Notes:
Summary Quantitative separation of iron as Fe(SCN)3(HMPA)3 complex has been studied in function of acidity, thiocyanate and HMPA concentration. Precipitates of the same composition with definite melting point (187±1° C) were obtained from aqueous media in the range of pH l–3. The molar composition of the complex has been determined by means of elemental analysis. The optimal conditions have been established for a gravimetric determination of iron as Fe(SCN)3(HMPA)3 complex down to concentrations of ≅0.2mgFe/ml with an accuracy better than 1%. At lower concentrations the complex obeys the Beer's law and iron can be determined spectrophotometrically. Coordinate bonding involving the oxygen atom of HMPA has been proved by infrared spectroscopy. The tolerance of many other metal cations is reported.
