Notes: Novel segmented multiblock copolymers (7) were synthesized by linking poly(ethylene oxide) (PEO) blocks with poly(β-benzyl L-aspartate)(PBLA) blocks via urethane and urea bonds, which were formed by the reaction of 4,4′-methylenediphenyl isocyanate (5) with the terminal hydroxyl groups of α-hydro-ω-hydroxypoly(oxyethylene) (4) and the terminal amino groups of poly(β-benzyl L-aspartate)-block-iminohexamethyleneimino-block-poly(β-benzyl L-aspartate) (3) [prepared from 1,6-hexanediamine (1) and β-benzyl L-aspartate N-carboxy anhydride (2)], respectively. Membranes with various water contents were obtained from these copolymers by changing the lengths of the PEO and PBLA segments. The study of the permeation of 1-phenyl-1,2-ethanediol, vitamin B12 and myoglobin through the membranes showed a high dependency of the permeability on the molecular weight of the solutes.

Notes: Ultra-thin films of and precursor polymers for polybenzimidazole (PBI), polybenzoxazole (PBO), or polybenzothiazole (PBT) were formed at air/water interface by spreading monomers and then polymerizing on the water surface. These thin films could be deposited onto appropriate substrates by using the LB method of horizontal lifting. Moreover, the heat-treatment of the built-up films of the precursor polymers of PBI, PBO, and PBT formed the ultra-thin films of high temperature polymers. The resulting ultra-thin films had uniform and controllable thickness, but remained fairly stable when subjected to temperature up to 300°C. They also had good solvent resistance.

Notes: Copolymers of bis[4-(N,N-dimethylamino)phenyl]-4-vinylphenylmethanenitrile (vinyl Malachite Green leuconitrile) with methyl methacrylate or ω-methoxyoligo(oxyethylene) methacrylate have been synthesized, aiming at designing one-component-type organic polymers for photoswitchable ion-conducting films. The triphenylmethanenitrile copolymers with ω-methoxyoligo(oxyethylene) methacrylate were found to undergo ionic-conductivity switching by turning on and off UV light at ambient temperature, owing to their low glass transition temperature. © 1993 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.

Notes: Copper sulfide-polymer composite was prepared by depositing copper into porous polyolefine film with a method of electroless plating and sulfurizing the copper. The composite was an n-type semiconductor and useful as a component of p-n junction device and as a gas detector. The method was also useful for the preparation of silver sulfide-, nickel sulfide-, and cobalt sulfide-polymer composites.

Notes: Aluminum hydroxide was used as a reactive filler to elastomers prepared from poly(oxypropylene)glycol (PPG), 2,4-tolylene diisocyanate (TDI), and 1,4-butane diol (BD). Mechanical properties, dynamic mechanical properties, and thermal properties were measured. Morphologies were observed by use of X-ray diffraction and scanning electron micrographs. The model reaction of isocyanate and aluminum was also studied. It was found that aluminum hydroxide fillers can be used for cost reduction without any detrimental effects on mechanical properties. Scanning electron micrograph studies of freshly cut surfaces of the aluminum filled elastomers showed that aluminum hydroxide is highly compatible with the elastomer. © 1994 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.

Notes: Various azobenzene derivatives and polymers were attempted as materials for thin composite films containing a polymer, a liquid crystal, and lithium perchlorate which can undergo ionic-conductivity switching induced by light or heat. Poly(vinyl chloride) -based composite films containing enantiotropic azobenzene liquid crystals 1, exhibited significant ionicconductivity change based on thermo- and photoinduced phase transitions of 1, the temperature dependence on the ionic conductivity reflecting the enantiotropic phase transition behavior of the liquid crystals. Marked, reversible ionic-conductivity switching on alternating irradiation of UV and visible lights was attained with the composite films containing 1, especially 1 (n = 12). Incorporation of monotropic liquid crystals 3 to the composite films allowed bistability in the temperature dependence on the ionic conductivity. Employment of a polycarbonate resin and poly(methyl methacrylate) as the polymer material of the composite films gave similar ionic-conductivity changes to the poly(vinyl chloride) composite films, whereas polyethyleneoxide brought about some different results in the photoinduced ionic-conductivity change.

Notes: Poly(styrene) (PST) coatings of monodispersed colloidal metal oxide particles by surface grafting to poly(N-vinyl-2-pyrrolidone) (ST-PVP) or quaternized poly(4-vinylpyridine) (ST-PVPy(Me)) macromer, having a vinylphenylene end group, were investigated. Radical polymerization of styrene (ST) in ethanolic silica colloid in the presence of ST-PVP successfully led to the formation of monodispersed PST/PVP copolymer/SiO2composites. The addition of divinylbenzene (DVB) to the reaction system gave SiO2 composites coated with crosslinked PST. Graft-polymerization of ST to ST-PVP also took place on TiO2, CeO2 and Al(OH)3 colloidal particles in ethanolic solution. However, ST-PVPy(Me) adsorbed on colloidal silica did not effectively graft PST.
