Notes: Summary The effects of a partially purified aqueous extract ofSolanum malacoxylon (SM) leaves and of an SM extract incubated with ruminal fluid (RF) prior to administration on intestinal phosphate and calcium absorption in rachitic rats were compared with 1α, 25-dihydroxy-vitamin D3[1α,25-(OH)2-D3] using a duodenal loop in situ method. The time course responses elicited by both extracts were qualitatively similar to that of 1α, 25-(OH)2-D3. However, a single dose of SMRF was significantly more effective in stimulating32P absorption than an equivalent dose of SM. Part of this difference can be accounted for by incomplete saturation of the phosphate transport system with the level of SM employed. Treatment with rumen potentiated the effects of SM on45Ca absorption to a lesser extent. Extraction of SMRF with nonpolar organic solvents and purification of the lipid extract by chromatography on Silica Gel G thin-layer plates and on Sephadex LH-20 columns yield two fractions which promote intestinal32P absorption. The bioactive fraction eluting first from the Sephadex LH-20 column migrates similarly as 1α,25-(OH)2-D3. The greater effectiveness of SMRF extracts on intestinal phosphate and calcium absorption may be tentatively attributed to the release of 1α,25-(OH)2-D3 from the corresponding glycoside, shown previously to be present in SM, and to steroid modification during incubation with rumen.

Notes: Abstract The dislocation substructures in olivine from coarse-grained peridotite xenoliths in kimberlites from the Lesotho region have been determined. The [100] dislocations may be located in simple (100) tilt boundaries while the density of free or individual [100] dislocations is 106/cm2 or less. The [001] dislocations form (010) twist arrays or more complex (100) subboundaries with the [100] dislocations; the density of free [001] dislocations increases to 8 × 108/cm2 in those grains in which tangles are observed. The simple (100) subboundaries are considered to result from a high temperature, slow strain-rate deformation (creep-like process) while the more complex subboundaries composed of [100] and [001] dislocations, as well as the high density of [001] dislocations, indicate faster strain rates and/or lower deformation temperatures than the creep deformation. These two broad phases of deformation have been interpreted as an early stage of mantle-type flow followed by deformation during or subsequent to the emplacement of the kimberlite.

Notes: Summary Light and scanning electron microscopic observations were made on methyl-methacrylate corrosion casts of the blood vessels in the gills of channel catfish (Ictalurus punctatus). The vasculature of the gill filament can be divided into three distinct pathways: 1. the well-known respiratory circulation which includes the afferent filamental artery (AF), afferent lamellar arteriole (AL), lamella (L), efferent lamellar arteriole (EL) and efferent filamental artery (EF), 2. a nutritive pathway from the EF through small nutritive capillaries (NC) and into one of several filamental veins (FV), and 3. an interlamellar circulation in which small prelamellar arterio-venous anastomoses (PAVA) connect the AL into a series of organized vascular spaces (interlamellar vessels, ILV's) that underlie the interlamellar filamental epithelium. Several sinuslike spaces associated with AF, EF and the filamental cartilagenous support were also observed. The physiological significance of these vascular pathways is discussed.

Notes: Abstract Three variants of the classical conjugate-gradient method are presented. Two of these variants are based upon a nonlinear function of a quadratic form. A restarting procedure due to Powell, and based upon some earlier work of Beale, is discussed and incorporated into two of the variants. Results of applying the four algorithms to a set of benchmark problems are included, and some tentative conclusions about the relative merits of the four schemes are presented.

Notes: Abstract LetU be an open subset of a complex locally convex spaceE, andH(U) the space of holomorphic functions fromU toC. If the dualE′ ofE is nuclear with respect to the topology generated by the absolutely convex compact subsets ofE, then it is shown thatH(U) endowed with the compact open topology is a nuclear space. In particular, ifE is the strong dual of a Fréchet nuclear space, thenH(U) is a Fréchet nuclear space.

Notes: Abstract A conjugate-gradient optimization method which is invariant to nonlinear scaling of a quadratic form is introduced. The technique has the property that the search directions generated are identical to those produced by the classical Fletcher-Reeves algorithm applied to the quadratic form. The approach enables certain nonquadratic functions to be minimized in a finite number of steps. Several examples which illustrate the efficacy of the method are included.
