    Description: Baroclinic waves in the atmospherics general circulation experiment (AGCE) apparatus by the use of numerical hydrostatic primitive equation models were determined. The calculation is accomplished by using an axisymmetric primitive equation model to compute, for a given set of experimental parameters, a steady state axisymmetric flow and then testing this axisymmetric flow for stability using a linear primitive equation model. Some axisymmetric flows are presented together with preliminary stability calculations.

    Description: Surface wind velocities have been derived from backscatter measurements of the ocean surface made by a satellite-borne, microwave sensor. Comparisons with high-quality surface-based measurements obtained during the Joint Air-Sea Interaction experiment are described. The accuracy of the scatterometer winds at this mid-latitude site, + or 1.6 m/s in speed and + or - 18 deg in direction, for winds between 3 and 16 m/s is within the design specification.

    Description: High-altitude microwave radiometric observations at frequencies near 92 and 183.3 GHz were used to study the potential of retrieving atmospheric water vapor profiles over both land and water. An algorithm based on an extended kalman-Bucy filter was implemented and applied for the water vapor retrieval. The results show great promise in atmospheric water vapor profiling by microwave radiometry heretofore not attainable at lower frequencies.

    Description: Electronic beam steering is described as complex and expensive. The Sunset implementation of electronic steering is described, and it is demonstrated that such systems are cost effective, versatile, and no more complex than fixed beam alternatives, provided three or more beams are needed. The problem of determining accurate meteorological wind components in the presence of spatial variation is considered. A cost comparison of steerable and fixed systems allowing solution of this problem is given. The concepts and relations involved in phase steering are given, followed by the description of the Sunset ST radar steering system. The implications are discussed, references to the competing SAD method are provided, and a recommendation concerning the design of the future Doppler ST/MST systems is made.

    Description: Meteorological data derived from satellites provided an essential component of the FGGE data sets, especially in data sparse regions of the globe. The impact of satellite derived observations on objective analyses and numerical model predictions are investigated. The FGGE data sets and resulting numerical forecasts and the ability to define the available potential energy of the atmosphere, and its relationship to synoptic scale features such as extratropical cyclones are studied.

    Description: The Abarbanel-Gottleib (AG) modification of the Kreiss-Oliger (KO) scheme is applied to a global 1-level shallow water model and the results compared to results obtained using the standard KO scheme. The standard KO scheme consists of the second order leapfrog scheme for time derivatives and fourth order space differencing for spatial derivatives. The AG scheme modifies the KO scheme in a manner similar to that done by Wilson to the multidimensional leapfrog scheme, obtaining a 35-40% improvement of the maximum time step. Application of the AG scheme expands the domain of influence of the KO scheme by including off-axis grid points.

    Description: Transonic viscous-inviscid interaction is considered using the Euler and inverse compressible turbulent boundary-layer equations. Certain improvements in the inverse boundary-layer method are mentioned, along with experiences in using various Runge-Kutta schemes to solve the Euler equations. Numerical conditions imposed on the Euler equations at a surface for viscous-inviscid interaction using the method of equivalent sources are developed, and numerical solutions are presented and compared with experimental data to illustrate essential points.     Description: Total water was measured in the high troposphere and low stratosphere over Panama during ten aircraft flights. The results show that convective storms provide the means of transporting water into the stratosphere. From a consideration of the anvil heights over different areas of the tropical zone, it follows that a negative gradient of water vapor mixing ratio with altitude must exist over most of the lower stratosphere.

    Description: An alternating direction implicit (ADI) method has been applied to a staggered grid for the computation of convection in a highly stratified fluid. Since artificial viscosity is not needed, subtle effects like the onset of convection can be studied. These computations compare well with the 2-D results by Graham (1975) and also agree with standard Boussinesq results when taken to that limit. Good efficiency has been achieved with a time step hundreds of times larger than the stability limit imposed by the explicit treatment of diffusion and the Courant number is not restricted to be below 1. The Navier-Stokes equation contains cross spatial derivatives which are treated explicitly in most ADI schemes. The destabilizing effect of such a practice on a 2-D model system with second-order spatial derivative terms only was analyzed and found to be not excessive.
