Notes: Abstract The 2B/X2.8 double-ribbon flare of 30 March, 1982 is investigated using Hα, white light, X-rays, and microwaves. The X-ray burst seems to consist of two components, i.e., an impulsive component showing a long chain of peaks and a thermal component (T ∼ 2 × 107 K). In the early phase, the source images for the impulsive component were available simultaneously at soft (7–14 keV) and hard (20–40 keV) X-rays. Both sources are elongated along a neutral line. The core of the source for the hard X-rays is located at one end which seems to be a footpoint (or a leg) of a loop or arcade, while the core for the soft X-rays is located at the center of the elongated source which would be the center of the loop. The core for the hard X-rays shifted to this center in the main and later phase, accompanied by decrease in the source size in the later phase. A peak of one-directional intensity distribution at 35 GHz always lies on the core of the hard X-ray source, showing a shift of the position synchronous with the hard X-ray core. This may imply a common source for the radio waves and the hard X-rays. The source of the thermal component observed at the soft X-rays (7–14 keV) after the early phase covers a whole Hα patches. This may imply a physical relation between the thermal X-ray loops and the Hα brightening.

Notes: Abstract We report computer simulations and high-temperature approximations of the pair correlation in a stationary nonequilibrium system, a lattice gas subject to a strong uniform driving fieldE. The dynamics of the system is given by hoppings of particles to adjacent empty sites with rates biased for jumps in the direction ofE. We study the anisotropic short-distance behavior as well as the long-distance decay properties of the two-point correlations along the principal axes. The simulations as well as the (approximate) expansion inβ strongly suggest that the correlations in this system have a power law decay,r −D for dimensionsD=2 and 3, even at high temperatures.

Notes: Abstract The May 20, 1986, Hualien earthquake sequence occurred on the northeastern coast of Taiwan. TheM=6.1 (GS mb) mainshock was followed by a large number of closely-clustered aftershocks with the largest being anM=5.5 event. One seismic station, TWD of the Taiwan Telemetered Seismographic Network, is located in the surface projection of the source region and provides excellent recordings of the entire earthquake sequence. These recordings, plus events occurring in the same source area preceding the mainshock, offer a unique opportunity to study the spatial and temporal variations of codaQ in a region of active subduction. A simple technique is devised that uses the envelope of the coda waveform to enable a quick determination of the codaQ from drum records. For recordings with a peak power at about 8 Hz, the following findings have been obtained: 1. The ambient codaQ near an active subduction region was as low as 145; 2. There was no significant decrease in codaQ within the period beginning one year and four months prior to the mainshock; 3. There was a significant drop of codaQ immediately after the mainshock; this drop lasted approximately two days before returning to the ambient level; 4. CodaQ values varied with focal depth.

Notes: Summary The presence of endogenous growth-related polypeptide hormones, such as growth hormone (GH), somatomadin-C/insulin-like growth factor-1 (SM-C/IGF-1), prolactin (PRL) and Mullerian inhibiting substance (MIS) on chick embryonic tissues have been detected by electron microscopic (EM) immunocytochemistry. Antiserum against GH, anti-SM-C/IGF-1, anti-PRL and anti-MIS were used respectively as primary antibodies for immunolabeling probes by peroxidase (PO) and avidin-biotin complex (ABC)-gold ligands. Cross-reaction studies by ELISA showed negative or weak antigen-antibody interactions. Chick embryos, gonads, and Mullerian ducts (Mds) of various ages were fixed in 2.5% glutaraldehyde for 30 min. Washes in phosphate buffer were administered between each of the following incubations: (i) 2% BSA; (ii) primary antibody; (iii) biotinylated or PO-conjugated secondary antibody; (iv) avidin conjugated with gold particles. SM-C/IGF-1 bindings were negative on 1d embryonic disc, heavily stained on 2d endoderm. However, the GH bindings were found on the embryonic layers of 1d and 2d embryos, and increasing on the luminal epithelial cells of Mds during development. PRL was found in parallel with GH, but in less amount. The 10d Mds were double labeled with anti-SM-C/IGF-1-gold and anti-MIS-PO (MIS-PO), and the results showed SM-C/IGF-I negative, but MIS-PO positive bindings. This study provides the first immunocytochemical evidences for: (i) The presence of GH, SM-C/IGF-1, PRL and MIS bindings on chick embryonic tissues, and further supports their potential role as growth mediators during embryonic development. (ii) The amount of GH and MIS bindings were found correspondingly to their physiological status of Md growth or regression. (iii) MIS is secreted by the embryonic gonads.

