Notes: -Trisilane 7 has been synthesized as a potential photochemical precursor of tetra-tert-butylsilatetrahedrane (5) and/or tetra-tert-butylsilacyclobutadiene (6). Astonishingly, only one Si,Si bond is broken upon irradiation of 7 and the silacyclobutenyl radical 9 can be identified as the reaction product. The structure of radical 9, which in the absence of oxygen is persistent even at room temperature, has been elucidated by comparison of its experimental and calculated ESR spectra.

Notes: In continuation of previous investigations of aspartamide-type polymers as drug carriers, polyaspartamides featuring hydrosolubilizing poly(alkylene oxide) side chains in addition to ethylenediamine side-group functions as potential drug-binding sites are synthesized from poly-D,L-succinimide by successive aminolytic ring-opening steps. Yields are in the range of 45-55%. Depending on selected feed ratios, the target polymers contain both the poly(alkylene oxide) and the ethylenediamine groups in systematically varied proportions. Compositions are determined microanalytically and from relative band intensities of the 1H-NMR spectra. The polymers dissolve smoothly and completely in aqueous media and thus fulfill the major design requirement of water solubility. © 1994 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.

Notes: Polystyrene-grafted poly[ethylene-co-(vinyl acetate)] (EVA-g-PS) has been synthesized from functionalized polystyrene containing acyl chloride end group (PS-COCl) and partly (5%) hydrolyzed poly[ethylene-co-(vinyl acetate)] (EVALVA-5%). The graft efficiency is ca. 100% when low-molecular-weight polystyrene is employed. By increasing the molecular weight of the grafts the efficiency decreases. These graft copolymers have been used for compatibilizing polystyrene (PS)/poly[ethylene-co-(vinyl acetate)] (EVA) blends. The ability of the copolymers as compatibilizing agent has been verified by an analysis of the mechanical properties and by scanning electron microscopy.

Notes: The modification of the poly(ethylene-co-vinyl acetate) (EVA) by direct esterification of its ethylene - vinyl alcohol copolymer with mercaptoacetic acid was carried out. The amount of the mercaptan group was controlled to avoid gel formation during the graft polymerization with styrene by chain transfer. The chain transfer constant (Cs) of the SH groups and graft efficiency were measured. These graft copolymers were evaluated as a blend compatibilizer. © 1993 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.

Notes: In vitro studies were conducted to determine the effects of metal ions known to be released from metallic implants in vivo on the expression of lymphocyte surface antigens. Normal human peripheral blood lymphocytes were exposed to various concentrations of metal ions (Fe3+, Ni2+, Co2+, Mo6+, V5+, Cr6+, Cr3+, and Ti3+) for 30 min at 37°C in a 5% CO2 atmosphere, and then analyzed for their ability to form rosettes with sheep red blood cells. Following this preliminary analysis, lymphocytes were exposed to the metal ions found to inhibit the E-rosette reaction (Fe3+, Ni2+, and Co2+) in order to determine which of the following surface antigens were affected: CD2, CD3, CD4, CD8, CD1, CD22, CD10, and HLA-DR. Our results showed that the in vitro treatment of lymphocytes with Fe3+ or Co2+ caused inhibition of CD2 only, whereas Ni2+ caused inhibition of both CD2 and CD3 antigens. These findings suggest that Fe3+, Co2+, and Ni2+ ions may interfere with T cell activation since both CD2 and CD3 are involved in that process.

Notes: Aluminium is generally regarded as a metal that is difficult to plate. By using a pretreatment sequence, which includes immersion in a zincate solution, it is possible to electroplate aluminium successfully, although adhesion levels are not always very high. Zincate solutions modified by the addition of various ions have been shown to promote adhesion. Using one such solution, an investigation has been carried out as to how, by modifying the pretreatment sequence, the adhesion on electrodeposits on aluminium can be improved. Such modifications included varying the etch procedures and using the so-called double dip technique. Some of the factors giving rise to the improved adhesion of electrodeposits have been investigated by SEM, AES, SIMS, ESCA, EPMA and AAS.

Notes: The yeast plasma membrane H+-ATPase generates a membrane electrochemical gradient which is required for the secondary uptake of nutrients. Although the ATPase has previously been shown to be post-translationally regulated in response to the availability of glucose, there has been no evidence to date for transcriptional regulation of the ATPase gene (PMA1). In this work, we have examined the pool of newly synthesized ATPase that accumulates in secretory vesicles en route to the cell surface in the temperature-sensitive secretory mutant sec6-4, and have observed changes in the level of ATPase polypeptide as a function of the glucose concentration in the growth medium. In parallel, there were rapid and reversible changes in the levels of ATPase mRNA. Finally, when cells were grown on a variety of carbon sources, the amount of ATPase polypeptide was proportional to the specific growth rate, suggesting that PMA1 expression is adjusted according to the metabolic state of the cell. These results complement the findings of Capieaux et al. (Capieaux, E., Vignais, M.-L., Sentenac, A. and Goffeau, A. (1989). J. Biol. Chem. 264, 7437-7446), who show that the transcriptional factor TUF/RAP1 binds to upstream activating sequences in the PMA1 gene. Taken together, the results suggest a model in which transcriptional regulation of the ATPase gene by glucose is mediated by TUF/RAP1.

Notes: This paper describes a three-dimensional discrete element method of analysis for granular materials. Individual particles are modelled as rigid, six-sided solids with six degrees of freedom. Various types of contacts are possible among the three-dimensional discrete elements. Models for these contact types are described. Computational aspects of the method, such as techniques for contact detection and data structure, are addressed. Selective results of three examples that demonstrate the application of the method to granular flow problems are presented and discussed.

Notes: Single crystals of the fluoride compound KY3F10 (Oh5) were studied by Raman scattering from 40 to 950 K. Group theory analysis predicts 3A1g + 4Eg + 6F2g Raman-active modes, but the experimental spectra show two F2g modes missing. Over the whole temperature range the frequency shifts are negligible whereas the line widths show a strong increase with temperature. Both reversible and irreversible line width behaviour are exhibited for different temperature runs, indicating a complex microscopic phenomenon underlying the creation of defects responsible for these line widths and their interaction with the different phonon modes. An approximate activation energy for defect creation of ΔE ≍ 0.3 eV can be obtained from the temperature behaviour of the line widths. This activation energy may be connected with the high-temperature ionic conduction mentioned previously for this crystal.
