Notes: Using the basic distinction between organisational and post-organisational career orientation, this article examines preferences of business school graduates for different types of career fields and systematic differences between people with different career orientations in terms of behavioural characteristics as well as personality traits. The results show that business school graduates clearly distinguish between organisational and post-organisational career fields. Graduates with post-organisational career aspirations display attributes of high flexibility, leadership motivation, selfpromotion/self-assertion, self-monitoring, networking and less self-consciousness. For individuals preferring an organisational career pattern, inverse relationships apply. Some implications of the findings for HR practice are discussed.

Notes: This paper explores user-driven organizational change in the National Health Service (NHS). The NHS Plan (Department of Health, 2000) created Patient Advice and Liaison Services (PALS) to provide information, solve problems and drive user-led change. Evidence is drawn from a study of PALS in London acute, primary care, mental health and specialist trusts, drawing on discussion forums, interviews with PALS officers and documentation. From context and role profiles, two conclusions are evident. First, organizational instability, boundary disputes, variable management support, resource limitations, financial insecurity and multi-site working characterize the context in which PALS operate, and the officer role is characterized by problem diversity, overlap with complaints systems, monitoring problems, relationship building and ‘serial users’. Second, these context and role attributes restrict PALS to ‘repair and maintenance’, ensuring that established systems work correctly. While PALS sit on the bottom rung of a ‘participation ladder’, their contribution is more than tokenistic. However, a processual perspective demonstrates how a fluid, networked, and diversified context isolates PALS structures from management decision-making, constraining their power base, and inhibiting the promotion of substantive change agendas.

Notes: The exoerythrocytic forms of Plasmodium gallinaceum in thin sections of infected tissue cultures have been examined with the electron microscope. It was seen that important changes occur in the fine structure of the parasite during the various phases of the cycle. The cytoplasm of the merozoites at the beginning and at the end of each cycle shows a great electron density due to a fine granulation. Larger granules are found at one pole of the parasite. The merozoites have a large nucleus in the center, and an oval body of great electron density at one pole, the significance of which is unknown. Short canaliculi can also be seen in the cytoplasm, but no mitochondria have been found. The cytoplasm of the schizonts shows a low electron density. It contains small particles scattered irregularly throughout its whole mass. The nuclei are not well defined; the oval body observed in the merozoites apparently has disappeared. Short canaliculi are present everywhere; however, mitochondria could not be identified with certainty. In the final phase of the cycle, in the rosette formations, the cytoplasm assumes again the fine granular structure. The future merozoites are grouped around a cytoplasmic core, with which they are directly connected. The whole segmenter is situated in a vacuole formation. In cross sections of the merozoites an opening in the central pole has been observed.

Notes: In order to study the blepharoplast-kinetoplast region in the adult form of Schizotrypanum cruzi thin sections of this form, obtained in tissue cultures, have been examined with the electron microscope. It has been seen that the kinetoplast is contained in a large spherical, vacuole-like space, in hich its osmiophilic mass is more dispersed than in the leishmania and crithidia forms, where it is contained in a rectangular, almost linear space. The basal body of the flagellum has been found at the margin of the vacuole, although separated from it. A group of striae in parallel array has been found with regularity in all the trypanosome forms, similar to the structures of the parabasal body in other protozoa, or to the Golgi apparatus of metazoan cells. The significance of this structure for the parasite is discussed.

Notes: [Auszug] A second group of proteins was also found which possessed a mobility on filter paper similar to, but not identical with, that of albumin. They migrate at the same rate as the slow portion of the albumin and in starch gel can be separated from albumin only in a discontinuous system of buffers. These ...

Notes: The microbial community composition and activity was investigated in aggregates from a lab-scale bioreactor, in which nitrification, denitrification and phosphorus removal occurred simultaneously. The biomass was highly enriched for polyphosphate accumulating organisms facilitating complete removal of phosphorus from the bulk liquid; however, some inorganic nitrogen still remained at the end of the reactor cycle. This was ascribed to incomplete coupling of nitrification and denitrification causing 〈inlineGraphic alt="inline image" href="urn:x-wiley:01686496:FEM329:FEM_329_mu1" location="equation/FEM_329_mu1.gif"/〉 accumulation. After 2 h of aeration, denitrification was dependent on the activity of nitrifying bacteria facilitating the formation of anoxic zones in the aggregates; hence, denitrification could not occur without simultaneous nitrification towards the end of the reactor cycle. Nitrous oxide was identified as a product of denitrification, when based on stored PHA as carbon source. This observation is of critical importance to the outlook of applying PHA-driven denitrification in activated sludge processes.

Notes: [Auszug] Post-transcriptional mechanisms for regulating gene expression, including intracellular transport and localization of mRNAs, control of mRNA translation, and mRNA decay play widespread roles in development and differentiation. By targeting transcripts to particular regions within cells, mRNA ...
