Notes: Intergeneric hybridization between wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) and a wild weedy species, Imperata cylindrica (2n = 20) resulted in the recovery of a high frequency of wheat haploids, which were obtained through the elimination of I. cylindrica chromosomes. Cytological analysis of the root tips revealed the somatic chromosome count of the regenerants equalled 21. Haploid regenerants were also obtained in all the crosses of wheat F1s with I. cylindrica, implying the genotype nonspecific nature of wheat x I. cylindrica hybridization. Variation among wheat F1 hybrids was observed with respect to seed formation (44.9-84.5%), embryo formation (15.1-47.7%) and regeneration (27.0-75.0%) in crosses with I. cylindrica. Comparisons based on the efficiency of I. cylindrica and maize (Zea mays) as pollen sources indicated that Imperata-mediated haploid production is equally efficient. There is natural coincidence of flowering period of I. cylindrica with that of wheat under sub-temperate conditions which is advantageous compared with maize, which cannot be grown during the winter season in the sub-temperate regions.

Notes: Forty-three genotypes of lavender, Lavandula officinalis Chaix, comprising 20 parental stocks including variety ‘Karlovo’, and 23 promising clones were subjected to genetic divergence analysis by Mahalanobis D2 statistics. All the clones were grouped in 12 clusters. Intracluster D2 was highest for cluster × followed by cluster IX and I. Highest intercluster D2 value was observed between cluster VII and IX. Major emphasis was given to including Sher-i-Kashmir, B 10, E 2, A3 and one from each cluster I, II, V, VII, VIII and × for polycross for maximum chance of transgressive segregants of practical utility.

Notes: The inheritance of isoproturon tolerance exhibited by the selected progenies of durum wheat was investigated. This tolerance to the herbicide isoproturon had been transferred from Triticum monococcum to durum wheat cultivars. It was shown to be conditioned by a single dominant gene

Notes: The Rhizobium meliloti nod region lib is involved in host-range determination: (i)the presence of region lib is necessary for transfer of alfalfa root hair curling ability to Rhizobium legumlnosarum biovar trifolii; (ii) a mutation in region llb extends the R. meliloti infection host range to Vicia sativa nigra; (iii) dominance of R. meliloti nod genes over R. leguminosarum biovar viciae nod genes is abolished by mutations in region llb. The nucleotide sequence of this region has been determined. Genes corresponding to the two open reading frames identified are designated nodP and nodQ. The predicted amino acid sequence of the NodQ protein shows homology with translation initiation and elongation factors. The consensus sequence involved in the GTP-binding domain is conserved.

Notes: Sequence analysis of two independently isolated Eβk cDNA clones revealed that the Eβk molecule is identical to the Eβb molecule at the NH2-terminus. These data resolve a discrepancy between previously published amino acid and nucleotide sequences and indicate that the Eβ NH2-terminus is not as polymorphic as was once believed.

Notes: Uptake of d-glucose, l-lysine and l-proline and the kinetic parameters of alkaline phosphatase and γ-glutamyl-transpeptidase were evaluated in renal brush border membrane (BBM) vesicles prepared from control, pyelonephritic and iron-administered pyelonephritic rats. The uptake of d-glucose and amino acids and Vmax of both the enzymes studied were found to be altered in pyelonephritic and iron-administered pyelonephritic rats, but changes appeared earlier and more severely in iron-administered infected animals than in other infected animals. These early physiological alterations were accompanied by higher bacterial colonisation in iron-administered rats.

Notes: Abstract The uptake of d-glucose, l-aspartate, l-lysine and l-proline was investigated in renal brush border membrane (BBM) vesicles prepared from control, infected or passively-immunized-infected rats. Except l-aspartate, a progressive decrease in the uptake of these nutrients in both infected and immunized-infected groups during the course of infection was observed, but the changes were less apparent in immunized-infected rats than in non-immunized ones. The uptake of l-aspartate was increased in vesicles from early stages of infection but decreased in those from later stages. Also in l-aspartate uptake, the changes were smaller in immunized animals. The uptake of nutrients was detectable earlier than were histophatological alterations of both kidneys. The observations demonstrated that uptake to d-glucose and amino acids in the kidneys is disturbed prior to appearance of histopathological lesions and thus can be used for early detection of the disease. The data also demonstrate that antipili antibodies afford partial protection against ascending pyelonephritis.

Notes: Activities of renal brush border membrane (BBM) enzymes, alkaline phosphatase, maltase and leucine aminopeptidase, were determined in control, pyelonephritic and immunized-infected rats. The activities of all enzymes decreased significantly (P 〈 0.05) in obstructed kidney while activities of alkaline phosphatase and leucine aminopeptidase increased significantly (P 〈 0.05) in unobstructed kidney in early stages of infection. The affinity constant (Km) of all enzymes remained unaltered in control and experimental groups. Significant differences (P 〈 0.05) in the activities of BBM enzymes of infected and immunized-infected animals suggested a protective role of active immunization with pili.

Notes: The influence of fillers like clay, silica, and carbon black on the rheological properties of 1,2 polybutadiene has been studied using a capillary rheometer. Silica filled compound exhibited the highest viscosity and clay filled compound the lowest viscosity at all shear rates. The effect of filler loading and temperature on the Theological behavior has also been studied. Smooth extrudates were obtained in most of the cases and die swell was lower for silica and carbon black filled compounds than for clay filled compounds. Rheograms of different 1,2 polybutadiene systems have been found to merge into a master curve using modified viscosity and shear rate functions that contain melt flow index as a parameter.

Notes: The effect of stretching condition on stress-induced crystallization of amorphous polyethylene terephthalate (PET) film has been studied. Cast PET film was stretched at 85°C with stretching rates ranging from 100% per minute to 600% per minute for various stretching ratios. The stretched film samples were annealed at 140°C both under tension as well as under relaxed conditions. Tensile properties were determined using Instron Tensile Tester and results were compared. Tenacity, yield stress, and initial modulus were found to increase while elongation at break decreased with the increase in stretching rate. The degree of crystallinity was measured by x-ray diffraction as well as density methods. Birefringence and crystalline orientation factor values were determined experimentally and using these, amorphous orientation factor values were calculated. Birefringence, crystalline orientation and amorphous orientation values were found to increase with the increase in stretching rate. These studies showed that at low stretching rates a significant amount of relaxation takes place, resulting in lower orientation and strength. On the other hand, at higher stretching rates relaxation is minimized thus providing high orientation and strength. Upon annealing the crystallinity values increased as expected, however the trend of orientation and mechanical properties with respect to stretching rate was similar to those of unannealed films.
