Notes: Abstract The U.S. poverty rate, like many other aggregate economic time series, shows considerable persistence. It is logical to consider the model involving a unit root to provide a good description of the data generation process for the poverty rate. We pretest for unit roots in annual U.S. poverty rate data for the postwar period to examine its long-run features given the importance of a unit root for economic forecasting, macroeconometric cointegration modeling and Granger causality testing. Applying a number of available test procedures for pretesting on U.S. postwar poverty rate data, we find results that both support and contradict the claim that the poverty rate is a difference stationary process. The poverty rate data are found to be consistent with a unit root hypothesis when the alternative isI(0) with a linear trend. But the null hypothesis of a unit root is convincingly rejected when the alternative ofI(0) with a broken trend line for a break at an endogenous point in time is considered. The estimate of the break in the trend corresponds to an information technology shock during the early 1970s.

Notes: Abstract Extension of multimedia services and applications offered by ATM networks to wireless and mobile users has captured a lot of recent research attention. Research prototyping of wireless ATM networks is currently underway at many leading research and academic institutions. Various architectures have been proposed depending on the intended application domain. Successful implementation of wireless connectivity to ATM services is significantly dependent on the medium access control (MAC) protocol, which has to provide support for multimedia traffic and for quality‐of‐service (QoS) guarantees. The objective of this paper is to investigate the comparative performance of a set of access protocols, proposed earlier in the literature, with more realistic source traffic models. Data traffic is modeled with self‐similar (fractal) behavior. Voice traffic is modeled by a slow speech activity detector (SAD). Video traffic is modeled as a H.261 video teleconference, where the number of ATM cells per video frame is described by a gamma distribution and a first‐order discrete autoregressive process model. A comparison of the protocols based on simulation data is presented. The goal of the paper is to identify appropriate techniques for effectively and efficiently supporting multimedia traffic and QoS. Simulation results show that boundaries between different types of services are necessary for multimedia traffic. Reservation for certain traffic type especially video can significantly improve its quality. Reducing the number of collisions is an important issue for wireless networks since contentions lead not only to potentially high delay but also result in high power consumption.

Notes: Condition monitoring is of vital importance in order to assess the state of tool wear in unattended manufacturing. Various methods have been attempted, and it is considered that fuzzy clustering techniques may provide a realistic solution to the classification of tool wear states. Unlike fuzzy clustering methods used previously, which postulate cutting condition parameters as constants and define clustering centres subjectively, this paper presents a fuzzy clustering method based on filtered features for the monitoring of tool wear under different cutting conditions. The method uses partial factorial experimental design and regression analysis for the determination of coefficients of a filter, then calculates clustering centres for filtering the effect of various cutting conditions, and finally uses a developed mathematical model of membership functions for fuzzy classification. The validity and reliability of the method are experimentally illustrated using a CNC machining centre for milling.

    Notes: Abstract Complexes [Co(tren)(Tsal)]ClO4·H2O 1 and [Ni(pn)(py)2(NCS)2] 2, (tren = tris(2-aminoethyl)amine, Tsal = thiosalicylate ion, pn = 1, 2-diamino propane and py = pyridine) have been synthesized and structurally characterized. Both complexes crystallize in the monoclinic space group C2/c with a = 21.3340(6), b = 11.7754(2), c = 14.8076(5) Å, β = 100.3831(10)°, Z = 8 (1), and a = 7.2573(8), b = 17.8810(11), c = 15.2681(12) Å, β = 101.170(2)°, Z = 4 (2). The metal atoms in both cases have distorted octahedral geometry. In 1, the tren ligand is quadridentate and Tsal is bidentate chelate. In 2, the pn ligand forms a bidentate chelate with the NCS ligands in trans positions. Complex 1 is diamagnetic whereas 2 shows paramagnetism with a magnetic moment of 3.10 B. M.

Notes: Abstract 4-p-Methoxy-phenylimino-3-hydroxyimino-2-pentanone has been synthesized, characterized by elemental analysis. IR, NMR and mass spectroscopies and its structure determined by single crystal X-ray diffraction. It crystallizes in the orthorhombic space group P212121, witha=7.2294(7),b=11.540(1),c=14.670(2) Å. Spectroscopic and X-ray data clearly indicate that the oxime tautomer is present. In the solid state, the geometrical isomer is the EZ, which is also the main species in solution according to NMR data. The two C=N bonds are not conjugated to each other.

    Notes: Abstract The dianionic compounds [Fe2(CO)6 E 2]2− (E=S, Se, or Te) show contrasting reactivitites toward propargyl bromide. When E=S or Se, $$\left[ {Fe_2 \left( {CO} \right)_6 \left( {\mu - ECH_2 C \equiv CH} \right)_2 } \right]$$ are isolated from the reactions of [Fe2(CO)6 E 2]2− with propargyl bromide. The S-compound, $$\left[ {Fe_2 \left( {CO} \right)_6 \left( {\mu - SCH_2 C \equiv CH} \right)_2 } \right]$$ is isolated in only one isomeric form (a, e) in which the two $$\left( {CH_2 C \equiv CH} \right)$$ moieties have different orientations, whereas the Se-compound is isolated in two isomeric forms, (a, e) and (e, e). Reaction of [Fe2(CO)6Te2]2− with propargyl bromide yields $$\left[ {Fe_2 \left( {CO} \right)_6 \left( {\mu - TeCH = C = CH_2 } \right)\left( {\mu - TeCH_2 C \equiv CH} \right)} \right]$$ , which also exists in two isomeric forms. Room temperature reactions of $$\left[ {Fe_2 \left( {CO} \right)_6 \left( {\mu - ECH_2 C \equiv CH} \right)_2 } \right]$$ with two equivalents of Co2(CO)8 yielded $$\left[ {Fe_2 \left( {CO} \right)_6 \left\{ {\left( {\mu - ECH_2 C \equiv CH} \right)Co_2 \left( {Co} \right)_6 } \right\}_2 } \right]$$ (E=S, a, e isomer; E=Se, a, e and e, e isomers. All new compounds were characterised by IR and 1H, 13C, 77Se, and l25Te NMR spectroscopy. Structures of $$\left[ {Fe_2 \left( {CO} \right)_6 \left( {\mu - SeCH_2 C \equiv CH} \right)_2 } \right]$$ (e,e), $$\left[ {Fe_2 \left( {CO} \right)_6 \left\{ {\left( {\mu - SCH_2 C \equiv CH} \right)CO_2 \left( {CO} \right)_6 } \right\}_2 } \right]$$ (a,e), and $$\left[ {Fe_2 \left( {CO} \right)_6 \left\{ {\left( {\mu - SeCH_2 C \equiv CH} \right)CO_2 \left( {CO} \right)_6 } \right\}_2 } \right]$$ (e,e), were further established by single crystal X-ray diffraction methods.

Notes: Abstract Static dielectric constants and refractive indices of 2-butoxyethanol-n-hexane and-n-heptane mixtures were measured at 30 and 40°C and the various dielectric excess functionsviz. dielectric constants, molar polarizations, and orientation polarizations were evaluated. The excess dielectric constants and molar polarizations were found to be unsymmetrical and negative over the entire range of mole fraction. The trend in the variation of excess orientation polarization has shown three characteristic regions. The excess functions were smoothed through a variable degree polynomial. The results show the dominance of dipole-dipole interactions in the butoxyethanol deficient regions and weak specific interactions with unlike alkane molecules at higher butoxyethanol mole fractions.
