    Notes: Research evidence suggests that UK consumers are facing significant problems with goods and services and are in need of information and advice to avoid or redress such situations. Consumers are not always aware of their rights nor where they can access consumer advice services. In 2000, the Department of Trade and Industry launched the Consumer Support Network (CSN) programme in Great Britain to improve consumer access to expert, accurate and timely advice. One challenge faced by these Networks and many other agencies is to assess the needs of consumers for consumer information and advice services. A needs assessment is required as a key element in the effective planning and development of services in each Network at a local level. The focus of the needs assessment at the local level is to encourage Networks to consider suitable solutions to meet the needs of people in their communities. This paper provides a review of the development of Consumer Support Networks in Great Britain and discusses the importance of needs assessment to service providers such as CSNs and other agencies. It reveals the complexity associated with conducting effective needs assessments including the various aspects of needs, consumer segmentation and characteristics of consumer information and advice. Further research is being carried out at Queen Margaret University College, UK, with a view to the development of a scientific model for the assessment of need for consumer information and advice services.

    Notes: Purpose - Quality has an established history in health care. Audit, as a means of quality assessment, is well understood and the existing literature has identified links between audit and research processes. This paper reviews the relationships between audit and research processes, highlighting how audit can be improved through the principles and practice of social research. Design/methodology/approach - The review begins by defining the audit process. It goes on to explore salient relationships between clinical audit and research, grouped into the following broad themes: ethical considerations, highlighting responsibilities towards others and the need for ethical review for audit; asking questions and using appropriate methods, emphasising transparency in audit methods; conceptual issues, including identifying problematic concepts, such as "satisfaction", and the importance of reflexivity within audit; emphasising research in context, highlighting the benefits of vignettes and action research; complementary methods, demonstrating improvements for the quality of findings; and training and multidisciplinary working, suggesting the need for closer relationships between researchers and clinical practitioners. Findings - Audit processes cannot be considered research. Both audit and research processes serve distinct purposes. Originality/value - Attention to the principles of research when conducting audit are necessary to improve the quality of audit and, in turn, the quality of health care.

    Notes: Purpose - To describe orthopaedic surgical site infection (SSI) surveillance models at two English pilot sites, and to review their effectiveness and integration into clinical governance. Design/methodology/approach - The different organisational models for orthopaedic SSI at two Trusts were examined and assessed. Findings - Both sites recognised that regular feedback to clinical staff and clinical ownership are important determinants of success, and this was addressed by both models. Each site appointed a surveillance coordinator within the infection control service to oversee the programme, but tasked data collection to different staff groups directly involved with the care of orthopaedic patients. Feedback programmes to Clinical Governance Committees, clinical staff and managers were developed, reinforcing surveillance of SSI as a core component of surgical risk management and quality assurance, and an integral part of clinical governance. The pilots demonstrated the importance of a dedicated surveillance coordinator. Practical implications - Infection following joint replacement surgery is associated with high morbidity and financial costs. In 2004 surveillance of orthopaedic SSI became mandatory in England. A description and assessment of these pilot sites will be of practical value to Trusts that must now implement SSI surveillance. Originality/value - SSI surveillance is a corner-stone of risk management and quality clinical care, yet little has been published on organisational frameworks needed for implementation, particularly in the context of clinical governance. This paper addresses these issues in describing and assessing the models at two English pilot sites.

    Notes: Purpose - There is the potential to improve the competitive performance of small to medium-sized companies (SMEs) particularly in the UK clothing and textile industry, a sector of the economy that has had little exposure to activity-based costing and activity-based management (ABC/ABM). Design/methodology/approach - A review of the current literature relating to ABC/ABM was made, with reference to its poor take up amongst SMEs and those in the clothing and textile manufacturing sector particularly. A case study was undertaken to test the theories and assumptions in the context of SMEs in the clothing and textile industry. Findings - The case study showed that there are opportunities to improve the profitability of SMEs if the findings were transposed to other similar businesses willing to invest the time and effort into setting up an ABC/ABM system. Research limitations/implications - There is the opportunity for further research in other areas of business activity in the fashion industry. Practical implications - This is a practical application of a financial management tool that would be useful to academia, managers in SMEs in the clothing and textile industry, government planners looking for ways to increase profitability for UK firms. Originality/value - The paper takes an existing well-known financial tool and examines its use in an area of the economy with little or no previous exposure to its benefits.
