    Notes: Abstract Use of stone bunds to enhance soil and water conservation was first introduced to Tigray, northern Ethiopia in 1981. This study was designed to examine the factors that control the effectiveness of bunds installed on cropland. Qualitative and quantitative assessments of soil loss and sediment accumulation were conducted on 202 plots at 12 representative sites in Dogu'a Tembien district. Mean annual soil loss from the foot of the bunds due to tillage erosion was estimated at 39kgm−1yr−1 or 20tha−1yr−1, a rate which decreased with increasing age of bund. The assessed mean annual soil loss rate by sheet and rill erosion in the absence of stone bunds is 57tha−1yr−1. The mean measured annual rate of sediment accumulation behind the stone bunds is 119kgm−1yr−1/sp or 59tha−1yr−1. The measurements show that the introduction of stone bunds to the region has led to a 68% reduction in annual soil loss due to water erosion. This reduction is due to the accumulation of sediment behind the stone bunds, which occurs faster in the early years after construction and decreases as the depression behind the bunds becomes filled with sediment. New stone bunds are particularly effective in trapping sediment in transport, but regular maintenance and increase in height of the bunds is necessary to maintain their effectiveness. The average USLE P factor for stone bunds in the study area is estimated to be 0.32.

    Notes: Weather damage reduces the value of commercial mungbean. but hard-seededness can reduce the level of damage. However. attempts lo breed large- and hard-seeded mungbean varieties have been unsuccessful. To understand the relationship between seed weight and hard-seededness. these trails were investigated using a quantitative trail loci (QTL) mapping approach with a recombinant inbred population derived from a cross between a completely soft-seeded variety and a completely hard-seeded genotype. The two parental genotypes also had a sixfold difference in seed weight. QTL analyses revealed four loci for hard-seededness and 11 loci for seed weight. Two of the hard-seeded ness loci co-localized with seed weight QTL. When seed weight was used as a covariate in the analysis of hard-seededness from the field data, two of the four hard-seeded QTL remained significant with the effect al one of these remaining unchanged. These results explain why retaining hard-seededness in large seeded mungbean lines has been unsuccessful. The existence of a persistent locus, however. indicated that breeding large and persistently hard-seeded varieties of mungbean may be possible.

    Notes: Lodging is a major constraint to increasing yield in many crops, but is of particular importance in the small-grained cereals. This study investigated the genetic control of lodging and component traits in wheat through the detection of underlying quantitative trait loci (QTL), The analysis was based on the identification of genomic regions which affect various traits related to lodging resistance in a population of 96-doubled haploid lines of the cross ‘Milan’בCatbird’, mapped using 126-microsatellite markers. Although major genes related to plant height (Rht genes) were responsible for increasing lodging resistance in this cross, several other traits independent of plant height were shown to be important such as fool and shoot traits, and various components of plant yield. Yield components such as grain number and weight were shown to be an indicator of plant susceptibility to lodging.     Notes: Although cliffs form approximately 75% of the world's coastline, the understanding of the processes through which they evolve remains limited because of a lack of quantitative data on the morphological changes they undergo. In this paper the combination of terrestrial time-of-flight laser scanning with high-resolution digital photogrammetry is examined to generate high-quality data-sets pertaining to the geomorphic processes governing cliff development. The study was undertaken on a section of hard rock cliffs in North Yorkshire, UK, which has been monitored over a 12-month period. High-density, laser-scanned point clouds have been used to produce an accurate representation of these complex surfaces, free from the optical variations that degrade photographic data. These data-sets have been combined with high-resolution photographic monitoring, resampled with the fixed accuracies of the terrestrial laser survey, to generate a new approach to recording the volumetric changes in complex coastal cliffs. This has led to significant improvements in the understanding of the activity patterns of coastal cliffs.

    Notes: The Environment Agency have proposed that daily flow volume discharged from small wastewater treatment works should be capable of being measured to an accuracy of ±8%, where the daily totalised flow volume is estimated to be greater than 5m3. It is estimated that every water company in the UK has several hundred small wastewater treatment works that will be required to be equipped with the capability of measuring the released daily totalised flow volume for specified periods. This paper investigates the feasibility of modifying existing dosing syphons, which are present within many of these works, to operate as flow measuring devices. Laboratory testing of a full-scale syphon demonstrated that by the addition of two water level detectors and a data logger to monitor the filling part of the syphon cycle, it is possible to accurately calculate the daily totalised flow volume within the Environment Agency’s proposed performance criteria.

    Notes: Movement patterns of Alaska harbor seal pups were studied using satellite telemetry during 1997–2000. Mean tracking duration was 277.3 d (SD = 105.8) for Tugidak Island pups (n= 26) and 171.2 d (108.3) for Prince William Sound (PWS) pups (n= 27). Movements were similar for males and females and were largely restricted to the continental shelf. Multiple return trips of 〉 75 km from the natal area and up to ∼3 wk duration were most common, followed by movements restricted to 〈25 km from the natal area; one way movements from the natal site were rare. Distances moved and home range sizes remained relatively stable or increased gradually from July through winter, then decreased markedly through spring. Monthly movements (maximum distance from tagging location, mean distance from haul-outs to at-sea locations, and home range size) were significantly greater for Tugidak vs. PWS pups. Six of seven pups from each region that traveled farthest and were tracked the longest had returned to their tagging site when their last location was recorded, indicating philopatry or limited dispersal during their first year of life. Seal pups exhibited similar movement patterns in the distinct habitats of the two regions, but differed in the spatial extent of their movements.

