Notes: : Collaborative watershed groups have formed at a significant rate throughout the United States in the last decade. Data on these groups, however, has been largely anecdotal and lacking in rigorous examination of the relationship between group formation, membership, process, and group effectiveness. Using a mail survey, Oregon watershed group participants were asked to identify who initiated the formation of the group, how efficiently the group formed, how the group determines membership, what decision making method the group uses, and how members perceive the group's effectiveness. Findings indicated that a majority believe that, because of their participation in a watershed group, they better understand issues in the watershed and the perspectives of others, but less than half believe that relationships with government decision makers or physical conditions in the watershed have improved. Members of citizen initiated groups rated their groups higher than government initiated groups on addressing difficult or controversial issues. Members of groups that use consensus responded most positively on whether the group gives fair consideration to dissenting opinions. Overall, groups with restricted membership systems rated themselves lowest on involving key decision making groups, timeliness in addressing issues, and overall effectiveness. These results raise concerns about this type of group membership system.

Notes: This study, based on a comparison of the Combined Code Guidelines for non-executive directors between listed and unlisted boards, suggests that on unlisted boards non-executive directors have a greater degree of involvement in strategic development, financial monitoring, shareholder communication and overall board contribution than on listed boards, but a lesser degree of involvement in the monitoring of management, the setting of executive remuneration, the appointment and removal of executives, and succession planning. The importance of risk analysis and induction is considered high across both sectors, although board development and independence is considered less important on unlisted boards.

Notes: Although cliffs form approximately 75% of the world's coastline, the understanding of the processes through which they evolve remains limited because of a lack of quantitative data on the morphological changes they undergo. In this paper the combination of terrestrial time-of-flight laser scanning with high-resolution digital photogrammetry is examined to generate high-quality data-sets pertaining to the geomorphic processes governing cliff development. The study was undertaken on a section of hard rock cliffs in North Yorkshire, UK, which has been monitored over a 12-month period. High-density, laser-scanned point clouds have been used to produce an accurate representation of these complex surfaces, free from the optical variations that degrade photographic data. These data-sets have been combined with high-resolution photographic monitoring, resampled with the fixed accuracies of the terrestrial laser survey, to generate a new approach to recording the volumetric changes in complex coastal cliffs. This has led to significant improvements in the understanding of the activity patterns of coastal cliffs.

Notes: Purpose - The purpose of this work is to elucidate how price, brand cues and customer value are related, and to explore the influence of price and brand cues through service quality and perceived risk on customer value, focusing specifically on Taiwan. Design/methodology/approach - Samples were collected using a questionnaire which assessed the quality of our measurement efforts by investigating reliability and validity. We then compared our hypothesized model with a rival model based on the overall fit, parsimony, and percentage of model parameters that were statistically significant. Findings - Service quality is found to be positively affected by brand cues, whereas perceived risks are negatively influenced by price cues. Exactly how customer value is affected by the service quality and perceived risk is considered. Brand cues notably indirectly affect customer value through service quality, whereas price cues notably indirectly affect customer value through perceived risk. Research limitations/implications - For future research, how other external cues may influence perception of quality and risk with extrinsic information should be discussed. Practical implications - In practice, bank managers can hone the relevant cues and optimize investments to raise service quality or lower consumers' perceived risk. Originality/value - This study provides a new perspective of the "structural" relationships among price and brand cues, service quality and perceived risk.

Notes: Purpose - The growing interest in e-government raises the question of stages in e-government development. A few stage models for e-government have been proposed. Without a common e-government stage model, different research in e-government may be based on different stage models. This presents a difficulty in comparing and understanding different research results. In this research, we synthesize the existing e-government stage models so that there is a common frame of reference for researchers and practitioners in the area. Design/methodology/approach - This research utilizes a qualitative meta-synthesis methodology to synthesize different e-government stage models. The meta-synthesis follows the steps used in meta-ethnography. Findings - Five different e-government stage models were used in this research. We translated the stages within different models into one another and developed a new e-government stage model. The new e-government stage model has the following five stages: web presence, interaction, transaction, transformation, and e-democracy. Research limitations/implications - The paper contributes to e-government theory development. The new five-stage model provides a synthesized conceptual framework for researchers to evaluate and understand e-government development. Practical implications - The synthesized e-government stage model presents a road map for practitioners to follow in their e-government projects. Originality/value - The research uses an innovative and new research methodology to synthesize the existing research. It is one of the first research in the information systems area to make use of meta-synthesis approach to consolidate the existing qualitative research. This paper is also one of the one papers to systematically come up with an e-government stage model.

Notes: The relation between real estate investment trust (REIT) returns and stock market returns is of significant importance to investors, practitioners and academics. The temporal properties of this relationship have a critical impact on the usefulness of REIT risk estimates and portfolio allocations to this asset class. Recent studies have suggested a decline in the market betas of equity real estate investment trusts (EREITs). This study applies a rigorous statistical test of the hypothesis that the market betas of EREITs have remained unchanged during the 1972 through 2002 time period. There is weak evidence of a downward trend in EREIT betas using a single-factor model; however, the hypothesis is not rejected when using a three-factor model.

Notes: We use carbon aerogels and nanofoams as conductive, ultraporous platforms onto whichultrathin (〈5-nm thick) conformal poly(o-methoxyaniline) coatings are applied using self-limitingelectrodeposition. The electroactive polymer coating is incorporated to increase the overall chargestoragecapacity of the resulting hybrid electrode structure. Nitrogen-sorption techniques are usedto characterize the carbon nanoarchitecture pore structure before and after application of thepolymer coating. The subtle modifications of the carbon nanoarchitecture with the polymer coatingare correlated with the resulting electrochemical properties, as determined by cyclic voltammetryand electrochemical impedance spectroscopy
