    Notes: Abstract Regional metamorphic rocks that form Late Palaeozoic subduction complexes in central Queensland, Australia, are products of two metamorphic episodes. Synaccretion metamorphism (M1) gave rise to prehnite-pumpellyite and greenschist facies rocks, whereas a subsequent episode (M2) at about 250 Ma formed upper greenschist to upper amphibolite facies rocks of both intermediate- and low-pressure type, probably in a compressive arc or back-arc setting. A similar pattern can be recognized for 1000 km along the New England Fold Belt, although at several localities, where higher grade rocks are exposed, metamorphism was essentially continuous over the M1-M2 interval, with a rapid rise in geothermal gradient at the end of accretion. Where out-stepping of tectonic elements has occurred at long-lived convergent margins elsewhere, similar overprinting of high- by lower-pressure facies series is anticipated, complicating the tectonic interpretation of metamorphism. The discrete character of metamorphic events may be blurred where conditions giving rise to a major episode of accretion and out-stepping are followed by the subduction of a major heat source.

    Notes: A model of quantum Yang–Mills theory with a finite number of gauge invariant degrees of freedom is studied. The gauge field has only a finite number of degrees of freedom since it is assumed that space–time is a two-dimensional cylinder. The gauge field is coupled to matter, modeled by either one or two nonrelativistic point particles. These problems can be solved without any gauge fixing, by generalizing the canonical quantization methods of S. G. Rajeev [Phys. Lett. B 212, 203 (1988)] to the case including matter. For this, the geometry of the space of connections is used, which has the structure of a principal fiber bundle with an infinite-dimensional fiber. Both problems are reduced to finite-dimensional, exactly solvable, quantum mechanics problems. In the case of one particle, it is found that the ground state energy will diverge in the limit of infinite radius of space, consistent with confinement. In the case of two particles, this does not happen if they can form a color singlet bound state ("meson'').

    Notes: The ability of juvenile turbot, Scophthalmus maximus (L.), to elongate and desaturate various polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFA) was examined in relation to their lipid composition. Triacylglycerols were the most abundant lipid class present in the fish and phosphatidylcholine was the predominant phospholipid. In all lipid classes examined the levels of (n-3) PUFA exceeded that of (n-6) PUFA. 18C PUFA were minor components in comparison with 20:5(n-3) and 22:6(n-3). 20:4(n-6) was present in highest concentration in phosphatidylinositol in which it accounted for 16.9% of the fatty acids. When the fish were injected with either 14C-labelled 18:2(n-6), 18:3(n-3), 20:4(n-6), 20:5(n-3) or 22:6(n-3) the highest percentage recovery of radioactivity (69%) in body lipid was observed with 22:6(n-3). With all labelled substrates free fatty acids contained only a small proportion of the total recovered radioactivity whereas triacylglycerols were highly labelled. Phosphatidylcholine/sphingomyelin was the most highly labelled polar lipid fraction. With 14C-20:4(n-6) as injected substrate, 23.2% of the radioactivity recovered in total lipid was present in phosphatidylinositol in comparison with less than 6% with the other substrates. Only small proportions of radioactivity from 14C-18:2(n-6) and 14C-18:3(n-3) were recovered in the 20 and 22C fatty acids of triacylglycerols and total polar lipid. With 14C-20:5(n-3) as substrate, 27 and 33% of the total radioactivity recovered in the fatty acids of triacylglycerols and polar lipids respectively was present in 22C fatty acids. The corresponding values for l4C-20:4(n-6) as substrate were 19 and 18%. The results confirm the limited capacity of turbot to convert 18C PUFA to longer chain PUFA but demonstrate their ability to synthesize 22C PUFA from 20C PUFA. They also suggest a small but specific requirement for 20:4(n-6).

    Notes: The colonial algae Phaeocystis pouchetii and Dinobryon pellucidum dominated the phytoplankton crop at three stations in the Polar Front area of the Barents Sea.Lipid extracted from the seawater containing the phytoplankton was dominated by neutral lipid classes, particularly triacylglycerols, and phospholipids were more abundant than galactolipids at all stations. Polyunsaturated fatty acids comprised between 15 and 26% of fatty acids of total lipid.Of the carbon assimilated into lipid over 24 hours, 40% was located in the neutral lipid fraction. Phospholipids contained a smaller proportion of fixed carbon than galactolipids.No defiinte relationships were observed between the distribution of fixed carbon in photosynthetic end products and the temperature or irradiance at which the phytoplankton was incubated. At a constant irradiance of 8.5 μmol m−2s−1, the highest proportion of fixed carbon was recovered in protein at 4.5°C, but at −1.5°C most radioactivity was present in low molecular weight compounds. Regardless of incubation conditions, lipid always contained less than 30% of total assimilated carbon.

    Notes: Abstract The radiative capture of negative muons by protons can be used to measure the weak induced pseudoscalar form factor. Brief arguments why this method is preferable to ordinary muon capture are given followed by a discussion of the experimental difficulties. The solution to these problems as attempted by experiment #452 at TRIUMF is presented together with preliminary results from the first run in August 1990. An outlook on the expected final precision and the experimental schedule is also given.

    Notes: Abstract A total of 1655 crown-of-thorns starfish skeletal elements were recovered from 237 surface sediment samples from Davies, Centipede, Myrmidon, Hope, Holbourne Island, 22–110, Gannet Cay and Lady Musgrave Island Reefs of the central and southern sectors of the Great Barrier Reef. Three categories of reef may be recognised on the incidence of Acanthaster planci skeletal elements in surface sediment from these and previously studied reefs: category A (abundant, 〉12 elements kg1-), category C (common, 3–8 elements kg-1) and category C (rare, 0–0.1 elements kg-1). These categories parallel estimates of crown-of-thorns populations in the period 1986–1990. “A” reefs have generally experienced high intensity outbreaks, “C” reefs less intense or perhaps less frequent outbreaks and “R” reefs have had little or no crown-of-thorns presence. The incidence of crown-of-thorns skeletal elements in surface sediment potentially provides an indication of population densities and outbreaks over a time scale of several decades. A perspective of contemporary crown-of-thorns incidence on the many reefs of the GBR lacking direct observational records may thereby be obtained. For Holbourne Island a comparison was made of element incidence in an area of known mass mortality induced by poisoning with a control area that was undisturbed. The incidence of A. planci skeletal elements is comparable in the two areas and similar to the incidence established for other reefs such as Green Island and John Brewer where high intensity outbreaks are known to have occurred. A direct relationship between high incidence of elements in surface sediment and mass mortality following outbreak events is indicated.
