Summary Among red fox a mottling of the coat and skin with large white (albinotic) spots is unusual and has only been observed in conjunction with a general lightening of the coat or among the specially bred platinum foxes. In contrast, an albinotic mottling solely of the undercoat and skin with small white spots frequently occurrs. About 5% of the fox population of Ireland is mottled in this way. These spots are covered by the long upper fur. It is not known how this mottling is inherited in relation to the normal coat. Mr.M. Resch has observed a third form of mottling — an albinotic lightening of the extremities (upper side of the toes and end of the tail) shown by a vixen shot on Dec. 16, 1988 in Frankenburg, Higher Austria, and pictured in St. Hubertus 2/1989, p. 55.
