Notes: Summary In toads,Bufo bufo L., ACTH (1 I.U.) causes a retardation of extinction compared with Ringer administration irrespective of whether the animals have received the ACTH injection before or at the end of acquisition. Treatment with ACTH 20 min prior to acquisition lowers the starting activity. Therefore, habituation is completed earlier than in Ringer controls. The effect of ACTH treatment is stimulus-specific, as toads habituated to a wormlike stripe show normal turning activity to a triangle even under the influence of ACTH. The conformity of these results with the ACTH effect on complex learning behaviour especially in rats may indicate an underlying common principle. It is concluded that ACTH and, possibly, related peptides elicite neuronal events which favour learning and memory processes even in lower vertebrates.

Notes: Abstract Radioactive phosphorus was fed to laboratory-reared male pink bolloworms, Pectinophora gossypiella (Saunders), for studies of dispersal and mating in the field. Released moths either irradiated with 20 Krad or unirradiated, were found predominantly within a few hundred meters of the release points. Prior to formation of a plant canopy, daytime-resting places of moths were soil crevices at the bases of the plants. Later, when a protective plant canopy had formed, about half of the moths took resting places in the lower canopy, many in withered blooms. Little mating occurred between released males and native females, probably due to the great preponderance of native males in the test area. The technique of autoradiography of native females to determine mating with released labeled males was simple and effective.

Notes: Abstract Organic and metal-organic electron-transfer solids can be classified by crystal structure, those known to date being divided intohomosoric, in which identical molecules stack infinitely, heterosoric, in which different molecules stack alternately, andnonsoric, non-stacked types. Only homosoric solids have high electrical conductivity.

Notes: Abstract Recurrent power series methods are particularly applicable to problems in celestial mechanics since the Taylor coefficients may be expressed by recurrence relations. However, as the number of Taylor coefficients increases as is often necessary because of accuracy requirements, the computing time grows prohibitively large. In order to avoid this unfavorable situation, Dr E. Fehlberg introduced in 1960 Runge-Kutta methods that use the firstm Taylor coefficients obtained by recursive relations, or some other technique. Optimalm-fold Runge-Kutta methods are introduced. Embedded methods of order (m+3)[m+4] and (m+4)[m+5] are presented which have coefficients that produce minimum local truncation errors for the higher order pair of solutions of the method, as well as providing a near maximum absolute stability region. It is emphasized that the methods are formulated such that the higher order pair of solutions is to be utilized. These optimal methods are compared to the existingm-fold methods for several test problems. The numerical comparisons show that the optimal methods are more efficient. It is stressed that these optimal methods are particularly efficient whenm is small.

Notes: Abstract The diffraction of electromagnetic cm-waves passing by the straight edge of a metal screen was experimentally investigated. The diffraction which depends on the polarisation of the waves and the thickness of the screen was measured within a range of about 20 wavelengths around the edge of the screen. The results agree with the theory ofSommerfeld and the investigations ofFranz andDeppermann. The intensity function of the waves near the edge of the screen shadow depends — according to our measurements — on the curvature of the screen edge. This agrees with the theoretical postulation ofArtmann: if the radius of the screen edge isa〉λ the diffraction fringes appearing around the shadow of the screen edge are shifted towards the light area whenσ-polarized radiation is used. When usingπ-polarized radiation a shift towards the shadow area ist observed.

Notes: Abstract The equilibrium betweenF- andM-center concentration in KCl after X-irradiation at temperatures between 77 °K and 298 °K has been studied. At low temperatures (〈200 °K) onlyF-centers which are formed statistically as nearest neighbours give aM-center. At higher temperaturesF-centers within a certain sphere of interaction with a radiusr formM-centers. The temperature dependance of this radiusr has been evaluated. The equilibrium constantK depends on the temperature in the form K=K0exp(-Q/kT). The activation energy was determined to be Q=(0.5±0.1) eV.

Notes: Abstract A description of preparation for samples of niobium nitride without and with admixtures of titanium, zirconium and tantalum by diffusion of nitrogen under pressure into niobium wires without and with admixtures of titanium, zirconium and tantalum respectively, is given. For samples of pure niobium nitride with different compositions the influence of the nitrogen content on the transition temperature to superconductivity has been investigated with the result of a transition temperature not exceeding 16.5 °K even for the stoichiometric composition NbN. This is in contrary to other authors. For diffusion wires of the systems (Nb-Ti)N x , (Nb-Zr)N x and (Nb-Ta)N x the critical temperature, lattice parameter and nitrogen content as a function of the admixture of titanium, zirconium and tantalum respectively, are given. For the first time the magnetisation curve of niobium nitride has been measured showing the behaviour of type II superconductors. Concerning the kinetics of formation of niobium nitride by diffusion the nitrogen content is increasing for constant nitrogen pressure with raising temperature of diffusion, but is decreasing in the high temperature region.

Notes: Abstract The transport coefficients of a neutrino-antineutrino mixture are calculated on the basis of the neutral current weak interaction. From the values obtained it is concluded that matter and antimatter could separate in the universe during the primordial lepton era.