Notes: Summary We study the estimation of a density and a hazard rate function based on censored data by the kernel smoothing method. Our technique is facilitated by a recent result of Lo and Singh (1986) which establishes a strong uniform approximation of the Kaplan-Meier estimator by an average of independent random variables. (Note that the approximation is carried out on the original probability space, which should be distinguished from the Hungarian embedding approach.) Pointwise strong consistency and a law of iterated logarithm are derived, as well as the mean squared error expression and asymptotic normality, which is obtain using a more traditional method, as compared with the Hajek projection employed by Tanner and Wong (1983).

Notes: Abstract A series of Al2O3-ZrO2 ceramics has been fabricated using both conventional sintering and a hot-pressing route, which results in various microstructures including (i) Al2O3 with well-dispersed ZrO2 single crystals; (ii) Al2O3 With TZP (tetragonal zirconia polycrystals) agglomerates (20 to 50μm); and (iii) Al2O3-ZrO2 duplex structures, in which both well-dispersed ZrO2 single crystals and TZP agglomerates are dispersed. The fracture strength of the composites has been measured by means of three-point bending and the fracture toughness by means of the micro-indentation technique. The microstructural characterization was carried out using scanning and transmission electron microscopy, and phase analysis of the zirconia by means of X-ray diffraction. The high toughness values of ≈ 12 M Pa m1/2 measured for the duplex structure have been correlated with the toughening mechanisms operative and the fracture strength with the matrix grain size and with larger defects present in the structure. A combined toughening process is proposed to account for the improved properties, including transformation toughening, microcrack toughening and crack deflection, which are discussed in context with the property measurements and the microstructural observations.

Notes: Abstract The detrimental effect of water on the Y1Ba2Cu3O7-δ superconducting ceramics has been studied using X-ray diffraction, infrared spectroscopy and transmission electron microscopy. It has been shown that barium carbonate is the major reaction product after reaction. From the viewpoint of the process, the reaction is shown to occur in three stages, e.g. (I) microcrack formation along the layers perpendicular to the c-axis; (II) lattice dissolution which is a consequence of the increasing microcrack density and their subsequent propagation; (III) the formation of the corrosion product.

Notes: Summary In this paper an analytic solution of the problem of finite plastic bending of a beam is presented. The constitutive relation used is an endochronic constitutive equation pertaining to finite plastic deformation. The material behavior is assumed to be incompressible, isotropic and rate independent.

Notes: Abstract A laser scanning microdisplacement detection system has been developed to measure the thermal expansion coefficient of materials over the range from room temperature to 1200 K. The measurement apparatus consists of a dynamic heating device, a microdisplacement detection system, and a microcomputerbased high-speed data acquisition system. The specimen is dynamically heated from room temperature to 1200 K by passing a large electrical current through it. The thermal expansion of the specimen is detected by the laser detection system, which records the shift of Fraunhofer diffraction fringes with a photodetector. Measurements of the mean linear thermal expansion coefficient of 1Cr18Ni9Ti stainless steel in the range of 300–1200 K are described. The results are compared with other reported values of the thermal expansion coefficient. The maximum deviation between them is about 2.3% at the highest temperature, 1200 K.

Notes: Abstract A pre-anneal treatment was introduced to a melt-spun Ni-P alloy. By crystallizing the asquenched and pre-annealed samples in a differential scanning calorimeter at different heating rates and isothermal process, the apparent activation energies for the total crystallization of the Ni-P samples were obtained by using the Kissinger technique and the Arrhenius relation. It was found that the apparent activation energy, E c, decreased and tended to a certain value of 180 kJ mol−1, with increase of pre-anneal time. According to the classical phase transformation theory, the activation energies for nucleation and growth of nuclei in the Ni-P glasses were deduced to be 324 and 180 kJ mol−1, respectively, which are very close to the values previously reported by our laboratory. The weight parameters of nucleation, a, and growth, b, decrease monotonically and increase and tend to certain values with an increase of pre-anneal time, respectively.
