    Description: The importance of detecting possible electromagnetic signatures due to big earthquakes is self-evident, signatures which can be either anticipating, simultaneous or subsequent with respect to the main shock. Taking advantage of the present low Earth orbiting CHAMP satellite, we apply two “ad hoc” techniques both based on the Information Theory (after the seminal monograph by Shannon [1]) to the satellite magnetic data with the aim at extracting eventual time anomalies. These techniques have different time-space resolutions: the first technique requires a preliminary spherical harmonic analysis of daily magnetic data and, potentially, detects long-wavelength variations, while the second uses a preliminary wavelet analysis and can detect shorter-wavelength anomalies. Some examples are given for magnetic satellite data taken in correspondence with the two big earthquakes occurred in the Sumatra region on 26 December 2004 (M = 9.1) and 28 March 2005 (M = 8.6).

    Description: The Spherical Cap Harmonic Analysis (SCHA) is a regional modeling technique based on appropriate functions which are solutions of Laplace’s equation over a constrained, cap-like region of the Earth. The concept was introduced in 1985 in the context of geomagnetism as a local or regional extension of the classic global spherical harmonic analysis. Starting from the basic principles in which the analysis method is founded, this paper describes the latest applications for the modeling of the main magnetic field and its secular variation. Although examples of applications over small areas will be given, it will be shown that, in general, the bigger the region the more appropriate the technique. Therefore, this paper focuses on the results and perspectives over continental areas, like Antarctica or Europe. The possible application to the derivation of isogonic charts for navigational purposes with suitable time predictions will be emphasized. At the same time, the limitations of the method will be examined. Although recent revisions of the technique seem to solve some of the problems, our present research focuses on the quest for solutions to the still unanswered questions.

    Description: From 2000 to 2005 two exploring geophysical missions were undertaken in the Tyrrhenian deep seafloor at depths between around -2000 and -3000 m in the framework of the European-funded GEOSTAR Projects. The considered missions in this work are GEOSTAR-2 and ORIONGEOSTAR-3 with the main scientific objective of investigating the deep-sea by means of an automatic multiparameter benthic observatory station working continuously from around 5 to 12 months each time. During the two GEOSTAR deep seafloor missions, scalar and vector magnetometers acquired useful magnetic data both to improve global and regional geomagnetic reference models and to infer specific geoelectric information about the two sites of magnetic measurements by means of a forward modelling.

    Description: The experience acquired from more than ten years of operation of an Antarctic geomagnetic observatory is described along with the development of data transmission facilities. The observatory was deployed at the Spanish Antarctic Station in 1996. The main instrument was an Overhauser magnetometer deployed in dual axis Helmholtz coils, a δD/δI configuration. The site is only manned during the summer, with the magnetometer left recording throughout the rest of the year. During the 2007-2008 survey the observatory instrumentation has been upgraded with a DMI suspended triaxial fluxgate magnetometer, new sampling hardware and data logging software. Both sampling and timing are carried out under the control of a PIC based microcontroller and GPS receiver. Data presentation, transmission and archiving are performed under the control of a low power embedded PC. For real time access to the data two options have been provided and rigorously tested during the last 10 years: METEOSAT and GOES Data Collection Systems, and recently, a high frequency (HF) digital radio-link, using ionospheric propagation between Antarctica and Spain, has been developed. This latest transmission system is being continuously upgraded, and it would be possible to extend its application to other remote stations. Measurements have been made during the last four years in order to determine the channel characteristics and its variability, mainly the multipath and Doppler spread and the link availability for a given SNR in the receiver. These measurements are being used to design the physical layer of a radiomodem intended to maximize the link capacity keeping the emitted power low.

