Beschreibung / Inhaltsverzeichnis: Dynamics of Ice Sheets and Glaciers presents an introduction to the dynamics and thermodynamics of flowing ice masses on Earth. Based on an outline of general continuum mechanics, the different initial-boundary-value problems for the flow of ice sheets, ice shelves, ice caps and glaciers are systematically derived. Special emphasis is put on developing hierarchies of approximations for the different systems, and suitable numerical solution techniques are discussed. A separate chapter is devoted to glacial isostasy. The book is appropriate for graduate courses in glaciology, cryospheric sciences, environmental sciences, geophysics and related fields.

Notizen: Mannose-binding type 1 pili are important virulence factors for the establishment of Escherichia coli urinary tract infections (UTIs). These infections are initiated by adhesion of uropathogenic E. coli to uroplakin receptors in the uroepithelium via the FimH adhesin located at the tips of type 1 pili. Blocking of bacterial adhesion is able to prevent infection. Here, we provide for the first time binding data of the molecular events underlying type 1 fimbrial adherence, by crystallographic analyses of the FimH receptor binding domains from a uropathogenic and a K-12 strain, and affinity measurements with mannose, common mono- and disaccharides, and a series of alkyl and aryl mannosides. Our results illustrate that the lectin domain of the FimH adhesin is a stable and functional entity and that an exogenous butyl α- d-mannoside, bound in  the  crystal  structures,  exhibits  a  significantly better affinity for FimH (Kd = 0.15 µM) than mannose (Kd = 2.3 µM). Exploration of the binding affinities of α- d-mannosides with longer alkyl tails revealed affinities up to 5 nM. Aryl mannosides and fructose can also bind with high affinities to the FimH lectin domain, with a 100-fold improvement and 15-fold reduction in affinity, respectively, compared with mannose. Taken together, these relative FimH affinities correlate exceptionally well with the relative concentrations of the same glycans needed for the inhibition of adherence of type 1 piliated E. coli. We foresee that our findings will spark new ideas and initiatives for the development of UTI vaccines and anti-adhesive drugs to prevent anticipated and recurrent UTIs.

Notizen: Marine ash zones from the last interglacial period have been described from cores from the North Atlantic and an ash zone from the middle part of the interglacial has been observed in connection with a major cooling event. Here we present evidence for a coeval ash zone in a terrestrial site on the Faroe Islands. The investigated sediments are correlated with the upper part of oxygen isotope stage 5e and the beginning of stage 5d. The Eemian climatic optimum is represented in the lower part of the sequence close to the first occurrence of the ash zone. A tephra-based correlation suggests that the climatic optimum was synchronous with the marine record from the Norwegian Sea, but several thousand years later than in Eemian sections of west central Europe. However, many questions on the chronological relationship between the Eemian and oxygen isotope stage 5e still remain to be answered.

Notizen: Abstract From a search through the literature 174 close binaries with known absolute dimensions have been sampled. Distinction is made between systems before and after mass exchange. Mass, period and mass ratio distributions and relations of the group of ‘unevolved’ binaries (i.e., prior to mass exchange) are transformed into corresponding distributions and relations of evolved binaries. The transformations are based upon theM 1f=g(M 1f) relation derived from an extended set of published theoretical computations of the evolution of close binaries. From this relation the following characteristics of the system after mass exchange are computed:M 1f,M 2f (andq f),P f. Five different modes of mass transfer were applied for the computation of the values ofP f andM 2f. The variation of the period was calculated using the formalism given by Vanbeverenet al. (1979). The results are compared to the observations of binary systems after mass exchange, and are discussed together with an analysis of the effect of several selection effects present in the distributions. The main conclusion is that, during mass exchange in close binaries, more than 50% of the mass is lost to the system in the process of transfer, removing a large amount of angular momentum.

Notizen: Abstract Recent data on semi-detached systems are compared with general results of close binary computations to determine the origin of Algol-type systems (classical case A and case B results are considered). Both the conservative and the non-conservative mode of mass exchange are investigated. It is found that the assumption of considerable mass loss from the system gives satisfying agreement with the observations. It is also concluded that the calculation of an extensive homogeneous network of case A computations is needed.

Notizen: Abstract Using the definition of four important events in the evolution of Massive Close Binary systems, we define five observable evolutionary phases in the life of a Massive Close Binary system: OB+OB, WR+OB, C+OB, C+WR, and WR+WR. We define and compute a number of observable phenomena for large groups of Massive Close Binaries. For one burst of star formation, we compute the number of systems in different evolutionary phases, and the total mass loss as functions of the time. For continuous star formation, we determine the fraction of WR binary stars, occurring in different phases of massive close binary evolution, and a number of average quantities (mass, mass ratio) of WR binary systems. The results are compared with observations of WR binaries in the Galaxy and in Open Clusters.

Notizen: Abstract A method is given to derive absolute dimensions from data of spectroscopic binary systems, with application to the 7th Catalogue of Spectroscopic Binary Systems of Battenet al. (1978). The different samples of solutions are analysed with regard to existing solutions. Absolute dimensions are given for 62 systems, not included in the tables of Popper (1980), Lacy (1979), and Giannone and Giannuzzi (1974).

Notizen: Abstract The remaining core hydrogen burning lifetime after case B of mass transfer of the secondary (mass gaining) component in a medium mass close binary star is estimated, for mediummass binaries with primaries in the mass range 5M ⊙ to 9M ⊙. From the comparison of this quantity with the helium burning time-scale of the remnant primary a critical mass ratioq c is derived such that for larger values ofq, mass transfer from the secondary towards the primary starts before the latter has evolved into a white dwarf. Consequences for the advanced stages of medium mass binaries are discussed.
