Notes: Pulse duration as long as 14 μs has been obtained from a single longitudinal mode TEA CO2 laser. Such stretching occurred under conditions for which oscillation on a higher order transverse mode followed that on the TEM00 mode with partial temporal overlap between the two. Control of the intracavity aperture size in conjunction with cavity length tuning helped realize such an oscillation condition. © 2000 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: We have shown theoretically that the maximum repetition rate attainable with a switch for both resistive and resonant charging is independent of the value of energy transferred through the switch in case of a very fast discharge. Experimental confirmation of this has been achieved with a resistively charged 20 kV pulse generator (C was varied from ≅5 to 35 nF) switched by a spark gap into a load whose resistance varied from few ohms to a kΩ. © 1998 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: A laser vibrometry based dynamic technique for biaxial residual stress determination in micromembranes is reported. Layered, low pressure chemical vapor deposition grown, rectangular shaped micromembranes are ultrasonically excited. The resulting micromembrane displacement, as a function of frequency and position, is recorded to yield resonance frequencies and associated vibrational mode numbers. The stress is determined from this information. Vibrations forced from ultrasonic pressure (∼25 Pa) resulted in peak displacements of tens of nanometers at resonance. For the sample set studied, the (3,1) mode resonance peak displayed the least damping in atmospheric testing and was used to establish stress levels ∼108 N/m2. A trend for this stress showing an overall decrease by ∼40% as a result of thermomechanical cycling was identified. © 1996 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: We report on the operation of a high voltage high current switch in which command resonant charging capability is built in. Elimination of switch latch up problems do not require any extraneous and complex circuitry. The indigenously developed switch delivers power in excess of 3 kW into a dummy load typical of a TE laser at a pulse repetition rate of 200 Hz. The test on a real TEA CO2 laser load was, however, limited up to 50 Hz repetition rate beyond which the accumulation of dissociation products within the active volume led to arcing. © 1995 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: We report here that the unique geometry of the rotating dielectric spark gap allows the diode-less operation of a command resonant charging pulser network. An average power of about 3.5 kW with a peak value of 75 MW was switched at a repetition rate of 600 Hz into a dummy load resembling a typical TEA CO2 laser. © 2001 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: We describe here an optically pumped molecular laser cavity configuration which allows near total transmission of pump radiation into the cavity maintaining, at the same time, a high Q value at the lasing wavelength. This also has built into it the capability of elimination of unabsorbed pump radiation, isolation of pump cavity, and suppression of self-focusing effect. The efficient performance of this versatile cavity has been demonstrated in the pulsed operation of a NH3 laser pumped by a transversely excited atmospheric CO2 laser. The low lasing threshold observed here suggests that this cavity can also be employed for the continuous operation of such lasers. © 2001 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: Abstract By judicious imposition of longitudinal mode control onto a resonator cavity, the Q-value of which increases with decreasing wavelength in the 11 to 9 μm region, simultaneous oscillation was obtained on all the four branches from a hybrid CO2 laser when its low pressure section operates in the sub-threshold condition. In the above threshold operation of this section, the hybrid laser lases simultaneously only on 9P, 9R, and 10P branch lines.

Notes: Abstract The steady state throughput performance of distributed applications deployed in switched networks in presence of end‐system bottlenecks is studied in this paper. The effect of various limitations at an end‐system is modelled as an equivalent transmission capacity limitation. A class of distributed applications is characterised by a static traffic distribution matrix that determines the communication between various components of the application. It is found that uniqueness of steady state throughputs depends only on the traffic distribution matrix and that some applications (e.g., broadcast applications) can yield non‐unique values for the steady state component throughputs. For a given switch capacity, with traffic distribution that yield fair unique throughputs, the trade‐off between the end‐system capacity and the number of application components is brought out. With a proposed distributed rate control, it has been illustrated that it is possible to have unique solution for certain traffic distributions which is otherwise impossible. Also, by proper selection of rate control parameters, various throughput performance objectives can be realised.

Notes: Abstract Electrooxidation of methanol in 1 m NaOH at 30°C was studied on graphite-supported platinum electrodes prepared both in hydrogen and in air at various temperatures. Heating in hydrogen always produced higher surface area of Pt, and hence greater mass activity, than in air at a particular temperature. Nevertheless, both the graphite-supported platinum electrodes exhibited almost the same specific activity as a smooth Pt electrode for methanol electrooxidation irrespective of the preparation conditions. This indicates that the difference in mass activity is due to different surface areas produced by the different preparation methods. The Tafel slope of 110 mV decade−1 on all the electrodes studied indicated that the first charge transfer process was the rate-determining step.

Notes: Abstract Optimal regulation of hyperbolic systems in the presence of unknown exogenous and initial disturbances is considered. Necessary conditions for determining the optimal control that tracks a desired trajectory in the presence of disturbances are developed. These necessary conditions have the form of a twopoint boundary-value problem along with certain equality and inequality conditions. The results also characterize the worst possible disturbances that are accommodated by the optimum controller without any serious performance degradation. Numerical results on the control of a vibrating beam are presented.