    Description: Recent studies on the chaotic behaviour of the dynamical system producing the geomagnetic field , i.e. the geodynamo. These studies are based on secular variation data from observatories annual means (Barraclough and De Santis, 1997; De Santis et al., 2002), as well as on global models produced for the last century (De Santis et al., 2004), and have shown some interesting nonlinear properties. Suitable nonlinear techniques can be applied for short term prediction of the geomagnetic field, i.e. to extrapolate the field 1-2 years into the future. Using these methods it is possible to update maps of the geomagnetic field for navigational purposes and to improve the prediction of the magnetic declination at heliports and airports. Declination values are important for the safety and security of all operations related to landing and take-off.

    Description: A Geomagnetic Depth Sounding (GDS) survey covering the Northern Apennines of Italy has been carried out in the period 1992–94. Induction arrows maps and hypothetical event Fourier maps were constructed to obtain an electromagnetic imaging of this area. Since the two dimensional (2-D) character comes out from those maps for periods greater than 32 minutes, a 2-D inverse modeling was carried out. The model responses show that a deep conductive layer (〉5000 S) underlies the Apennine chain at about 20 km depth. The transition between the Adriatic and the Tyrrhenian domains is marked by a rather sharp vertical offset in this conducting layer. In the northwest sector of the studied area an anomalous high conductivity behavior is superimposed on the regional trend, which corresponds to the geothermal field of Larderello-Travale.

    Description: The Italian Magnetic Network is composed of 114 repeat stations and its last complete measurement took place in the period 1999-2001, i.e. centred at epoch 2000. Mathematical models and maps were produced for declination, horizontal and vertical components, together with the total intensity of the geomagnetic field. By the end of 2005 the Magnetic Network measurement will be repeated again completely. To the Italian sites have been added also 11 other stations in Albania . Those were measured in 2004 with the collaboration of the Albanian Academy of Science and the University of Tirana. Together with this activity also another one dedicated to airports or heliports measurements has been undertaken. This kind of measurements has the objective to provide absolute magnetic knowledge of the magnetic declination in airports and heliport swinging roses where it is possible then to calibrate aircraft compasses.

    Description: This paper presents the situation of the geomagnetic measurements over Albanian territory, distinguishing the campaigns of 1942.0, 1961.0, 1990.4, 1994.75 and 2004.7 epochs. The results of the latest model of the geomagnetic field for Southern Italy and Albanian territory are therefore shown. This model was created using SCHA (Spherical Cap Harmonic Analysis) technique, applied on all ground data from three different epochs (1990.4, 1994.5 and 2003.7) and a selected dataset from Oersted satellite mission. The ground data were confined in a small Spherical Cap that we expect to enlarge with ground data from adjoining countries in order to compose an accurate Balkan Geomagnetic Reference Field Model.

    Description: Exploration of ocean seafloor is of paramount importance for a better understanding of the geodynamic evolution of our Planet. The pilot experiment of ORION-GEOSTAR 3 EC project was the first long-term continuous geophysical and oceanographic experiment of an important seafloor area of Southern Tyrrhenian Sea, the Marsili abyssal plain. The latter hosts the Marsili Seamount which is Europe’s one of the largest underwater volcano of Plio-Pleistocenic age. In spite of its dimensions, it is rather unknown about the present characteristics and activity. For this reason, we deployed a deep-sea observatory network, composed by two bottom observatories, on the seafloor at the base of the seamount at 3320 m b.s.l., in the period December 2003-May 2005. Some of the instruments on board the observatory were: broad-band seismometers, hydrophones, gravity meter, two magnetometers (scalar and vectorial), 3D single-point current meter, ADCP, CTD, automatic pH analyser and off-line water sampler for laboratory analyses. The first successful scientific objective was to obtain long-term continuous recordings under a unique time reference. The data analysis shows that they are generally of good quality and really continuous (only a few gaps). As a first step we performed a classification of seismic waveforms, a first inversion of magnetic variational data, and a first analysis of gravity meter, chemical and oceanographic data. Analysis of individual time series has shown interesting results, i.e. depth of the magnetic Moho under the Marsili, attenuation of recorded seismic body waves and clues of hydrothermal circulation. We show examples of the preliminary data analysis together with first results and comparisons among data coming from different sensors.
