Notes: It is evidenced that charge-transfer interaction of electron-donor and acceptor groups incorporated in polymer chains improves substantially the rheological properties, mainly by extending the rubber plateau to higher temperatures and lower frequencies, respectively. The effect is attributed to thermoreversible network formation and can be used to increase the stability of incompatible polymer blends at least from the viscoelastic point of view.

Notes: Investigations by pyrolysis-gas chromatography (P-GC) and by thermogravimetry (TG) on styrene-isoprene two-block copolymers demonstrated that the thermal behaviour of these copolymers is influenced mainly by the microstructure of the polyisoprene (PI) block. Generally, the PI blocks with a higher content of vinylic 1,2-microstructures show a lower content of volatile products in P-GC and a slower weight loss in TG, suggesting an apparent higher thermostability. All copolymers show in P-GC the main products of the corresponding homopolymers in an amount directly proportional to the respective content of the components in the copolymers. All results suggest an independent degradation of the two different blocks of styrene-isoprene block copolymers.

Notes: A series of novel polyphenylquinoxalines containing naphthalimide structures in the chain were prepared by reacting 3,3′-diaminobenzidine, 3,3′,4,4′-tetraaminodiphenyl ether and 3,3′,4,4′-tetraaminodiphenyl sulfone with the two new monomers of N,N′-bis(4-benzoylcarbonylphenyl)-4,4′-(1,3-phenylenedioxy)-di-1,8-naphthalenedicarboximide (3a) and N,N′-bis(4-benzoylcarbonylphenyl)-4,4′-[isopropylidenebis(1,4-phenyleneoxy)]-di-1,8-naphthalenedicarboximide (3b). The obtained polymers exhibit high decomposition temperatures, their Tg values being, however, below 300°C. Their solubility in common solvents, e.g. chloroform, is excellent, but their molecular weight is low. Higher molecular weight products were obtained by copolymerization of 3a, b with N,N′-bis(4-benzoylcarbonylphenyl)-1,8 : 4,5-naphthalenetetracarboxdiimide (3c) yielding films and fibers with good mechanical properties.

Description / Table of Contents: Material Response in Inertia Welding of SuperalloysThe paper summarizes by means of investigation results on the forged alloy Waspaloy how the strength of inertia bonds is generated by the material response with respect to the precipitating phase Ni3Al.Metallography, TEM-results and computer calculations indicate which kind of precipitation can be expected and that the influence of heat input during welding can be compensated by an appropriate post weld heat treatment.Different material response is found in welded cast and PM-superalloys, where investigations are going on.

Notes: Adsorption of bovine albumin, γ-globulin and fibrinogen from phosphate buffer solution (pH = 7.5) onto several polymer films was studied using the radioiodinated proteins (125I). The kinetics of desorption of the proteinated polymer films in bovine plasma was determined. Contact angle measurements on these same polymers allowed the calculation of dispersive (WAd) and polar (Ip) components of the polymer-protein solution system. Results from these measurements show that the nondispersive-dispersive force balance at the polymer-protein solution interface, expressed by the Ip/WAd ratio, is an important factor for binding of proteins on polymer surfaces. The purity of fibrinogen and the cleaning procedures for the polymer surfaces influence the absolute values of proteins adsorbed on polymer surfaces.
