    Notes: UV.-irradiation of pivalic and isobutyric acid and their methyl esters as well as of α-hydroxy isobutyric and malonic acid in solution lead to chemically induced dynamic nuclear polarization (CIDNP.) of parent compounds and of various reaction products. CIDNP.-effects and product distributions confirm α-cleavage of the C(α), CO bond to be the major mode of photodecomposition. Scavenger experiments indicate that decomposition of the molecules from a triplet excited state is roughly equally or more probable than from a singlet excited state. Quantum yields of educt disappearance are also given for the methyl esters of pivalic and isobutyric acid.

    Notes: Absolute rate constants and their Arrhenius parameters are obtained for the addition of a cyclic malonyl radical derived from Meldrum's acid to 20 mono- or 1,1-disubstituted alkenes in (±)-propylene oxide and for the addition of the open-chain di(tert-butyl)malonyl radical to six mono- or 1,1-disubstituted alkenes in 1,1,2-trichloro-1,2,2-trifluoroethane by time-resolved electron spin resonance spectroscopy. At room temperature, the radicals add at the unsubstituted C-atoms with rate constants ranging from 1.1. 105 M-1S-1 (acrolein) to 2.4. 106 M-1S-1 (1,1-diphenylethene). The frequency factors are in the narrow ranges of log (A/M-1S-1) = 8.7 ± 0.1 for the cyclic and log (A/M-1S-1) = 8.2 ± 0.2 for the open-chain malonyl species, whereas the activation energies vary from 12.9 kJ/mol (1,1-diphenylethene) to 21.7 kJ/mol (acrylonitrile). They correlate with the alkene ionization potentials and, more weakly, with the reaction enthalpy. No correlation was found between the activation energies and the alkene electron affinities. Hence, the results confirm and quantify the electrophilic nature of malonyl radicals in addition reactions.

    Notes: The first crystal structure of a molybdenum complex 9 with a hydrogenated pterin and a sulfur ligand contributes to the discussion about the active center of molybdenum and tungsten enzymes containing a molybdopterin cofactor. Complex 9 was synthesized through a redox reaction of [MoVIO2 (LN-S2)] (8; LN-S2 = pyridine-2, 6-bis(methanethiolato)) with 5, 6, 7, 8-tetrahydropterin (7). 2 HCl (H4Ptr.2 HCl). The complex crystallizes, with a non-coordinating Cl-atom acting as a counterion, in the monoclinic space group C2/c (No. 15) with cell dimensions a = 22.900(5), b = 10.716(2), c = 17.551(4) Å, β = 120.36(3)°, and Z = 8. We interpret 9 as [MoIVO(LN-S2)(H+-q-H2Ptr)]Cl (q = quinonoid; H2Ptr = dihydropterin), i.e., a MoIV monooxo center coordinated by a pyridine-2, 6-bis(methanethiolato) ligand and a protonated dihydropterin. The spectroscopic properties of this new complex are comparable to those of other crystalline molybdenum complexes of hydrogenated pterins without additional S-coordination. The slightly H2O-soluble complex 9 reacts with the natural enzyme substrate DMSO very slowly, possibly due to the lack of easily dissociable ligands at the metal center.

    Notes: Three kinds of polar substitutent effects are observable in the solvolyses of 1-R-substituted 3-bromoadamantanes (VI). This follows from the relationship between products, rate constants k in 80% ethanol, and the inductive substituent constants σ1q of the substituent R. Alkyl groups and electron-attracting substituents at C (1) control the rate by their inductive effects alone, since logk correlates closely with σ1q. However, rates are higher than predicted on the basis of the respective σ1q values when conjugating (+ M)-substituents or electrofugal groups are attached to C(1). These exalted substituent effects are attributed to CC-hyperconjugative relay of positive charge from the cationic center at C(3) to the substituent at C(1). When the substituent is a strong electron donor (e.g. O- and S-), accelerated substitution gives way to heterolytic fragmentation, rates and products then being controlled by the frangomeric effect.

