Notes: At Makthlawaiya, in the Paraguayan Chaco, the prevalence of Trypanosoma (Schizotrypanum) cruzi infection among both domestic Triatoma infestans and domestic dogs was 38%, and IgG anti-T. cruzi antibody was detected by the quantitative enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) in 80% (105/133) of human sera. Ninety percent (25/28) of T. cruzi strains isolated from both T. infestans and dogs showed heterozygous isoenzyme profiles for glucose phosphate isomerase, phosphoglucomutase and 6-phosphogluconate dehydrogenase. These strains appeared to be closely related to Bolivian zymodeme 2. Three Paraguayan T. cruzi strains showed homozygous isoenzyme profiles, similar to those of major Brazilian zymodemes. It was concluded that T. cruzi strains with heterozygous isoenzyme profiles predominate in domestic transmission cycles in this highly endemic area of the Paraguayan Chaco.

Notes: The trophont stage in the life cycle of Ichthyophthirius multifiliis was studied in the electron microscope. Surface ridges contain up to 24 ridge microtubules, disposed as a ribbon. Kinetosomes show the classic morphology of 9 triplets of microtubules. Associated with each kinetosome is a kinetodesmal fibril, originating in proximity to triplets 5, 6, and 7, and having a 30 nm periodicity; 3 to 5 postciliary microtubules, originating between triplets 8 and 9; and up to 3 transverse microtubules, originating at triplet 4, as well as a parasomal sac. Each cell is partially enclosed by a system of 3 “unit” membranes: the outer limiting membrane, and the outer and inner alveolar membranes. The last two membranes define the alveolar sac. Mucocysts, each with a dense core, are present in large numbers. The contractile vacuole system includes the contractile vacuole, associated tubules and vesicles, injection canals, a discharge canal, and a pore. Microtubules abound in the walls of the contractile vacuole, injection and discharge canals, and in the region of the pores, where both ring and radial microtubular arrangements are noted. The ultrastructure suggests that I. multifiliis is more closely related to Tetrahymena pyriformis than to Paramecium aurelia.

Notes: . The large fresh-water microaerobic amoeba Pelomyxa palustris does not contain mitochondria, but three types of bacterial endosymbionts are always present. Thus, it is of interest in the discussion of the possible origin of mitochondria from primitive prokaryotes. Gas exchanges (O2, CO2) and concentration of endosymbionts were determined in individual amoebae, in which the life cycle stage was noted. Grey type (stationary phase) amoebae had a lower O2 uptake and lower endosymbiont concentration than light type (growth phase) amoebae, and highest O2 uptake was found in centrifugal pieces of light type Pelomyxa, centrifuged in vivo, which contained nearly all of the endosymbionts. In light type amoebae, the respiratory activity was independent of O2 concentration between 1 and 21%, and, when compared on the basis of dry weight and protein, of the same order as that of other free-living protozoa. The R.Q. was slightly higher than 1, indicating that glycolysis does not play a significant role in energy metabolism. It is concluded that P. palustris is fully aerobic, and suggestions are presented as to the role of the endosymbionts in its respiratory metabolism.

Notes: Changes in the population of stem-boring Dipterous larvae (including Oscinella frit) were examined weekly for a year on plots of perennial ryegrass (Lolium perenne cv. S24). The herbage net regrowth rate of these plots and of plots receiving the pesticide, phorate, was also monitored. Herbage net regrowth rates were greatest in April and October. At the same times the differences in net regrowth between treated and untreated plots were greatest, thus indicating the periods of the greatest loss of production due to pest damage to the sward.Populations of stem-boring larvae fell below 100 m−2 for only 4 weeks in the year and were maximal in autumn and early winter. Larval mortality exceeded 50% during the winter period. A correlation was found between larval activity and sward damage.

Notes: Weather damage reduces the value of commercial mungbean. but hard-seededness can reduce the level of damage. However. attempts lo breed large- and hard-seeded mungbean varieties have been unsuccessful. To understand the relationship between seed weight and hard-seededness. these trails were investigated using a quantitative trail loci (QTL) mapping approach with a recombinant inbred population derived from a cross between a completely soft-seeded variety and a completely hard-seeded genotype. The two parental genotypes also had a sixfold difference in seed weight. QTL analyses revealed four loci for hard-seededness and 11 loci for seed weight. Two of the hard-seeded ness loci co-localized with seed weight QTL. When seed weight was used as a covariate in the analysis of hard-seededness from the field data, two of the four hard-seeded QTL remained significant with the effect al one of these remaining unchanged. These results explain why retaining hard-seededness in large seeded mungbean lines has been unsuccessful. The existence of a persistent locus, however. indicated that breeding large and persistently hard-seeded varieties of mungbean may be possible.

Notes: There are many geological situations where moving ground water transfers a significant amount of heat. Yet, while convective heat transfer is a common phenomenon, it is very difficult to treat analytically. In this paper we present a simple model of convective heat transfer in porous materials and a numerical method of solving the model. The model is then applied to three diverse field situations: (1) a thermal anomaly on the Hartville uplift in eastern Wyoming; (2) a fault-controlled hydrothermal system near Monroe, Utah; and (3) the Luanshya copper mine in the Republic of Zambia. In each case heat transfer by moving ground water is shown to explain the observed thermal anomalies satisfactorily. Our results indicate that in certain situations the effect of ground-water flow needs to be considered in making local and regional assessments of heat-flow data. Furthermore, temperature measurements can be very useful in estimating aquifer recharge, particularly when thermal conductivity and structural information are available.
