Notes: As a first step towards objective evaluation of garment appearance, the present work considered seams on three-dimensional surfaces which simulate actual garment surfaces. The geometric profiles of the 3-D seams were scanned using a laser scanner. 1-D and 2-D digital filters were applied to obtain pucker signals from the geometric profiles by removing "high frequency" components due to fabric surface texture and "low frequency" components due to garment silhouette and drape. The advantages and disadvantages of the 1-D and 2-D digital filters are compared. Four physical parameters are examined to see their relevance to the subjective pucker grade. It was found that log(s2), i.e. the logarithm of the variance of the heights of pucker signals, is the best set of physical parameters for the objective evaluation of seam pucker. In addition, latest attempts at capturing and analyzing 3D garment image using a Cyberware laser scanner and Surfacer software are reported.

Notes: Creases are marks that are created and left in a fabric during garment wear. Pressing is a process to flatten garment panels and sharpen garment edges and pleats. To minimize crease, the fabric should recover after pressing without creating a creased edge. Whereas, good pressing performance means the creased edge stays sharp after pressing. Good crease recovery and pressing performance appear contradictory. However, crease recovery and pressing performance are different as creases are formed during wear and pressing is carried out using pressing equipment such as iron, pressing machines, etc. The condition, i.e. temperature and humidity, under which the creases are formed in wear and pressing are very different. The latter has much higher temperature, pressure and humidity. This paper reports on an experimental investigation on the relationship between the crease recovery and pressing performance of wool and other fabrics. It was found that there are only generally weak to moderate relationships between the crease recovery as measured by the Shirley Crease Recovery Tester and the pressing performance as measured by the Siro-Press Tester. The characteristics of wool fabrics, which have both good crease recovery and pressing performance, are identified. This study is a step towards fabric engineering.

Notes: Girdles should be designed to beautify the lower body part of a woman without creating any discomfort and detrimental physiological effects. This paper reports on an experimental investigation into the relationship between the subjective tightness sensation and the clothing pressure of girdles. The subjective tightness sensation is a measure of the effectiveness of girdles, since too loose means the girdle is not effective in shaping the body and too tight means it is not comfortable and may have detrimental physiological effects. Based on this experimental investigation, the effect of clothing pressure on the tightness sensation is better understood and the optimum pressure distribution of girdles, which is an important criterion for product development and evaluation of girdles, is proposed.

Notes: Examines the causes of rippling, localized delamination or surface distortion in fused garment theoretically and experimentally. On the basis of this study proposes a parameter, called rippling potential, to combine the effects of bond strength, differential shrinkage, compliance of outer fabrics and fusible interlinings and fabric formability on the degree of rippling. Suggests preventive measures to avoid rippling in fused garment parts.

Notes: Abstract In this paper, the correlations of gamma ray with other bands are discussed for highly polarized blazars. The results show gamma rays are beamed. It is closely associated with the radio band emission, but not associated with optical or X-ray emissions. Gamma ray emission is likely from resynchrotron-self-Compton (SSC) process.

Notes: Abstract The XBL and RBL samples presented recently by Kollgaardet al. (1996) are employed to investigate whether the extended power of BL Lac objects is correlated with the core dominance parameter. The results show that the two quantities are statistically anti-corelated at a rather high level of confidence for both XBLs and RBLs. Since the core dominance parameter is generally used as a relative measure of orientation and the extended emission of radio sources is assumed unbeamed and isotropic, the results obviously contradict common inference from unified schemes. By adopting and combining some basic concepts of unified schemes and the different SED scenario, a possible explanation for the results is suggested.

Notes: Abstract  Investigation to the mixed convective heat and mass transfer over a horizontal plate has been carried out. By applying transformation group theory to analysis of the governing equations of continuity, momentum, energy and diffusion, we show the existence of similarity solution for the problem provided that the temperature and concentration at the wall are proportional to x 4/(7-5n) and that the moving speed of the plate is proportional to x (3-n)/(7-5n), and further obtain a similarity representation of the problem. The similarity equations have been solved numerically by a fourth-order Runge–Kutta scheme. The numerical results obtained for Pr=0.72 and various values of the parameters Sc, K 1, K 2 and K 3 reveals the influence of the parameters on the flow, heat and mass transfer behavior.

Notes: Abstract In the present study, free convection and heat transfer behavior of electrically conducting fluid in the boundary layer over a vertical continuously stretching surface is investigated. The effects of free convection, magnetic field, suction/blowing at the surface and the stretching speed of the surface on the flow and heat transfer characteristics are considered. By applying one-parametric group theory to analysis of the problem, a similarity solution is found. The governing equations of continuity, momentum and energy are solved numerically by a fourth-order Runge-Kutta scheme. The numerical results, which are obtained for the flow and heat transfer characteristics, reveal the influences of the parameters.

Notes: Abstract Trehalose dihydrate, on careful dehydration below its fusion point, retains its original crystal facets but becomes X-ray amorphous, an unusual example of direct crystal-to-glass transformation. From DSC studies, the glass obtained by this route seems to be of abnormally low enthalpy, but after an initial scan, the normal form of glass transition is exhibited, withT g=115

Notes: Abstract In this paper, accretion disc and synchrotron emission models have been used to analyse simultaneous IR-optical-UV data of the BL Lac object 1727+502. In the following, some of its properties have been discussed. It is shown that the temperature of the disc is about 19, 000°k, the mass of the central black hole isM 8 ≈ 5.4, and the accretion ratio is ≈ 10−3 M ⊙/yr.
