Notes: Summary In the clawed toad,Xenopus laevis, the static vestibulo-ocular reflex appears in 3 days old tadpoles (developmental stage 42) (Fig. 2). The amplitude and gain of this reflex increase up to stage 52, and then decrease to an almost constant value at stage 60 and older tadpoles (Fig. 3). The most effective roll angle gradually increases during development (Fig. 4). The size of the sensory epithelia reaches the final value at the end of the premetamorphic period (stage 56) (Fig. 5). The small-cellular medial ventral vestibular nucleus (VVN) reaches its maximal number of neurons before the large-cellular lateral VVN. Cell death is more pronounced in the medial than in the lateral part of the VVN. In the dorsal vestibular nucleus (DVN), the numerical development of the small and large neurons is similar to that in the small-cellular medial and large-cellular lateral portion of the VVN (Fig. 7). The results demonstrate that labyrinth and oculomotor centres are anatomically connected before the labyrinth and the vestibular nuclei are fully developed. We discuss the possibility that the ciliary polarity pattern of the sensory epithelium is radial during the first period of life, and changes to the vertebrate fan-type pattern during the second week of life. According to the increase of gain during the first three weeks of life, an increase of the spontaneous activity of vestibular neurons may occur during this period.

Notes: Summary Acute hemilabyrinthectomized tadpoles of the Southern Clawed Toad (Xenopus laevis), younger than stage 47 (about 6 days old), perform no static vestibulo-ocular reflex (Fig. 1). Older acute lesioned animals respond with compensatory movements of both eyes during static roll. Their threshold roll angle, however, depends on the developmental stage. For lesioned stages 60 to 64, it is 75° while stage 52 to 56 tadpoles respond even during a lateral roll of 15° (Figs. 1 and 2). Selective destruction of single macula and crista organs revealed that the static vestibulo-ocular reflex is evoked by excitation of the macula utriculi (Figs. 3 and 4) even in young tadpoles. The results demonstrate that bilateral projections of the vestibular apparatus must have developed at the time of occurrence of the static VOR, that during the first week of life the excitation of a single labyrinth is subthreshold (Fig. 1). We discuss the possibility whether the loss of the static VOR during the prometamorphic period of life (Fig. 2) is caused by increasing formation of multimodal connections in the vestibular pathway.

Notes: The amount of adenosine triphosphate (ATP) in human lymphocytes was determined using a technique based on light emission from a bioluminescent reaction with luciferin-luciferase. The amount of ATP changed when cells were incubated in the presence of specific HLA antisera and complement. For determination of intracellular ATP a modified method was applied, which was based on reduction of extracellular ATP by the addition of ATPase. The results of titration of an anti-human lymphocyte serum using the bioluminescence assay were in agreement with the results of fluorescence vitality staining. Bioluminescent HLA-determination in 57 cell samples each tested with 5 different antisera also gave good agreement (95.8%) with the conventional method. From these experimental data the calculated ATP content per lymphocyte was 0.135 ± 0.058 pg ATP.

Description / Table of Contents: The molar ratio H2O : NaOH of sodium hydroxide solution sorbed by cellulose is represented as the equilibrium curve against the respective molar ratio of the free sodium hydroxide solution. With the results of further studies on the hydration of NaOH in sodium hydroxide solution, the hydrates of sodium hydroxide were related to the NaOH solvates bound by cellulose and the reactions accompanying the alkalization of cellulose are explained.

Notes: DNA sequences of the envelop (env) gene of the bovine leukemia virus (BLV) were expressed in the yeast saccharomyces cerevisiae. Two yeast promoters, the responsible PH05 promoter and the constitutive PGK promoter, were used to construct four expression plasmids either a sequence of the surface antigen gp51 or a (gp51 + gp30) sequence. The expressed hetrologous gene products were characterized by Western blot analysis and competitive radio-immunoassay. By means of Northern blot analysis the steady-state level of env-specific mRNA was analysed. The highest expression rate was obtained from recombinant plasmid YEpSG 94 comprising a gp51 sequence - a 630 base pair fragment containing 70% of the gp51 but lacking the N terminus - as well as the PH05 promoter including PH05 signal sequence and the PH05 terminator. The recombinant gp51 was partially lycosylated but the PH05 signal peptide did not seem to be cleaved off. No immunoreactive material could be found in the periplasm or in the culture medium.By means of monoclonal antibodies directed against eight different epitopes of viral gp51, all for sequential antigenic determinants were detected in the AH 216(YEpSG 94) expression product.

Description: Marie Stopes (18801958) is best known for her controversial writings on sex, marriage and birth control, but during her 20s and 30s she carved out a successful career as a palaeobotanist. Here, we discuss her work on the Fern Ledges of Saint John, New Brunswick. The age of these fossil beds had long been shrouded in controversy. The eminent 19th-century geologist, Sir William Dawson, had argued that they were Devonian and represented remains of the oldest known terrestrial ecosystem. In 1910, Stopes was commissioned by the Geological Survey of Canada to reassess the taxonomy and age of this fossil flora. We provide the first detailed chronology of this 18-month long research project and highlight some of the most important aspects of the study. Her outstanding monograph, characterized by precise observation and interpretation, cut through decades of muddled thinking to prove that the beds were, in fact, Pennsylvanian. In addition, her palaeoecological inferences were well ahead of their time and also had biostratigraphical implications. Although she continued to intermittently publish geological works until the mid-1930s, the Fern Ledges project, which coincided with her disastrous first marriage to Reginald Gates, marked the beginning of the end of her palaeobotanical career and the start of her more extraordinary and enduring contribution to society.
