Notes: Hydroxyapatite-based materials have been used for dental and biomedical applications.Newly developed synthesis techniques give cause to a broad field in the study of these materials andindustry demands products with better properties day by day. The purpose of the present work wasto evaluate the mechanical properties of hydroxyapatite-based (HAp-based), organic-inorganiccomposites.HAp-based, organic-inorganic composites were obtained by modified gel casting process andorganic molecules in a gelatin solution.HAp samples of different sizes and shapes were obtained with controlled micro and macro porosityand then were immersed into several gelatin solutions with different concentrations.X-ray powder Diffraction (XRD), Infra Red (IR) Spectroscopy and Scanning Electron Microscopy(SEM) techniques were used to analyze samples before and after gel casting process in order toassure that chemical and physical properties remains the same after this process. IR Spectroscopyand SEM techniques were used to characterize samples after the introduction of organic phase inorder to analyze the final morphology of samples. Mechanical characterization was made incompression mode to samples without and with different concentrations of organic phase in order toestablish the optimum conditions in which the highest compressive strength and Young’s modulusis reached

Notes: The constitutional development of Nigeria which started under the British occupation has been marked by two fundamental principles: the decision to set the political evolution of the country on a federal basis, and the effort, far less successful, to integrate the traditional institutions into a modern political system. This second principle will be the subject of this article, which I hope will also shed some light on the complex relationships between tradition and modernity, and thus show the importance of ‘primordial loyalties’ in political life.

Notes: Summary The compatibility of blends of poly(vinyl acetate) and poly(ethylene oxide) has been studied by rheological and thermo-optical analysis. Results from experiments point to the conclusion that there is extensive mixing between the segments of the two macromolecules in the blend. The interaction between the two polymers is manifested by a decrease in the melting point and a continuous decrease in viscosity with decreasing POE content in the mixture.

Notes: Summary Polyethers from 1,4-bis(chloromethylene)-2,5-dimethoxybenzene and 4,4′-biphenol were obtained by phase transfer catalysis, using different catalysts and solvents. The molecular weights and yields were determined, showing a solvent effect and a influence of the catalysts used.

Notes: Carbon nanotubes could avoid the crack propagation and enhance the toughness of theceramic material used for prostheses applications. So nanozirconia partially coated carbonnanotubes have been obtained via hydrothermal synthesis of zirconia nanoparticles in presence ofmultiwall carbon nanotubes. The as covered nanotubes should have a better wettability in theceramic matrix and improve the dispersion of the CNTs in the nanocomposite, which results in anew ceramic biomaterial with a longer lifetime and better reliability. The obtained product has beenstructurally characterized by several techniques such as FTIR, XRD, SEM, AFM, EELS, XPS andTGA. The citotoxicity of the sintered product was studied by the change in the pH and ICP-AES inin-vitro biocompatibility tests

Notes: A comparative study on the Fe-reducing ability of pure anaerobic strains of Geobactermetallireducens and Bacillus infernus was investigated using different sources of Fe(III). Batchtests were carried out in aqueous solutions containing a reducing agent (lactate or formate) and at aconstant temperature of 37ºC and 50ºC respectively. The formation of biogenic compounds ofFe(II) was determined using XRD and SEM-EDX techniques. The bioreduction of magnetite was not affected by the type of bacterial strain used. The kineticsof the process, initially very fast, stopped rapidly for both types of microorganisms. Vivianite(Fe3(PO4)2.8H2O) was detected as the main biogenic compound formed during the bioreductionprocess

Notes: Sugar-beet pectin gels are a novel material with applications in heavy and precious metalremoval and biomass immobilization which are similar to those of alginate. This paper presents theexperimental results of the kinetics of Pb(II) and Au(III) batch removal with these gels, with andwithout immobilized biomass of the brown algae Fucus vesiculosus. The evolution of the metalconcentration, solution pH and Ca2+ liberation was determined. The biomass was characterizedbefore and after the metal removal using SEM-EDX, FESEM, FETEM, XRD and FTIR techniques. The Pb(II) removal followed a typical biosorption kinetics with a final equilibrium metalconcentration. The immobilized algae had different biosorptive behaviour than both the originalsugar-beet pectin gels and the free biomass. There was no Au(III) removal with the pectin gelswithout algae. In the case of the immobilized biomass, the Au(III) recovery occurred in two stages, where the biosorption was followed by the reduction of the Au(III) to Au(0) due to the presence ofthe own algae. The Au(0) precipitated preferably on the surface of the algal biomass and in the formof colloidal gold in the solution and entrapped within the pectin gel matrix

Notes: A unified interpretation of super plastic flow (SPF) and cosmic micromechanics inspatially extended single and polycrystalline systems (SESPS) allows determined that the nature ofthe hyperbolic granular flow in SESPS is assisted by the movement of dislocations as the pattern ofthe inner dimension flow. Consequently in this work a mathematical model related with relativisticcosmology and quantum mechanics is used in order to obtain the activation energy for super plasticflow in SESPS. This correspondence law between SPF and cosmic micromechanics is important inthe light of recent cosmological theories of the existence of dark matter and dark energy in thecosmic structure, because in this new interpretation of the universe the planets, stars, galaxies, clusters of galaxies, etc., are considered as precipitates on dislocations in the cosmic structure, which is formed in a nature way by the dark matter and dark energy, in a similar form ofprecipitates on dislocations in a SESPS of metals. Physically in this context the expansion processof the universe is highly dependent upon the volume fraction, size and distribution of precipitates ondislocations in the cosmic structure. Therefore, in this work the main results obtained in cosmicmicromechanics and cosmic macromechanics are related with the Max Planck’s scale (MPE) andEdwin Hubble’s scale (EHS) respectively

Notes: Supersaturated solid solutions of Cu-44.5at.%Ni-22.5at.%Fe and Cu-37at.%Ni-6at.%Cr alloy wereproduced by ball milling of a pure chemical elemental mixture for 1080 ks. Two fcc supersaturatedsolid solutions with a grain size of about 20 and 50 nm, respectively, were obtained after milling. These alloys were subsequently aged at temperatures between 800 and 1003 K for different times. The aging promoted the phase decomposition of the supersaturated solid solution into a mixture ofCu-rich and Ni- phases in both the aged MA alloy powders. The growth kinetics of the modulationwavelength was determined from the X-ray diffraction results and followed the Lifshitz-Slyozov-Wagner theory for a diffusion-controlled coarsening in the mechanically-alloyed Cu-Ni-Fe alloyafter aging. However, the sidebands intensity seems to be very low and overlapped with the peakscorresponding to the Cu-rich phase in the aged mechanically-alloyed Cu-Ni-Cr alloy. The growthkinetics of composition modulation wavelength for the aged MA Cu-Ni-Fe alloy was faster at 803and 898 K than that for the same alloy composition obtained by a conventional processing and thenaged at the same temperatures
