    Description: This paper examines various first order approximation methods commonly used in structural optimization. It considers several attempts at improving the approximation by using previous analytical results and introduces an adaptation of a first order approximation method using an exponent adjusted to better fit the constraints and reduce the overall number of iterations needed to attain the optimum.

    Description: Meridional tape forces, permeability, and change in model contours were measured on the aft half of a 1.5-m-diameter attached inflatable decelerator (AID). Inflation pressures up to 103 kN per square meter and external pressures of 0.14 to 102 kN per square meter were used. The results indicated that the model stresses were near the desired isotensoid condition. Future AID designs should consider both stiffness and strength of the meridional tapes to obtain the optimum division of load between tapes and fabric. Permeability of pressurized fabric structures is a few orders of magnitude higher than that obtained in the standard low-pressure test on material specimens.

    Description: An application of digital time series analysis to flutter test data processing was conducted. A numerical investigation was used to evaluate the method, as well as its sensitivity to noise and parameter variations. These parameters included those involved with data acquisition, as well as system response characteristics. This digital time series method was then used to predict flutter speed from subcritical response wind tunnel tests. Flutter speeds predicted from forced response, subcritical wind tunnel tests were compared to the experimental flutter speeds.

    Description: The non-linear dynamic analysis of large structures is always very time, effort and CPU consuming. Whenever possible the reduction of the size of the mathematical model involved is of main importance to speed up the computational procedures. Such reduction can be performed for the part of the structure which perform linearly. Most of the time, the classical Guyan reduction process is used. For non-linear dynamic process where the non-linearity is present at interfaces between different structures, Craig-Bampton models can provide a very rich information, and allow easy selection of the relevant modes with respect to the phenomenon driving the non-linearity. The paper presents the employment of Craig-Bampton models combined with Newmark direct integration for solving non-linear friction problems appearing at the interface between the Hubble Space Telescope and its solar arrays during in-orbit maneuvers. Theory, implementation in the FEM code ASKA, and practical results are shown.

    Description: An experimental investigation for estimating the nonlinearity of a diagnostic object was carried out on a single-stage, spur gear reducer. The linearity of the properties of spur gearing (including the linearity of its mode of operation) was tested. Torsional vibrations of the driven wheel and transverse (to the meshing plane) vibrations of the drive wheel on its support were taken as the two outputs of the object to be analyzed. The results of the investigation showed that the degree of nonlinearity of a reducing gear is essentially connected with its operating mode, so that different mathematical models of it can correspond to different values of the system parameters.

    Description: The mobility power flow (MPF) approach is used in this paper to describe the flexural behavior of an L-shaped plate structure consisting of thick plates with rotary inertia and shear deformation effects included in the analysis. The introduction of the thick plate effects significantly increases the complexity of the structural mobility functions used in the definitions of the power flow terms; however, because of the substructuring that is used in the MPF approach, the complexity of the problem is significantly reduced as compared to solving for the global structure. Additionally, with the MPF approach the modal behavior is described. The MPF analysis of the L-shaped plate is performed for the case of point force excitation on one plate, with the two plates being identical in both size and thickness. The results of this analysis are compared to results from the finite-element analysis (FEA) and the statistical energy analysis (SEA) and show very good agreement in the low- and high-frequency regimes, respectively.

    Description: The uses of compliance measurements in linear fracture mechanics are discussed as a technique for determining the crack-extension force vs load, specimen dimensions, and elastic constants. Some practical examples of application are given, including specimen and transducer descriptions, experimental procedure, instrumentation, calculations, measurement precautions, friction effects, and data reduction. The limitations and advantages of compliance measurements are discussed. It is pointed out that good results can be obtained by the compliance method when its measurement precision is not lower than that required for Young's modulus.
