    Notes: Preliminary results on the investigation of solvent-vapor-induced crystallization of polycarbonate/PC/ are presented. The influence of solvent solubility parameters δs on the sphrulite radius R and crystallinity degree α is taken into account. It has been found that both R and α depend on δs for PC samples of different molecular characteristics.

    Notes: Our study was conducted to determine the forms of the oxygen chemisorbed during the interaction of CO and H2 with FeNiB and FeB alloys in both amorphous and crystallized states using photoelectron spectroscopy. Four different kinds of oxygen were observed to exist on the samples based upon O Is binding energies (B.E.), that is, 530.1 ± 0.2 eV, 531.0 ± 0.2eV, 531.5 ± 0.2 eV and 532.0 ± 0.2 eV. The first peak is probably related to bulk iron oxide while the last one correlates directly with the occurrence of boron oxide species. The second peak is believed to be the signal of a weakly chemisorbed surface oxygen species in atomic state covering the surfaces after room temperature and low pressure (10-4Pa) oxygen adsorption. It can be the possible precursor for deep oxidation of metal. The third peak may be assigned to the oxygen species stuck to the boron-metal interfaces having migrated from the metal surface to the surrounding boron atoms. Thereby small metal ensembles can be stabilized. In an ealier work it was established that the highest catalytic activity in the CO + H2 reaction can be related to the partially crystallized FeNiB alloys. It was supposed to be due to a special surface structure hindering the formation of the inactive graphitic species. In the light of the present study his structure can be stabilized by this boron oxide.

    Description / Table of Contents: Lösliche Polyurethane, die Bisphenolfragmente in der Kette enthalten, wurden ausgehend von Diolen vom Cardo-Typ synthetisiert. Die Eigenschaften der erhaltenen Polymere wurden untersucht, um die kinetischen Besonderheiten der Bilding dieser Polyurethane festzustellen. Die Einflüsse von Temperatur, Reaktionszeit, Anfangskonzentration der Komponenten im Reaktionsmedium sowie der Struktur der Diole und Diisocyanate wurden untersucht. Die Geschwindigkeitskonstanten der Reaktion und die Aktivierungsenergie des Prozesses wurden ermittelt.
    Notes: Soluble polyurethanes containing bisphenol fragments in the chain were synthesized on base of card-type diols. The characteristics of the resulting polymers were studied to find the kinetic regularities in the formation of these polyurethanes. The effects of temperature, duration of the reaction, initial concentration of the components in the reaction medium, and of the structure of the diols and diisocyanates were investigated. The rate constants of the reaction and the activation energy of the process were determined.

    Description / Table of Contents: Eine Reihe neuer Bis(naphthalincarbonsäureanhydride) wurden durch Umsatz von Acenaphthen mit Dichloranhydriden von Dicarbonsäuren unter den Bedingungen einer Friedel-Crafts-Reaktion mit Chloral bzw. Bromal und nachfolgender Oxidation der Bis(acenaphthyle) und Anhydridisierung der Tetracarbonsäuren synthetisiert. Aus diesen Anhydriden und Bis(o-phenylendiaminen) erhaltene Poly(naphthoylen-benzoimidazole) vereinen gute thermische Eigenschaften mit Löslichkeit in organischen Lösungsmitteln.
    Notes: A series of novel bis(naphthalic anhydrides) has been prepared through acenapthene interaction with the dichloroanhydrides of dicarboxylic acids under the conditions of the Friedel-Crafts reaction or with chloral and bromal followed by oxidation of bis-acenaphthyls and anhydrization of the tetracarboxylic acids synthesized. Poly(naphthoylene benzoimidazoles) combining advantageous thermal properties and solubility in organic solvents have been obtained through interaction between the synthesized anhydrides and bis(o-phenylene diamines).

    Notes: The translational energy, T, released during the loss of the angular 18- and 19-methyl groups both from metastable molecular ions and metastable [M — H2O]+ and [M — 2H2O]+ ions, in C(5)-unsaturated mono-and di-hydroxy steroids, as well as in their 19-nor and deuterated analogues bearing the label in the 19-methyl group, has been measured. It was found that, while the T values for the 19-CH3 loss, following the dehydration of the molecular ions, are increased substantially when compared to those for the same loss from the molecular ions, the T values for the 18-CH3 loss are increased much more moderately. Nevertheless, the amounts of translational energy released in the [M — H2O]+· — 18-CH3· and [M — 2 H2O]+· — 18-CH3· transitions are still higher than those found for the respective 19-methyl loss, in accordance with the general rule established recently.

    Notes: Extensive networks of metastable ions link the major peaks in the electron impact mass spectra of two crown ethers containing 2,6-pyrido units. High-resolution mass measurements and the metastable peaks allow the elucidation of the fragmentation pathways. The spectra are influenced more by the presence of aromatic substituents than by the 2,6-pyrido units.

    Description: Sound communication plays a vital role in frog reproduction, in which vocal advertisement is generally the domain of males. Females are typically silent, but in a few anuran species they can produce a feeble reciprocal call or rapping sounds during courtship. Males of concave-eared torrent frogs (Odorrana tormota) have demonstrated ultrasonic communication capacity. Although females of O. tormota have an unusually well-developed vocal production system, it is unclear whether or not they produce calls or are only passive partners in a communication system dominated by males. Here we show that before ovulation, gravid females of O. tormota emit calls that are distinct from males' advertisement calls, having higher fundamental frequencies and harmonics and shorter call duration. In the field and in a quiet, darkened indoor arena, these female calls evoke vocalizations and extraordinarily precise positive phonotaxis (a localization error of 〈1 degrees ), rivalling that of vertebrates with the highest localization acuity (barn owls, dolphins, elephants and humans).     Description: Clinical trials of small interfering RNA (siRNA) targeting vascular endothelial growth factor-A (VEGFA) or its receptor VEGFR1 (also called FLT1), in patients with blinding choroidal neovascularization (CNV) from age-related macular degeneration, are premised on gene silencing by means of intracellular RNA interference (RNAi). We show instead that CNV inhibition is a siRNA-class effect: 21-nucleotide or longer siRNAs targeting non-mammalian genes, non-expressed genes, non-genomic sequences, pro- and anti-angiogenic genes, and RNAi-incompetent siRNAs all suppressed CNV in mice comparably to siRNAs targeting Vegfa or Vegfr1 without off-target RNAi or interferon-alpha/beta activation. Non-targeted (against non-mammalian genes) and targeted (against Vegfa or Vegfr1) siRNA suppressed CNV via cell-surface toll-like receptor 3 (TLR3), its adaptor TRIF, and induction of interferon-gamma and interleukin-12. Non-targeted siRNA suppressed dermal neovascularization in mice as effectively as Vegfa siRNA. siRNA-induced inhibition of neovascularization required a minimum length of 21 nucleotides, a bridging necessity in a modelled 2:1 TLR3-RNA complex. Choroidal endothelial cells from people expressing the TLR3 coding variant 412FF were refractory to extracellular siRNA-induced cytotoxicity, facilitating individualized pharmacogenetic therapy.