    Notes: Lactobacillus salivarius subsp. salivarius UCC118 is a probiotic bacterium that was originally isolated from human intestinal tissues and was subsequently shown in a pilot study to alleviate symptoms associated with mild-moderate Crohn's disease. Strain UCC118 can adhere to animal and human intestinal tissue, and to both healthy and inflamed ulcerative colitis mucosa, irrespective of location in the gut. In this study, an enzymatic technique has been combined with proteomic analysis to correlate bacterial growth phase with the presence of factors present in the cell wall of the bacterium. Using PAGE electrophoresis, it was determined that progression from lag to log to stationary growth phases in vitro correlated with increasing prominence of an 84 kD protein associated with in vitro adherence ability. Isolated proteins from the 84 kD band region were further separated by two-dimensional electrophoresis, resolving this band into 20 individual protein spots at differing isoelectric points. The protein moieties were excised, trypsin digested and subjected to tandem mass spectrometry. The observed proteins are analogous to those reported to be associated with the Listeria monocytogenes cell-wall proteome, and include DnaK, Ef-Ts and pyruvate kinase. These data suggest that at least some of the beneficial attributes of probiotic lactobacilli, and in particular this strain, may be due to nonpathogenic mimicry of pathogens and potentially be mediated through a form of attenuated virulence.

    Notes: In this study, we investigated the moderating role of interdependence (a personality trait that measures the extent to which individuals desire working in a group-based, cooperative setting) on the relationship between competitiveness and one-year objective sales performance. On the basis of data from 133 sales representatives, results indicated that: (a) competitiveness was related to objective sales performance; and (b) interdependence moderated the relationship between competitiveness and objective sales performance such that competitiveness predicted objective sales performance more strongly for those who scored low in interdependence versus those who scored high in interdependence. Implications for sales selection and reward systems and directions for future research are considered.

    Notes: Tetraploid wheat (Triticum turgidum L. var. durum) cv. ‘Langdon’ (LDN) and its near-isogenic recombinant substitution line no. 68 (RSL no. 68) carrying the high grain protein gene Gpc-B1 from emmer wheat, were compared in three greenhouse experiments to establish in which way Gpc-B1 increases grain protein concentration (GPC). At anthesis, RSL no. 68 had higher soluble protein and amino acids concentrations in the flag leaf than LDN. At maturity, both lines presented a similar above ground biomass and grain yield. However, RSL no. 68 showed a higher total N content in ears, grain and chaff than LDN; N harvest index (NHI) was also higher because of a lower straw N concentration and higher grain N concentration. When both lines were grown with a low N supply, and when N supply was interrupted before anthesis, similar trends were observed but the differences in GPC were smaller. It is concluded that RSL no. 68 accumulates a higher GPC than LDN mainly because of a more efficient N remobilization from the leaves to the ears during grain filling.

    Notes: A synthetic amphidiploid species Cucumis hyriviis Chen & Kirkbride (2n = 4x = 38; genome designated as HHCC) has recently been created from an interspecific mating between C. sativus L. (2n = 2x = 14: genome designated as CC) and C. hystrx. Chakr. (2n = 2x = 24; genome designated as HH). This amphidiploid is resistant to root knot nematode, tolerant to low irradiance, and has higher nutritional value than standard processing cucumber cultivars. An allotriploid (2n = 3x = 26; HCC) was derived from a cross between C. sativus L. and C. hytivus Chen & Kirkbride. Diploid meiotic behaviour in C. sativus and C. hystrix involves the development of seven and 12 metaphase bivalents respectively. In the derived allotriploid. univalents. bivalents, and trivalents (at relatively low frequency) were observed at metaphase I indicating that some homeologues from the C and H genomes can synapse. Based on a comparative karyotype analysis of cucumber (i.e. chromosome size and pairing behaviour) and aliotriploid plants, the seven bivalents observed at metaphase I were ascertained to be cucumber homologues, while the 12 univalents were of C. hystrix origin thus confirming the allotriploid karyotypic constitution to be HCC. On average, the frequency of trivalents was 0.24 at diakinesis and 0.22 in 100 meiocytes at metaphase I. indicating the possibility of genetic exchange due to the homoeology between the C and H genomes. After simultaneous cytokinesis, only polyads were observed in pollen mother cells (PMCs) at telophase II, which led to the production of sterile pollen grains. Multi-polarization of chromosomes was dominant at anaphase II. However. in about 20% PMCs. chromosomes separated to form a 7C + 1-2H complement, suggesting a possible method for the production of alien addition cucumber-C hystrix lines through further backcrossing of the allotriploid to diploid cucumber.
