Beschreibung: From 2000 to 2005 two exploring geophysical missions were undertaken in the Tyrrhenian deep seafloor at depths between around -2000 and -3000 m in the framework of the European-funded GEOSTAR Projects. The considered missions in this work are GEOSTAR-2 and ORIONGEOSTAR-3 with the main scientific objective of investigating the deep-sea by means of an automatic multiparameter benthic observatory station working continuously from around 5 to 12 months each time. During the two GEOSTAR deep seafloor missions, scalar and vector magnetometers acquired useful magnetic data both to improve global and regional geomagnetic reference models and to infer specific geoelectric information about the two sites of magnetic measurements by means of a forward modelling.

Beschreibung: The experience acquired from more than ten years of operation of an Antarctic geomagnetic observatory is described along with the development of data transmission facilities. The observatory was deployed at the Spanish Antarctic Station in 1996. The main instrument was an Overhauser magnetometer deployed in dual axis Helmholtz coils, a δD/δI configuration. The site is only manned during the summer, with the magnetometer left recording throughout the rest of the year. During the 2007-2008 survey the observatory instrumentation has been upgraded with a DMI suspended triaxial fluxgate magnetometer, new sampling hardware and data logging software. Both sampling and timing are carried out under the control of a PIC based microcontroller and GPS receiver. Data presentation, transmission and archiving are performed under the control of a low power embedded PC. For real time access to the data two options have been provided and rigorously tested during the last 10 years: METEOSAT and GOES Data Collection Systems, and recently, a high frequency (HF) digital radio-link, using ionospheric propagation between Antarctica and Spain, has been developed. This latest transmission system is being continuously upgraded, and it would be possible to extend its application to other remote stations. Measurements have been made during the last four years in order to determine the channel characteristics and its variability, mainly the multipath and Doppler spread and the link availability for a given SNR in the receiver. These measurements are being used to design the physical layer of a radiomodem intended to maximize the link capacity keeping the emitted power low.

Beschreibung: The updated version of the ITalian Geomagnetic Reference Field (ITGRF) for 2000.0 and its secular variation model up to 2005.0 are presented in this paper. The main field model is based on a simple polynomial approximation in latitude and longitude of the geomagnetic field elements computed from IGRF on a 12° ¥ 11° grid centred over Italy. The annual means from L'Aquila observatory were used to determine the baseline level, imposing a constant observatory anomaly bias. This procedure gives a set of 6 coefficients every 5 years from 1960 to 2005 for the horizontal H, total field F, vertical Z and declination D elements of the geomagnetic field. The extrapolation of ITGRF to 2005 is based on an autoregressive forecasting of the L'Aquila observatory annual means. Comparison of the field values computed from the model with those recorded at the other Italian observatory (Castello Tesino) shows that the ITGRF improves the fit of the secular variation pattern with respect to the global IGRF model by a factor of 3. The ITGRF represents a reliable alternative to global models when reducing magnetic surveys to a common reference epoch over the Italian region.

Beschreibung: Taking advantage of the measurements undertaken during the Albanian and Italian magnetic repeat station networks since 1990, as well as of a selected set of Ørsted satellite total field measurements, a magnetic reference model for the region comprising the Albanian territory, the southern part of the Italian Peninsula, and the Ionian Sea is presented. The model, designed to model the components of the main geomagnetic field for epochs between 1990 and 2005, has been developed by means of spherical cap harmonic analysis applied to a cap of semiangle 8°, larger than that investigated to take into account the appropriate spatial wavelength content of the main geomagnetic field over the region. The goodness of the fit to the real data suggests that the model can be used as a reference model to reduce magnetic surveys developed in the area during the time of validity of the model.

Beschreibung: The Earth's magnetic field varies over a wide range of characteristic times, say, from years to centuries, and more. In order to detect some nonlinear features of the geomagnetic field evolution we first apply a nonlinear spectral technique, i.e. bispectral analysis, to the secular variation of Hartland Geomagnetic Observatory (U.K.). Then, due to difficulties of bispectral analysis inherent in the shortness of data, we introduce a simpler, but more efficient, technique called Spectral Phase Analysis for Quadratic Coupling Estimation (SPAQCE). Both nonlinear spectral methods here applied are based on the presence of a phase (sum and difference) coupling in case of quadratic interactions between two constituent components of the physical system underlying the generation of the geomagnetic field. The application of SPAQCE to annual means of a UK combined geomagnetic time series allows us to discriminate nonlinear interactions between couples of characteristic times (specifically 5-6, 5-8 and 2-26 years) of the field generated in the outer core.
