    Description: A recent molecular phylogenetic study of Mallotus and related genera showed that three small Asiatic genera are clearly part of a strongly supported main Mallotus clade (Mallotus s.s. clade), rendering the genus paraphyletic. In this paper these genera, Neotrewia, Octospermum and Trewia, are merged with Mallotus. The monotypic Neotrewia and Octospermum were originally described within Mallotus and are now transferred back to it. Trewia was never included in Mallotus; it has two distinct species, for which new combinations within Mallotus are made. A full taxonomic treatment with descriptions, distribution maps and drawings is given for the species transferred, and a new generic description for Mallotus is provided. The morphology of the newly transferred species in comparison to Mallotus in general and to related species in particular is discussed.

    Description: Two new brachyuran species are described for the Upper Cretaceous Mexcala Formation, Guerrero State, Mexico. Longusorbis quadratus new species (Coniacian, Temalac region) is the oldest and southernmost record for the genus. Xanthosia zoquiapensis new species (Campanian, Zoquiapa region) is the first record for the genus in Mexico. In addition, the age for Costacopluma bishopi Vega and Feldmann is discussed (Coniacian, Temalac region) and represents the oldest and southernmost record for Cretaceous representatives of this genus in North America. All specimens are considerably smaller compared to other species of the same genera and are interpreted as the first example of brachyuran dwarfism in the geological record. These species add new insight into possible migratory routes during the Late Cretaceous. Within Longusorbis, a northwestern migratory route is documented from the Coniacian in Mexico to the Campanian - Maastrichtian of the west coast of North America (Canada), whereas within the genus Xanthosia, a western migratory route from the Albian of Europe to the Campanian of Mexico is indicated. Costacopluma migrated east and north to the west coast of Africa, southeast North America and Greenland.

    Description: A new species of Astrogorgia from Bali, Indonesia, is described and depicted. An amended diagnosis of the genus is presented and a related genus is discussed. Compared with other species of Astrogorgia, specimens of the new species have a rather unusual bushy growth form, and very small sclerites.

    Description: A survey of seaweeds was made in Eritrea in December 1995 and January 1996 on some islands of the Dahlak Archipelago and the surroundings of the port town of Massawa. During our study 101 specific and infraspecific taxa were identified, including 26 Chlorophyta, 20 Phaeophyta and 55 Rhodophyta. The survey resulted in 36 new records for Eritrea (11 Chlorophyta, 7 Phaeophyta and 18 Rhodophyta). Of these Eritrean records, 26 are new for the Red Sea (5 Chlorophyta, 4 Phaeophyta and 17 Rhodophyta). Comparison of records of seaweeds from localities in Eritrea to those from other localities in Eritrea as well as from other coasts of the western Indian Ocean have revealed that the regional distribution of seaweeds in the Red Sea is very patchy and that generally the area seems to be undersampled. The comparisons have also underscored the stressful seasonal environmental conditions for macroalgae in the southern Red Sea.

    Description: A new genus of nephtheid soft corals is described from the Indo-Pacific, 53 species are included, 34 of which are new to science: Chromonephthea aldersladei spec. nov., C. bayeri spec. nov., C. benayahui spec. nov., C. braziliensis spec. nov., C. brevis spec. nov., C. cairnsi spec. nov., C. cobourgensis spec. nov., C. egmondi spec. nov., C. exosis spec. nov., C. franseni spec. nov., C. frondosa spec. nov., C. fruticosa spec. nov., C. goudi spec. nov., C. grandis spec. nov., C. grasshoffispec. nov., C. hoeksemai spec. nov., C. hornerae spec. nov., C. imaharai spec. nov., C. imperfecta spec. nov., C. levis spec. nov., C. megasclera spec. nov., C. minor spec. nov., C. muironensis spec. nov., C. obscura spec. nov., C. ostrina spec. nov., C. palauensis spec. nov., C. rotunda spec. nov., C. simulata spec. nov., C. singularis spec. nov., C. slieringsi spec. nov., C. spinosa spec. nov., C. tentoriae spec. nov. C. variabilis spec. nov., and C. williamsi spec. nov. The other 19 species were previously assigned to the genera Nephthea, Stereonephthya, Dendronephthya and Paraspongodes. Spongodes costatocyanea Burchardt, 1898 is synonymized with C. costatofulva (Burchardt, 1898); Stereonephthya longicaulis Kükenthal, 1911 with C. curvata (Kükenthal, 1911); Nephthya australis Kükenthal, 1910, with C. rubra (Kükenthal, 1910); Nephthya quercus Kükenthal, 1910 with C. rubra (Kükenthal, 1910); and Nephthya granulata Kükenthal, 1910, with C. hartmeyeri (Kükenthal, 1910). The morphological characters used to identify the species of Chromonephthea are discussed. Differences with the related genera Nephthea, Litophyton, Stereonephthya, Neospongodes, and Dendronephthya are mentioned. An illustrated key to the species is provided. The distribution of Chromonephthea species is presented and their apparent endemism is discussed.

