    Geomagnetic changes correlated with crustal movement in the north-eastern part of the Izu Peninsula, Japan (2006)

    Beschreibung: After the 1989 sea-floor eruption off the east coast of Ito city, no remarkable activities of earthquake swarms were observed in the eastern part of the Izu Peninsula, Central Japan during the period from 1990 to 1992. However, a small swarm activity was again observed in January, 1993 and a remarkable one took place again in May-June 1993. Several months after the subsidence of the swarm activity, abrupt changes in the crustal movement in the inland of the peninsula were observed during the period from September 1993 to February 1994. At some continuous observation sites, well correlated changes in the geomagnetic total intensity were observed almost during the same period when the anomalous changes in the crustal movement were seen in the eastern part of the peninsula. The spatial patterns of negative changes of the total intensity in the northern half and positive ones in the south were seen in the north-eastern edge of the domed distribution of the upheaval. The changes in crustal movement and the geomagnetic field terminated when a small swarm activity occurred at the end of February 1994.

    Drag-out effect of piezomagnetic signals due to a borehole: the Mogi source as an example (2007)

    Beschreibung: We show that using borehole measurements in tectonomagnetic experiments allows enhancement of the observed signals. New magnetic dipoles, which vary with stress changes from mechanical sources, are produced on the walls of the borehole. We evaluate such an effect quantitatively. First we formulate a general expression for the borehole effect due to any arbitrary source models. This is valid everywhere above the ground surface as well as within the cylindrical hole. A first-order approximate solution is given by a line of horizontal dipoles and vertical quadrupoles along the central axis of the borehole, which is valid above the ground surface and a slightly away (several tens of cm) from the top of the borehole. Selecting the Mogi model as an example, we numerically evaluated the borehole effect. It turned out that the vertical quadrupoles produce two orders of magnitude more intense magnetic field than the horizontal dipoles. The borehole effect is very local, i.e. detectable only within a few m from its outlet, since it is of the same order or more than the case without a borehole. However, magnetic lines of force cannot reach the ground surface from a deeper portion (〉10 m) of a borehole.

    Notizen: Heteroepitaxial growth of CdTe on an InSb (111)B substrate has been investigated using the metalorganic chemical vapor deposition method under a total vapor pressure of about 1 Pa. By cracking diethyltellurium thermally at 670 °C, CdTe films were deposited in a wide substrate temperature range from 120 to 450 °C. Single-crystal films grown at 250 °C showed a good surface morphology.

    Notizen: Electrical properties of a metal/CdTe/InSb metal-insulator-semiconductor structure have been investigated by capacitance-voltage and conductance-voltage measurements for the first time at 77 K. Interfaces of both p- and n-type InSb substrates can be controlled from accumulation states to inversion states. Distribution of interface state density evaluated by the Terman method is U shaped with the minimum value of 1012 cm−2 eV−1.

    Notizen: A new low-temperature cleaning as well as a growth method using a hydrogen (H) plasma was successfully applied to the growth of GaAs on Si. The H plasma is expected to play several roles, such as cleaning the Si surface just prior to growth, decomposition of the metalorganic sources introduced without thermal cracking for the GaAs growth, supplying H radicals to terminate the organic-alkyl radicals, and enhancement of the mobilities for the surface migration. The almost atomically flat Si clean surface was prepared at a temperature as low as 300 °C using the H plasma. A single-domain GaAs epilayer was successfully realized at 400 °C after growth of 100 nm on a two-domain (001) Si surface using triethylgallium and triethylarsenic introduced without thermal cracking. The films were grown just after surface cleaning with the H plasma in the same chamber. Therefore, the reduction of the temperature for the whole growth process is possible with this new method.

    Notizen: A high-resolution Compton spectrometer has been installed for 29.5-keV incident x rays from a vertical wiggler inserted in the 2.5-GeV storage ring of the Photon Factory at Tsukuba. This spectrometer consists of bent-crystal monochromator, a Cauchois-type bent-crystal analyzer, and an imaging plate as a position sensitive detector. The overall momentum resolution is 0.084 a.u. for the incident x-ray energy of 29.5 keV. High-resolution Compton profile measurements on Al, a quasicrystal Al-Li-Cu, and solid and liquid phase of Li are shown to demonstrate the performance of this spectrometer.

    Notizen: The atmospheric environmental exposure system for synchrotron radiation (SR) lithography has been integrated using the Photon Factory storage ring (2.5 GeV). The system, composed of a highly reliable beamline, an SR extracting chamber and a prototype SR stepper, aims at attaining higher accuracy and throughput. Based on a fail-safe mechanism notion, a double-vacuum protection system, in which two sets of a fast closing valve and acoustic delay line are installed in the main beamline and branch beamline, respectively, has been organized. Vacuum breakdown tests indicated that any vacuum breakdown, a beryllium (Be) window rupture in the worst case, exerts little influence on the storage ring ultrahigh vacuum. The SR extracting chamber, equipped with a Be window and an extraction window, is filled with helium at atmospheric pressure. Particularly, the 50-μm-thick, 35-mm-diam Be window, vacuum-sealed by a Viton O-ring, was preliminarily employed and, so far, has operated successfully, giving a 25-mm square exposure area. In terms of practical availability and simplicity, the SR stepper in an atmospheric environment has been constructed. A novel differential mode linear Fresnel zone plate alignment method, which can detect an alignment error between a mask and a wafer during exposure, was developed.

    Notizen: A 70-day feeding experiment was conducted to assess the dietary vitamin A (VA) requirements of juvenile Japanese flounder (Paralichthys olivaceus). Six semi-purified diets with VA supplementations of 0, 5000, 10 000, 15 000, 20 000 and 25 000 IU kg−1 were fed twice a day to triplicate groups of 20 juveniles per tank with an initial weight of 1.59 ± 0.01 g (mean ± SE). Weight gain (WG) and specific growth rate (SGR) increased as dietary VA increased up to 10 000 IU kg−1. Significantly lower WG and SGR were observed for the 0 IU kg−1 treatment than for treatments of 5000, 10 000 and 15 000 IU kg−1. Highest WG and SGR were observed in fish fed 10 000 IU kg−1; slightly lower values were recorded in fish fed 15 000, 20 000 or 25 000 IU kg1. No significant difference was observed in survival rate among treatments. Whole body total lipid was significantly higher in fish fed 0 and 5000 IU kg−1 than for other levels. Reduced growth and small livers were observed as signs of VA deficiency in fish fed 0 IU kg−1. Slightly reduced growth and pale fragile livers were observed as effects of VA excess in fish fed 25 000 IU kg−1. Total retinol contents in liver and eyes increased with increasing levels of dietary VA. No retinol was detected in livers, and significantly lower total retinol content was observed in eyes, of fish fed 0 IU kg−1. WG analysed by the broken line method indicated that an optimum dietary VA requirement of 9000 IU kg−1.
