Notes: Abstract A model for the human eye-movement mechanism is derived. The derivation is based on a literature search directed toward identifying and mathematically describing each component through physiological and anatomical considerations. It is felt that although certain parameter values may not be exactly correct (for the data were taken from a wide variety of animals), we can place a great deal of confidence in the configuration.

Description / Table of Contents: Summary The author investigates the principal asymptotic expansion of the measure of approximation of particular singular integrals having a non-negative kernel with respect to the approximation of continuous, 2π-periodic functions belonging to theLipschitz classes Lip 2 * 1 (or Lip1 1) and Lip 2 * 2. A simple connection between the measure of approximation of a singular integral and the moments of the corresponding kernel enables one to calculate these expansions in an elementary way using the associated convergence factors. Thereby a more precise comparison of the quality of approximation by various kernels is possible. In particular the first generalized kernel ofJackson andFejér's kernel are considered.

Notes: Abstract The spectral emissivity of titanium has been measured over a temperature range from 1100 °K to approximately the melting point. Discrepancies in the data as reported by several authors are discussed with respect to the surface conditions of the metal investigated.

Notes: Summary In the cells of the zona fasciculata of intact adult rats lysosomes can be found in medium amounts, measuring 0.2–0.4 μ in diameter. After treatment with ACTH, the lysosomes in the zona fasciculata of the intact animals increase in number and size, and lysosome-lipid conglomerates are formed. In hypophysectomized animals, the lysosomes in the zona fasciculata decrease in number and size in proportion to the time elapsed. Treatment with ACTH given 2 to 4 weeks after hypophysectomy, resulted in the increase in number and size of the lysosomes. Under such circumstances lysosomes appear in conspicuously large numbers around lipid droplets, which frequently coalesce with them. The possible role of lysosomes is discussed.

Notes: Summary The histological and histochemical changes taking place in expiants and outgrowing cells of the human foetal adrenals and hypophyses have been studied on the 5th, 10th, 20th, and 28th day of the culture period. In the outgrowth from adrenals, both the epithelial-type and the fibroblast-type cells contain 3β-ol steroid dehydrogenase activity. The cells growing out from hypophyseal expiants appear to be morphologically undifferentiated. Expiants contain differentiated cells in the first 10 to 13 days of the culture period.

Notes: Summary Influenced by a chain of mechanisms the time course of incorporated radioactive alkaline earths in bone is determined by the slowest link. This is given by the exchange of the anorganic crystals of bone with the surrounding solution. Using a suspension of hydroxyapatite crystals there is tried to explain the power function as a mathematical description of retention of alkaline earths in bone in physical terms. It results from superimposing first order reactions caused by a distribution of binding energies of the ions to the crystal surface.

Notes: Summary The system hydroxyapatite crystals in a proper solution, in a way, represents anin vitro analogue to metabolism of alkaline earths in bone. Experiments are described to find differencies in the behaviour of Ca, Sr, Ba and Ra to synthetic hydroxyapatite crystals. Synthesizing the crystals the discrimination ratios of Ca to Sr, Ba and Ra were measured. Furthermore the exchange of alkaline earths between preformed crystals and a proper solution was studied over a period of 1000 h. The discrimination ratios grow larger with increasing ionic radius in the order Sr, Ba, Ra. While Sr can replace Ca ions also in the interior of the crystals, Ba and Ra are limited to crystal surface. With respect to the discrimination of bone it must be concluded that further processes participate.
