Notes: A new reactor configuration, the annular bed reactor, is mathematically modeled to assess its capabilities as a CO methanation reactor. The results show that the reactor offers excellent temperature control characteristics and negligible pressure drop, and that it is a promising configuration for this as well as other reaction systems.

Notes: The Isotherm Migration Method of numerically analyzing conduction with phase change is modified to handle surface and external resistances, appearance, and propagation of successive fronts into slabs of composite material of one or more constituents finely dispersed in a matrix, different components transforming at different temperatures. Procedures are developed for selecting temperature intervals between isotherms, initially locating isotherms by means of analytical approximations to the earliest stages, and thereafter inserting and removing isotherms as appropriate, particularly when each component gives rise to a separate front.

Notes: Diffusion coefficients of argon, krypton, xenon, methane, carbon tetrachloride and the tetraalkyltins (methyl through butyl) were measured in methanol, 1-butanol and 1-octanol over the temperature range 298 to 433 K. With temperature-dependent solvent diameters fitted from the tracer diffusivity of one of the solutes, a rough-hard-sphere theory predicts well the observed tracer diffusivity over the solvent density range in which hard-sphere computer simulations are available. The Wilke-Chang correlation predicts diffusion coefficients in the higher alcohols with an average error of 80% and a maximum error of 200%. A correlation of the form Dμp/T = A where p and A depend on solute and solvent size is more successful giving an average error of 7% and a maximum error of 24%.

Notes: A model is presented to describe the behavior of falling film fractionators with evaporation or condensation. Experimental measurements of vapor composition, vapor temperature and wall temperature profiles were made. Close agreement suggests that the model is applicable to both adiabatic and nonadiabatic conditions.

Notes: The Modified Isotherm Migration Method (MIMM) is developed for solving one-dimensional Stefan-type problems of multifront propagation in slabs, cylinders and spheres with a boundary condition of the third kind (radiation-type boundary condition). The method is illustrated for all three geometries with applications to the thawing of ice and to the freezing of a 50-50 dispersion of tetradecane in water, a system in which two freezing fronts propagate simultaneously.

Notes: Water rivulets are produced on inclined flat plates made of high-density polyethylene, Mylar, Plexiglas and acetate film. Conditions are obtained for straight rivulets to begin to meander and for measuring rivulets to cease their unsteadiness. These critical conditions are correlated using a one-dimensional theory of high Reynolds number slender rivulets in which pressure gradients generated by curvature, surface tensionand contact-angle hysteresis balance.

Notes: Surface tensions of several binary mixtures are computed using the gradient theory of inhomogeneous fluids. The interfacial influence parameters are determined from mixing rules and pure fluid experimental tensions. A comparison of the compositional dependence of the predicted and experimental tensions indicates that the best results for nonpolar hydrocarbons are obtained from a geometric mixing rule for the influence parameter. Predicted tensions vs. composition for nonpolar systems are in excellent agreement with experiment, generally lying within 2% of observed data. Predictions are poor for alcohol solutions.

Notes: Flow crystallization experiments which utilized the Instron rheometer in conjunction with convergent dies were conducted for the purpose of producing high-modulus poly(ethylene terephthalate) filaments directly from the melt. A temperature gradient was imposed on the lower extremity of the dies in an attempt to control the site of the fluid-solid phase transformation, and “freeze in” any orientation derived from the elongational flow regime. Comparative studies were made using dies with included angles of 20, 30, and 40°, and extrusion temperatures ranging from 255 to 270°C. Die angle influenced the pressure at which maximum die swell and the onset of extrudate distortion occurred; however, barrel temperature showed little effect on this pressure. The minimum temperature produced by the temperature gradient was the over-riding factor involved with cessation of flow. In each experiment, the fluid-solid phase transformation produced by the temperature was always accompanied by extrudate distortion. Thus, only minimal comparative studies of the extrudates could be performed. In view of the above, it appears that utilizing a temperature gradient, by itself, to “freeze in” preferred orientation within the confines of the die presents difficulties. A modification which combines a temperature gradient with external tension and a rapid after-quench outside the die, now holds appeal for continuing studies.