    Notes: The experimental conditions developed for the detection of rather stable radical cations in solution by electrospray-ionization mass spectrometry (ESI-MS) of a FeII complex of 2-amino-5,6,7,8-tetrahydro-5-methylpteridin-4 (3H)-one (1c) are used to observe the formation of the more unstable radical cations formed from 2-amino-5,6,7,8-tetrahydropteridin-4(3H)-one (1a) and tris(pentane-2,4-dionato)iron(III) ([FeIII(acac)3]; 4) and to monitor their oxidation to the corresponding p-quinonoid dihydropterin complexes. These results contribute to the understanding of the important role played by 6β-5,6,7,8-tetrahydro-L-biopterin (1b; a homologue of 1a) together with iron as constituent of some cofactors. The complexes obtained from 1a and iron may be considered, e.g. as a model of the cofactor of the phenylalanine hydroxylase. Moreover, we describe an improved synthesis of 1c.

    Notes: Absolute rate constants and their temperature dependence were determined by time-resolved electron spin resonance for the addition of the radicals PhĊH2 and PhĊMe2 to a variety of alkenes in toluene solution. To vinyl monomers CH2=CXY, PhĊH2 adds at the unsubstituted C-atom with rate constants ranging from 14 M-1S-1 (ethoxyethene) to 6.7 · 103 M-1S-1 (4-vinylpyridine) at 296 K, and the frequency factors are in the narrow range of log (A/M-1S-1) = 8.6 ± 0.3, whereas the activation energy varies with the substituents from ca. 51 kJ/mol to ca. 26 kJ/mol. The rate constants and the activation energies increase both with increasing exothermicity of the reaction and with increasing electron affinity of the alkenes and are mainly controlled by the reaction enthalpy, but are markedly influenced also by nucleophilic polar effects for electron-deficient substrates. For 1,2-disubstituted and trisubstituted alkenes, the rate constants are affected by additional steric substituent effects. To acrylate and styrenes, PhĊMe2 adds with rate constants similar to those of PhĊH2, and the reactivity is controlled by the same factors. A comparison with relative-rate data shows that reaction enthalpy and polar effects also dominate the copolymerization behavior of the styrene propagation radical.

To alkenes CH2=CXY, ·CH2CN adds at the unsubstituted C-atom with rate constants ranging from 3.3·103 M-1S-1 (ethene) to 2.4·106 M-1S-1 (1,1-diphenylethene) at 278 K, and the frequency factors are in the narrow range of log (A/M-1S-1) = 8.7 ± 0.3. ·CH2CO2C(CH3)3 shows a very similar reactivity with rate constants at 296 K ranging from 1.1·104 M-1S-1 (ethene) to 107 M-1S-1 (1,1-diphenylethene) and frequency factors log (A/M-1S-1) = 8.4 ± 0.1. For both radicals, the rate constants and the activation energies for addition to CH2=CXY correlate well with the overall reaction enthalpy. In contrast to the expectation of an electro- or ambiphilic behavior, polar alkene-substituent effects are not clearly expressed, but some deviations from the enthalpy correlations point to a weak electrophilicity of the radicals. The rate constants for the addition to 1,2- and to trisubstituted alkenes reveal additional steric substituent effects. Self-termination rate data for the title radicals and spectral properties of their adducts to the alkenes are also given.

    Notes: Absolute rate constants for the addition of the highly nucleophilic 2-hydroxy-2-propyl radical to eight fast-reacting 1- and 1,1-disubstituted alkenes in MeOH at room temperature have been determined by laser flash photolysis. Also the absorption spectra of the 2-hydroxy-2-propyl and the benzylic and alkyl-type adduct radicals are presented. The rate constants were obtained using various methods for the analysis of the kinetic traces and support earlier findings.

    Notes: Chiral supermolecules may be obtained from suitable achiral molecular constituents associated through a dissymmetrizing interaction mode. This is the case for the supermolecules I-IV formed by hydrogen-bonding association between the achiral complementary components 1a,b and 2a,b,c. The crystal structures of the supermolecular pairs I-III and of the homochiral aggregate of two ternary supermolecules IV have been determined. The structural data are discussed.
