Summary For the procedures and surface treatment of steel the quality of the surface is always of great importance. The study of effects and reactions on surfaces and the clearing of causes of faults during these processes represent newer problems for the analytical chemist in the steel industry. In this paper some examples are given in order to demonstrate that such microanalytical problems can be solved in many cases by the use of spectrographic, X-ray fluorescence, and coulometric methods. The use of the electron microprobe is not always possible as to the requirements of the surface of the samples. By the application of IR spectroscopy it is possible to get in special cases additional information.

Zusammenfassung Bei den Verfahren zur Weiterverarbeitung und Oberflächenbehandlung von Stahl spielt die Güte der Oberfläche naturgemäß eine entscheidende Rolle. Das Studium von Reaktionen an Oberflächen, die Untersuchung von Oberflächeneffekten und die Aufklärung von Störungsursachen im Ablauf dieser Verfahrensschritte stellen neuere Aufgaben des in der Stahlindustrie tätigen Chemikers und Analytikers dar. An einigen Beispielen wird gezeigt, daß in vielen Fällen mit Hilfe von spektrographischen, röntgenfluoreszenzanalytischen und coulometrischen Verfahren bei entsprechender Arbeitstechnik derartige mikroanalytische Probleme gelöst werden können. Der Einsatz der Elektronenstrahl-Mikroanalyse ist wegen der hierbei an die Probenoberfläche zu stellenden Anforderungen nicht immer möglich. Durch die Anwendung der IR-Spektroskopie können oft zusätzliche Informationen gewonnen werden.
