Notes: A thin Y-Ba-Cu-O film was formed by the organometallic chemical vapor deposition (OMCVD) method. The substrates used were (100) and (110) SrTiO3. After forming Y-Ba-Cu-O at 800 °C, it was cooled at a rate of 100 °C/min in O2 under 1 atm. This film was c-axis oriented, with its (001) surface grown in parallel to the (100) surface of SrTiO3 and Tc =88 K. The (110) surface of Y-Ba-Cu-O was grown in parallel to the substrate crystal and Tc =84 K on the (110) surface of SrTiO3. After forming, these films were quenched in air from 800 °C to room temperature. The change in resistance of the quenched sample with temperature was metallic, Tonset =75 K, and Tc =60 K.

Notes: The contribution of Gd and/or (Fe,Co) to the saturation magnetostriction constant λs of pseudobinary Gdx(Fe100−yCoy)100−x (9〈x〈65, y=100, 74,38, or 0) films has been examined by substituting nonmagnetic Y for Gd or nonmagnetic Cu for (Fe,Co) and comparing λs of these alloys at 300 and 80 K. The magnetostriction of Gdx(Fe,Co)100−x as well as Yx(Fe,Co)100−x films are positive and the composition (x) dependence of λs in Gd alloys is similar to Y alloys, but λs of Gd alloys are larger than Y alloys. It was further found that GdxCu100−x (35〈x〈60) shows positive λs at 80 K. These facts indicate positive contribution of Gd to λs in amorphous Gd-(Fe,Co) alloys.

Notes: The approximate d bands for Y2Fe14B and Nd2Fe14B are formulated by Deegan's prescription and the formulas of Slater and Koster. The electronic energies of these crystals with the spin directions [001], [100], [101], and [110] are calculated by Gilat and Raubenheimer's method. The experimental result of the anisotropy energy for Y2Fe14B is analyzed with use of these calculated results by introducing the differences of the number of d electrons for these four states. In Nd2Fe14B the same differences of the number of d electrons are introduced and the contribution to the anisotropy energy due to 4f electrons is deduced. This contribution is analyzed by the use of the crystalline field potential (the localized model) and the band model with d-f elements derived by Lendi. The obtained results are considered to be reasonable.

Notes: The d bands for RCo5, R2Co17, and R6Mn23 compounds are formulated by Deegan's prescription and the formulas of Slater and Koster. The d-f elements for these energy bands derived by Lendi are taken into account. The spin polarization of the f bands are investigated. The obtained result explains the experimental result by taking into account the feeble exchange splitting in 4f bands. Additionally, the magnetic moment of rare earths is calculated on the basis of the band model and the calculated result is compared with gJ. It is found that in these compounds the spin polarization is saturated and the moments are much the same as gJ.

Notes: The approximate d bands for YCo5, RCo5, Y2Co17, and R2Co17 (Th2Zn17 and Th2Ni17 type) are formulated by Deegan's prescription and the formulas of Slater and Koster. The experimental results of YCo5 and Y2Co17 are discussed by using these approximate d bands. For RCo5 and R2Co17 the discussions are made by adopting the localized model and the band model for 4f electrons.

Notes: During tangential injection of neutral beams into low-density tokamak plasmas with β〉1%, instabilities are observed that degrade the confinement of beam ions. Neutron, charge-exchange, and diamagnetic loop measurements are examined in order to identify the mechanism or mechanisms responsible for the beam-ion transport. The data suggest a resonant interaction between the instabilities and the parallel energetic beam ions. Evidence for some nonresonant transport also exists.

Notes: Annual changes in the spermatogenetic activity of the testis were studied histologically in the river sculpin. Coitus hangiongensis, sampled monthly from a river in southern Hokkaido, Japan. A pair of sperm reservoirs, consisting of many anastomosing lacunae, was present along the dorsomedian edge of the paired testes, and functioned also as a sperm-transporting system instead of the typical sperm duct. Spermatogenesis occurred actively in August, yielding an increasing number of mature spermatozoa in October. This process advanced, but slowly during the succeeding winter months, until March. The testis became functionally mature during the spawning period in April and May. In July, small numbers of spermatocytes were found to have appeared already, which indicated a relatively short period of post-spawning testicular regression. In November, germinal cysts containing aberrant binuclear spermatids began to appear within the seminal lobules. The paired nuclei of aberrant spermatids gradually enlarged, and the cells were released into the lumina of the seminal lobules simultaneously with the release of mature spermatozoa from the germinal cysts. During the functional maturity stage, lumina of seminal lobules which had expelled mature spermatozoa to sperm reservoirs became filled with these abnormal bodies. Discussion includes the occurrence of aberrant spermatids which resulted in the formation of ‘spermatid masses’ as has been described in other cottids.

Notes: Abstract Theε—θ function (energy level function) which represents surface heterogeneity was derived from theq—θ function (experimental heat function) in the case of reversible adsorption. The Langmuir equation was extended and applied to the procedure of calculations. An iterative calculation led to the most probableε—θ function by setting theq—θ function and adsorption temperature. As an example for actual cases, theε—θ function of Na-Y zeolite was calculated from theq—θ function obtained by the measurement of heats of adsorption of ammonia at 373 K. Theε—θ function thus derived seemed to be consistent with the positional distribution of sodium ions.

Notes: Abstract The surface of silica was treated with trimethylchlorosilane (TMCS) and hexa-methyldisilazane (HMDS) respectively and the immersional heat into water, adsorption capacity for water vapor and infrared absorption spectra were measured. TMCS reacts with freely vibrating silanols while HMDS also reacts with other silanols. By treatment with silane, the silica surface is covered by the trimethylsilyl group, a maximum amount of which attains 1 meq/g (3 groups/nm2). As the amount of the trimethylsilyl group on silica increases, the immersional heat of silica into water decreases and attains a constant value of about 25 erg/cm2, which is the typcial value for a hydrophobic surface. The interaction of the trimethylsilyl group with water is weak, therefore the adsorptive capacity for water vapor is lessened remarkably by treatment with silane.

Notes: Abstract An attempt was made to calculate theq—θ function (experimental heat function) from theε—θ function (energy level function) of a heterogeneous surface. In order to obtain the heat of adsorption, adsorption was assumed to take place on each energy level of theε—θ function. In reversible adsorption, Langmuir's monolayer model was extended to determine the occupation of energy levels by molecules. On this basis, the heat of adsorption could be calculated. Irreversible adsorption was also examined on the basis of chemical kinetics. Molecules were supposed to be held on sites to which they first collided. These calculations were useful for estimating the extent of deviation of theq—θ function from theε—θ function.
