Description: Auf Empfehlung der UNESCO sollen während der Internationalen Hydrologischen Dekade (IHD) sämtliche Süßwasservorkommen der Welt erfaßt werden.

Description: Based on previous results obtained from observations and linear wave theory analysis, the hypothesis that large-scale patterns can generate extreme cold events in southeast South America through the propagation of remotely excited Rossby waves was already suggested. This work will confirm these findings and extend their analysis through a series of numerical experiments using a primitive equation model where waves are excited by a thermal forcing situated in positions chosen according to observed convection anomalies over the equatorial region. The basic state used for these experiments is a composite of austral winters with maximum and minimum frequency of occurrence of generalized frosts that can affect a large area known as the Wet Pampas located in the central and eastern part of Argentina. The results suggest that stationary Rossby waves may be one important mechanism linking anomalous tropical convection with the extreme cold events in the Wet Pampas. The combination of tropical convection and a specific basic state can generate the right environment to guide the Rossby waves trigged by the tropical forcing towards South America. Depending on the phase of the waves entering the South American continent, they can favour the advection of anomalous wind at low levels from the south carrying cold and dry air over the whole southern extreme of the continent, producing a generalized frost in the Wet Pampa region. On the other hand, when a basic state based on the composites of minimum frosts is used, an anomalous anticyclone over the southern part of the continent generates a circulation with a south-southeast wind which brings maritime air and therefore humidity over the Wet Pampas region, creating negative temperature anomalies only over the northeastern part of the region. Under these conditions even if frosts occur they would not be generalized, as observed for the other basic state with maximum frequency of occurrence of generalized frosts.

Description: The present paper compares three different kinds of semiconductor gas sensing materials: metal oxides (MOX), hydrogen-terminated diamond (HD), and hydrogenated amorphous silicon (a-Si:H). Whereas in MOX materials oxygen is the chemically reactive surface species, HD and a-Si:H are covalently bonded semiconductors with hydrogenterminated surfaces. We demonstrate that these dissimilar semiconductor materials exhibit the same kind of low-temperature gas response. This low-temperature response-mechanism is mediated by a thin layer of adsorbed water with the semiconductor materials themselves acting as pH sensors. In this adsorbate-limited state the gas sensitivity is limited to molecular species that can easily dissolve in and subsequently undergo electrolytic dissociation. At higher temperatures, where a closed layer of adsorbed water can no longer exist, the gas response is limited by direct molecule-semiconductor interactions. In this latter mode of operation, MOX gas sensors respond to adsorbed gases according to their different oxidising or reducing properties. Hydrogenated amorphous silicon (a-Si:H), on the other hand, exhibits a significantly different cross sensitivity profile, revealing that gas-surface interactions may largely be restricted to analyte molecules with lone-pair and electron-deficient three-centre orbitals.

Notes: [Auszug] THERE is quite a controversy in the literature as to the growth activity of certain naturally occurring phenolic acids. While Vendrig and Buffel1'2 have stated that caffeie acid may be a very important growth substance, there is another possibility, that the phenols may act in vivo as inhibitors or ...

Notes: [Auszug] The physical basis of this method is not yet understood and many authors have tried various interpretations25. By spraying single droplets of a phosphotungstate solution on to a specimen already prepared in the usual way itbecame possible to compare the brightness of embedded and free-lying ...

Notes: [Auszug] IN my opinion the suggestion that the carbon dioxide in Lake Kivu is of juvenile origin, whereas the methane is biogenic, is unacceptable on the ground that the concentration of the latter within the neighbouring Lakes Tanganyika and Nyasa is some 5-6 orders of magnitude lower (see Table 1 of ...

Notes: [Auszug] THE considerable number and variety of microscopical objects within the Orgueil and several other carbonaceous stones were interpreted by some authors1 o2 as of likely organic origin. These conclusions have been contested8 and critically discussed4'5. The aim of the present article is to attempt ...
