous walls, capillary endothelium, and red blood cells. These specific localizations, combined with documented differences in kinetic properties, suggest multiple functional roles for the AMPda isozymes or temporal segregation of similar AMPda functions. Linkage of the AMPda substrate with adenosine production pathways at the AMP level and the localization of isozyme-C in vascular tissue suggest a regulatory role in the microcirculation.

    Description: We have developed a method of fixing, embedding, sectioning, and staining that allows high-resolution detection of myofibrillar structure and myosin immunocytochemical muscle fiber typing in serial semithin sections of LR White plastic embedded muscle at the light microscopic level. Traditional approaches, such as cryostat sections, permit fiber typing, but small myofibrillar lesions (1-3 sarcomeres) are difficult to detect because of section thickness. Semithin sections of hydrophobic resins do not stain well either histochemically or immunocytochemically. Electron microscopy can resolve lesions and discriminate fiber types based on morphology, but the sampling area is small. Our goal was to develop a rapid method for defining both fiber type and high-resolution primary myofibrillar lesion damage. Mild fixation (1-4% paraformaldehyde, 0. 05-0.1% glutaraldehyde) and embedment in a hydrophilic resin (LR White) were used. Myofibrillar structure was extremely well preserved at the light microscopic (LM) level, and lesions could be readily resolved in Toluidine blue stained 500-nm sections. Fiber type was defined by LM immunomyosin staining of serial plastic semithin sections, which demonstrated reciprocal staining patterns for "fast (Sigma M4276) and "total" (skeletal muscle) myosins (Sigma M7523).     Description: Slow oxidative (SO) fibers of the adductor longus (AL) were predominantly damaged during voluntary reloading of hindlimb unloaded (HU) rats and appeared explainable by preferential SO fiber recruitment. The present study assessed damage after eliminating the variable of voluntary recruitment by tetanically activating all fibers in situ through the motor nerve while applying eccentric (lengthening) or isometric contractions. Muscles were aldehyde fixed and resin embedded, and semithin sections were cut. Sarcomere lesions were quantified in toluidine blue-stained sections. Fibers were typed in serial sections immunostained with antifast myosin and antitotal myosin (which highlights slow fibers). Both isometric and eccentric paradigms caused fatigue. Lesions occurred only in eccentrically contracted control and HU muscles. Fatigue did not cause lesions. HU increased damage because lesioned- fiber percentages within fiber types and lesion sizes were greater than control. Fast oxidative glycolytic (FOG) fibers were predominantly damaged. In no case did damaged SO fibers predominate. Thus, when FOG, SO, and hybrid fibers are actively lengthened in chronically unloaded muscle, FOG fibers are intrinsically more susceptible to damage than SO fibers. Damaged hybrid-fiber proportions ranged between these extremes.
