Notes: Abstract This paper describes a new implementation method for Boolean operations between solids with free-form surfaces. Boolean operations consist of two processes-topological modification and geometric modification-which are performed separately in our method. This separation makes the Boolean operation process simple and robust. Surfaces contained in the final solid are interpolated by the repatching facility using Gregory patches.

Notes: Abstract An enhancement of the critical current density (to more than 106 A/cm2 below 65 K) of Gd1Ba2Cu3O7−x superconducting thin films was achieved by X-ray irradiation with oxygen annealing. This process of X-ray irradiation with oxygen annealing introduced stable pinning centers into the crystal and also increased the activation energy from 0.1 eV to 0.25 eV.

Notes: Summary Behavioral differences of queens of the obligately monogynous and facultatively polygynous forms ofCamponotus nawai complex were examined. Queens of the monogynous form were groomed by and received food from workers more frequently but they walked about inside nests less frequently than queens of the polygynous form. Hierarchical relationships were not observed among queens of polygynous nests. In general, those queens were equally cared for by workers, aggregated around the center of nests, and showed no hostility toward each other.

Notes: Summary Field studies ofPolyrhachis moesta revealed that colonies were facultatively founded by more than one queen, even though each established colony was inhabited by only one queen with her workers. In pleometrotic colonies, it was found that cofoundresses frequently exhibited cooperative behaviors, including trophallaxis. The results of DNA fingerprinting showed that multiple foundresses were not genetically to one another. It seems that they aggregate randomly and independently of their relatedness. A discussion of the reasons why foundresses ofP. moesta do not aggregate preferentially with genetically related females.

Notes: Abstract  An allele of the apple ripening-specific 1- aminocyclopropane-1-carboxylate (ACC) synthase gene (Md-ACS1–1) has a 5′-flanking region possessing an inserted retroposon-like sequence. Apple species can be classified into three groups that are heterozygous or homozygous for the ACS1–1 and ACS1–2 alleles. We measured the internal ethylene concentration (IEC) in climacteric fruit of 35 apple cultivars with respect to genotype. Eleven ACS1–2 homozygous cultivars exhibited much lower IECs than cultivars homozygous or heterozygous for ACS1–1. Furthermore, F1 ACS1–2 homozygous progeny derived from crosses between heterozygous cultivars had fruit with a very low IEC. These results are in accord with previous data indicating the absence of transcription from ACS1–2 in a heterozygous cultivar. Since the low level of ACS1 mRNA in climacteric fruit was observed in several ACS1–2 homozygous cultivars, we conclude that the low level of ethylene production in some cultivars is caused by the mutated allele of ACS1, which is the main gene responsible for ethylene production during ripening.

Notes: Abstract. To evaluate further the signal transduction mechanisms involved in the short-term modulation of Na-K-ATPase activity in the mammalian kidney, we examined the role of phospholipase C-protein kinase C (PLC-PKC) pathway and of various eicosanoids in this process, using microdissected rat proximal convoluted tubules. Dopamine (DA) and parathyroid hormone (either synthetic PTH1-34 or PTH3-34) inhibited Na-K-ATPase activity in dose-dependent manner; this effect was reproduced by PKC530-558 fragment and blocked by the specific PKC inhibitor calphostin C, as well as by the PLC inhibitors neomycin and U-73122. Pump inhibition by DA, PTH, or arachidonic acid, and by PKC activators phorbol dibutyrate (PDBu) or dioctanoyl glycerol (DiC8) was abolished by ethoxyresorufin, an inhibitor of the cytochrome P450-dependent monooxygenase pathway, but was unaffected by indomethacin or nordihydroguaiaretic acid, inhibitors of the cyclooxygenase and lipoxygenase pathways of the arachidonic acid cascade, respectively. Furthermore, each of the three monooxygenase products tested (20-HETE, 12(R)-HETE, or 11,12-DHT) caused a dose-dependent inhibition of the pump. The effect of DA, PTH, PDBu or DiC8, as well as that of 20-HETE was not altered when sodium entry was blocked with the amiloride analog ethylisopropyl amiloride or increased with nystatin. We conclude that short-term regulation of proximal tubule Na-K-ATPase activity by dopamine and parathyroid hormone occurs via the PLC-PKC signal transduction pathway and is mediated by cytochrome P450-dependent monooxygenase products of arachidonic acid metabolism, which may interact with the pump rather than alter sodium access to it.

Notes: Abstract We consider a quantized vortex line parallel to the interface between the concentrated (c) and dilute (d) phases of a liquid 3 He- 4 He mixture. The vortex produces a groove-like distortion of the interface deflected into the d-phase. As a vortex approaches the interface, the bending flexure increases, reaching a maximum of 0.65μm at a critical distance of 1.3μm. Closer positions become absolutely unstable. Distortion of the interface leads to strong reduction of the threshold (6.3cm/s) for the Helmholtz-Kelvin tangential instability.

Notes: Abstract We report the results of the first systematic study of the dynamical properties of the interface between the phase-separated 3 He- 4 He liquid mixtures. With the acousic sound wave of 10MHz, we determined the kinetic growth coefficient of the interface in the temperature range from 150mK down to 7mK. Below about 70mK, it starts increasing with the decrease of temperature and shows an approximate temperature dependence of 1/T 2 . The magnitude and the temperature dependence cannot be explained with the existing theory of the hydrodynamic regime.