    Description: Gulella (s.l.) johannae n. sp. is described from a few forest localities in the Tzaneen District, Limpopo Province, South Africa. It is characterized by a cylindrical, costulate shell with an almost entire peristome and a four-fold apertural dentition consisting of a prominent angular lamella (delimiting an only here discontinuous peristome), a mid-labral denticle, a left basal denticle, and a mid-columellar process. The shell is somewhat similar to that of G. johannesburgensis, but is consistently larger and more slender and has more whorls, while at the same time the apertural dentition is better developed; the almost uninterrupted peristome also appears to be a signifi cant character. This new taxon most likely is a restrictedrange endemic on the eastern flanks of the northern Drakensberg escarpment. Numerical data of a lot of material identified and mostly also published as G. johannesburgensis show that probably not all specimens belong to this taxon so that more than one species may be involved here.

    Description: Thirty-one species of the family Platystictidae of the Philippines are revised, i.e. all species recognised, excluding the species of the Drepanosticta halterata-group. The following new taxa are described: 16 species in Drepanosticta Laidlaw: D. acuta spec. nov., D. aurita spec. nov., D. centrosaurus spec. nov., D. clados spec. nov., D. flavomaculata spec. nov., D. furcata spec. nov., D. hermes spec. nov., D. krios spec. nov., D. luzonica spec. nov., D. malleus spec. nov., D. myzouris spec. nov., D. paruatia spec. nov., D. pistor spec. nov., D. quadricornu spec. nov., D. rhamphis spec. nov., D. trachelocele spec. nov., two in Protosticta Selys, viz. P. lepteca spec. nov. and P. plicata spec. nov., and three in Sulcosticta gen. nov., viz. S. striata spec. nov., S. pallida spec. nov. and S. viticula spec. nov. The status of eleven previously described nominal taxa is established. One, D. septima Needham & Gyger, is doubtfully considered a synonym of D. mylitta Cowley. Based on a preliminary phylogenetic analysis, the species of Drepanosticta are divided into informal species groups. Most species of the Philippines have affinities to species of Sulawesi, the Moluccas and New Guinea. Several species confined to Palawan have sister-group relationships with species from Borneo. The affinities of various other species confined to the Sulu archipelago, are unsettled as yet. The species of Platystictidae here assigned to Protosticta Selys are presumably not closely related to the type species, P. simplicinervis Selys from Sulawesi. However, a better placement has to await a more detailed phylogenetic study of the family. For three species the new genus Sulcosticta gen. nov. is erected. These species are closely allied based on the structure of the appendages, but should have been assigned to different genera if based on the present generic definitions. Many species here described have small distributional ranges, a common phenomenon in Platystictidae. Since most forests in the Philippines are heavily under threat or have already disappeared in the last fifty years, several taxa described in this paper should be considered under threat of immediate extinction.

    Description: A revision of Mallotus section Philippinenses (former section Rottlera) in Malesia and Thailand is given. Descriptions, distribution maps, habit drawings, and a key to the species are provided. The diagnostic characters for the section are briefly discussed. Five species (M. kongkandae, M. leptostachyus, M. pallidus, M. philippensis, and M. repandus) are recognised. Mallotus chromocarpus is excluded from the section because it has more shared characters with the monospecific genus Octospermum, like the presence of indehiscent fruits, absence of stipules, marginal extrafloral nectaries on the upper side of the leaf blade, broad connectives (shaped umbrella-like), and its occurrence in New Guinea, and is therefore probably closely related to it.
