Notes: Abstract Aqueous agar gels were directionally frozen in a temperature gradient of 10 °C/ cm at rates between 8.8×10−5 cm/sec and 8.8×10−4 cm/sec to form highly anisotropic ice-agar composites. Observations of the vitrified agar domains which were localized at the ice grain boundaries were made and the ice domain size was measured as a function of the solidifying conditions. The segregation of the noncrystalline agar was dominated by the vitrification character of the agar gel. Thermal analysis indicated that ice crystallization rate decreased to a negligible level as the water content of the gel decreased to approximately 50 percent by weight agar.

Notes: Abstract A simple method for adjusting light coupling between two waveguides is presented. The method involves trimming the interaction length by loading a metal film on to one of the coupled-waveguides. It is effective only for the TM mode, and trimming can be achieved very simply. The operational principle is experimentally examined using an optical directional coupler fabricated inc-plate LiNbO3.

Notes: Abstract Two egg parasitoid species, Telenomus nawai and Telenomus spec. are similar morphologically but they have been treated as different species because of their different reproductive forms, arrhenotoky and thelytoky. Male progeny were produced from the thelytokous colony of Telenomus spec. (TT) by heat and antibiotic treatments. These males mated successfully with females of arrhenotokous colony of T. nawai (AT) and the females produced on average 19.1% males. This percentage did not differ from that obtained from AT females mated with AT males (19.4%). Diagnostic PCR indicated that TT is infected with Wolbachia; antibiotic treatments eliminated Wolbachia from TT. These facts suggest that Wolbachia causes thelytoky and Telenomus spec. (TT) is conspecific with T. nawai (AT).

Notes: Abstract The small brown planthopper, Laodelphax striatellus (Homoptera, Delphacidae), shows reproductive cytoplasmic incompatibility between laboratory-cultured strains. Wild planthoppers, were crossed for the purpose of examining the incompatibility principle in allopatric field populations. On the basis of the incompatibility recorded in field populations, Japanese planthopper populations were divided into two groups: one from the north-eastern part and one from the western part of Japan. Crosses between the females of the former group and males of the latter gave infertile eggs, showing unidirectional incompatibility. A small number of eggs from incompatible pairs, however, developed normally.

Notes: Abstract. We investigate the meson, baryon and anti-baryon productions in $\pi p$ and $Kp$ collisions in terms of a constituent cascade model which includes charm flavour. The constituent diquark in an incident baryon has a tendency to get a large momentum fraction, resulting in considerable difference of subenergies for particle productions from quark-diquark and quark-antiquark chains in a meson-baryon collision. As a consequence, the leading particle effects on $D$ meson productions are expected to be quite different in $\pi^+$ and $\pi^-$ beams at present accelerator energies.

Notes: Abstract We present a cascade model which can treat both diffractive and non-diffractive mechanisms. Single-particle inclusive spectra in soft hadron-hadron interactions are investigated and compared with recent data. The model gives an overall description of hadron productions in the wholex region and is in a good agreement with the data.

Notes: Abstract The improvement of optical gain is an important priority for performance design in most of optoelectronic integrated devices (OEIDS). A two-dimensional simulator is developed for the rigorous analysis and optimum design of devices. With it, we analyze the characteristics of heterojunction phototransistor (HPT) which acts as a light-detector in OEID, and we propose new structures of HPT to increase the conversion gain without much increase in dark current. Then, the simulation of an OEID composed of an HPT integrated over a light-emitting diode (LED) is implemented, and it is shown that the new structures significantly improve the optical amplification for low input light power over the conventional structure.

Notes: Summary The analog of h-CGRP, des-Ala-deamino-dicarba-h-CGRP, was synthesized by the combination of the conventional solution and the solid phase peptide synthesis methods. This analog showed stronger and longer-lasting hypocalcemic and hypophosphatemic activities than the natural hormone.

Notes: Summary Scanning electron microscopy of granulosa cells (GC) and granulosa cell-like structures (GCLS) revealed that both had lacy foldings, or plicae, on the surface and were identical. The plicae did not always cover the entire surface of GC or GCLS. Both structures were interconnected by multivalent processes.

Notes: Abstract Using an excimer laser-pumped CARS spectrometer, single-pulse temperature measurements have been performed with a repetition rate of up to 80 Hz in a 3-dimensional, phase-matched geometry. Single-pulse temperature data measured in a furnace typically fluctuated by ± 50 K within the temperature range 300–1300 K. The CARS spectra were analyzed by the G-matrix formalism with inclusion of cross coherence effects.
