Description / Table of Contents: Dinuclear Complexes with Chlorodimethylarsine LigandsFrom the hexacarbonyl complexes of chromium, molybdenum, and tungsten via the norbornadiene complexes the compounds cis-M(CO)4[As(CH3)2Cl]2 (1, M = Cr, Mo, W) are formed in good yields. These react with equimolar amounts of carbonylmetalates to give arsenic-bridged dinuclear complexes M′ — As(CH3)2 — M(CO)4 — As(CH3)2Cl (M′ = Mo(CO)3C5H5, W(CO)3C5H5, Mn(CO)5, Re(CO)5, Co(CO)4), which still bear the reactive chlorodimethylarsine ligands. The use of these for further syntheses is demonstrated by the preparation of the heterotrinuclear complex (CO)5Mn — As(CH3)2 — Cr(CO)4 — As(CH3)2 — Re(CO)5.
As(CH3)2 — Cr(CO)4 — As(CH3)2 — Re(CO)5 demonstriert.

Notes: A method for slit-hight corrections is described, in which the experimental X-ray small angle scattering curve is represented by a cubic spline function. This method is applied on the theoretical scattering curve of spherical particles with homogenious electron-density and on scattering curves of poly(hexamethylene adipate).

Notes: Changes of the solvation sphere of N,N′-dibenzoyl-m-phenlyenediamine (as a model substance for aromatic polyamides) in N,N′-dimethylacetamide caused by electrolytes such as LiCl, LiBr or BeCl2 were studied by 13C NMR chemical shift measurements. The observed variations of the chemical shift data were interpreted by a stronger interaction of the solvent molecules with the carbonamide group. The relation of the carbonyl and the amide group interaction with the solvent or the solvated cations depends on the kind of electrolyte. It is not possible to correlate the obtained results with the influence of these electrolytes upon the molecular weight of the aromatic polyamides prepared in N,N′-dimethylacetamide. Therefore some possible explanations are discussed.

Description / Table of Contents: By direct pyrolysis of commercial polyethyleneterephthalate in the mass spectrometer a content of about 1% of the cyclic trimer ethyleneterephthalate is indicated at temperatures below thermal degradation of the polymer. The comparison with EI- and FD-mass spectra of the authentic cyclic trimer allows its identification without previous isolation.

Description / Table of Contents: A computer method for slit-hight corrections is described, in which the experimental X-ray small angle scattering curve is represented by a cubic spline function. This method is applied on the theoretical scattering-curve of spherical particles with homogeneous electron-density and on scattering-curves of polyhexamethyleneadipate and an aliphatic polyesteramide. For the polyester and the polyesteramide long periods of 150 Å and 118 Å, respectively, were found. By means of this and other physical results considerations of the structure of these materials are given.

Notes: The degradation of plastics by ultraviolet energy and the use of protective ultraviolet absorbers to improve stability necessitate studies along several lines. These include (a) the measurement of the ultraviolet spectral energy distribution of sunlight and of the indoor accelerated test sources, (b) the measurement of the extent of degradation as a function of the wavelength of the incident radiation, (c) an estimate of the absorbing effectiveness of the added protective agents, and (d) the stability of the protective ultraviolet absorbers themselves.

Notes: The effectiveness of the ultraviolet absorbers in protecting organic coatings exposed to an extraterrestrial environment from photochemical degradation was studied for the commercially available absorbers and certain errocene derivatives. The change in solar absorptivity of the coatings was used as a measure of the degradation incurred, these data being obtained from the ultraviolet, visible, and near-infrared absorption spectra of the polymers. Ultraviolet absorbers of the benzophenone and benzotriazole type used for terrestrial applications were found to be considerably less effective in a space environment. This was attributed to the strong ultraviolet absorption of the polymers at the shorter wavelengths, which competes with the absorber for the incident radiation. Certain benzoyl-substituted ferrocene compounds were found to be extremely effective in protecting many types of polymeric coatings. The benzoylferrocenes are highly colored materials (red to orange) whose absorbing properties are extremely stable to ultraviolet radiation.

Notes: Compounds which are effective in protecting materials from terrestial ultraviolet radiation may, in a high vacuum environment, suffer loss both by evaporation and by photochemical degradation from the shorter wavelength ultraviolet radiation. The rates of evaporation from a free surface in a high vacuum of the commercially available protective ultraviolet absorbers have been measured as a function of temperature. Vapor pressures of the solid absorbers were calculated from the rate of evaporation data. The equilibrium vapor pressures of the liquid absorbers were determined by a direct vapor spectrophotometric method. Absorbers containing more than one hydroxy group were found to be considerably less volatile than the monohydroxy compounds, probably because of intermolecular hydrogen bonding of the former.

Notes: The vapor pressure of melamine was measured in the temperature range of 144-341°C. by the dynamic method, ultraviolet spectrophotometry being used to determine the amounts transferred at the lower vapor pressures. Nitrogen and ammonia were used as carrier gases. The vapor pressures are given by the expression log P = 12.52 - (6440/T). The average heat of sublimation was found to be 29 ± 1 kcal./mole.
